View Full Version : SF-friendly controller?

Maybe it's just me, but the X360 and PS3 controllers are both absolute garbage for 6-button SF. I don't mind the PS2 controller, but PS3's analog trigger for R2 doesn't work too well (same with X360s RT button), and button taps using my left hand (L1 for PS3, LB for X360) doesn't feel natural at all.
Do you think Capcom should release a more SF-friendly controller? Maybe something with six buttons on the pad (like the Alpha collection controller) or a (decent) third-party arcade joystick. Perhaps it could come in a bundle with the game. (I would pay whatever the fuck they'd charge for a good joystick).
Or do I have to get some homemade arcade sticks made? :(

I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a couple arcade sticks available for when the game finally does release, or for the games you currently play, but I would love to see a special SF4 arcade stick to bundle with the game. And would love to see it even more if it was made with quality parts. ;)

They have the Ex2 Hori available right now for the 360 and PS3, I would not be suprised if they do a SF themed Hori for HD remix or SF4.

haha I know what you mean about the R2/L2 triggers. I was able to get used to using L1/R1 and I also have a PS joystick and converter so i'm good.

This is going to be very important to me and my enjoyment of the game. All I need is a 360 compatible Saturn pad, and I'm set!
Sadly, the smushy 1st party MS controller d-pad won't cut it at all. And, buying a new MAS/Anniversary/Custom stick for every system that comes out with a SF game is getting really old.

If you have a PS3, just buy a HRAP3, mod it with sanwa or seimitsu buttons and call it a day.

how often does a new system come out?

I prefer joysticks, no doubt about that! However, my MAS is out of date, only works with PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I also have the SFAC stick that works with PS2 and XBOX, and a custom-built x-arcade-based TABLE that has 2 sets of sticks and 6 buttons.
Alas, I have nothing that works with 360 or PS3. I'm aware of some adapters, but I'm not sure if I trust them unless there is NO input lag.
I have money to spend on new sticks, I'm just running out of room for all this shit.
EDIT: I just checked that arcadeinabox site, they seem perfect! I'm gonna need one of those at least by the time HD Remix comes out...

Check the converter thread in tech talk. The pelican adapter is good, good stuff.

I can actually do Hadoukens and shoryuken's consistently on a keyboard, was messing around with it oneday. Now all I need to do is master Gief's 360 SPD on the keyboard and I'm game :lovin:.

As far as controllers, Sega Saturn and Sega Genesis 6 Button controllers had the best controllers for ANY fighting game. Bar none.

I would love for them to make a bundle like that. This would make SF4 a much more enjoyable experience to everyone if they don't have a stick already.

Button placement change the fact that the pad sucked.

Playing on keyboard is natural for me , seeing as I never play on anything else. I can do anything except 360's consistently , which makes for some good play , minus T.Hawk and Zangief. I use pads in 3D games , but in 2D games (SF) , i've only used keyboards. I've never experienced the joy of a stick though.

Yeh same here, not missing much though if you can use every other character in the game with ease. I've managed to beat a fair few people with Thawk without his 360, though getting a KO with one is very statisfying

with controller its hard to play anyway.. if u need all the buttons
cos i struggle to actually use the L and R buttons lol, (especially the Ls) so i cant connect my combos together. which is why a joystick is more ideal for the game.
(e.g yun combo... bah get a cramp on the fingers).. ok exaggeration

You didn't care for the angle of the button layout, I'm guessing?
I can see that, I suppose.
The D-pad on the Saturn controller was the best ever, though - by far.
But yeah... whenever you can, get an HRAP3.
They're running, what - $100, sans shipping?
That's like 1.75 PS3 games.
