View Full Version : Are they going for photo-realistic graphics?

I completely understand the choice for going with a 3D engine, and I trust that potentially they can make it play exactly and strictly like a 2D game. However from the screenshots I've seen so far, it seems that they game is looking less like a 2D game and very photo-realistic, kinda like how a SF EX4 would look if it were made today. I was really hoping that they would go for very cel-shaded graphics like the trailer, to the point where people would really doubt it was a 3D game.
This isn't a rant thread, but I'm not sure I understand what we've seen so far, it completely contradicts the teaser we've seen (that was supposed to hint us towards the graphical direction of the game).

Did anyone actually say that was a hint as to what the graphics would be, or is that just what people want?
I agree that cell shaded would be good looking and unique for a fighting game, but I have no problem with the new graphics engine either. Let's wait for more screen shots before passing judgment.

It doesn't look photo-realistic at all. It looks just as steeped in SF's concept design style as the 2D games.

Give it two more weeks. We'll have a new better sourced thread to argue about...

I was thinking this myself but decided to not say anything until given more information. Personally, I can't wrap my brain around a photo realistic Street Fighter.

neither can my friends and i. street fighter is all about the HAND DRAWN art. look what happened in EX. i don't think the chars look that great so far.
if i compare SF2HD and SF4's art, sf2HD's art looks WAY more true to the street fighter core. imo, sf is suppose to be about the anime style art. leave the 'realism' to VF, DOA, tekken, etc.
sigh...its too bad.

The article in EGM specifically states the graphics are NOT meant to be photo realistic (anyone not blind person can tell that).
They then go on to say they were aiming for "moving paintings", and the thick black lines (typical to "cel-shaded" models) are to help bring them that much closer.
In closing, if this looks "photo-realistic" to you (http://news.filefront.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/media.jpg), then you have some serious problems that need to be addressed by a therapist, asap.
Someone close this.

In the EGM article Ono said he isn't aiming for photo realism...
EDIT: Got beaten to it.

Even children with autism and fishbowls over their heads deserve the opportunity to play Street Fighter. :arazz:

The style is fresh and looks like Street Fighter I think. It looks like the art, the anatomy has the same disctinctive exageration. I'm hardcore 2D but I agree with the article, there's not much room for improvement on SF3.
