hit me with your honest opinions: when you're looking for a tutorial for your character(s), what essential things are you looking for? so, after checking responses: strengths, weaknesses...of moves & strategies...tips and understanding on game mechanics that can be applied outside of the character, match-ups vs naturally tough opponents, combos, mix-ups...

A feel for the character's general strengths and weaknesses. Like, how the character is meant to be played.

ex: Zangief is a grappler. His command throws are the crux of his gameplay. However, he is generally slow and has limited tools allowing him to get in on his opponent. Zangiefs basic play style is score a knockdown and mix up to get SPDs...etc...

BnB Combos and useful combos. Pretty self explanatory.

Hard matchups. Explaining how to get in or out of tough situations. etc...

Tricks.

I dunno, shit that you would tell a person if you were teaching him the character.

When I look at a tutorial/guide/FAQ/whatever, I'm not just looking for a list of moves and various trivia. I'm looking for something that will help me to better understand the characters, the strategies, and the games themselves. I want to come away with something more useful than just a list of things to commit to rote memory.

I think James Chen's Alpha 3 and CvS2 game guides are exemplary. He doesn't list moves, but instead, he gives you a set of tools you can use to really get the games. Understanding the game better makes the difference between becoming your own well-rounded player, and just being a guy who copies styles and strategies from YouTube vids.

Hmm...what I look for in tutorials huh? Well, I try to steer away from using them in the first place; my philosophy is that whoever you want to use and how you use him/her is the best way to learn a single character. Thats my opinion, thats the way I usually do things (when I was really into fighting games before I joined the Army lol; I'm slowly getting back into it!!!). For example, if you play Tekken nowadays, when I see folks use King they are not always grabbing/grappling because his repitorie is large enough to play with him the way you want tot play...either grapple-worthy or dialing in combos and countering at the right times. However you want to play with a character is your choice; as long as you practice with them and find out what works for you, then do the damn thang!!! :)
