ps: if you really want to debate me and other satanic atheists, come to whywontgodhealamputees forums, where fallen xtians and other sinners preach their gospel of blasphemy. this way we can have our debate without it being locked. after all, christ calls you to be a fisher of men no?

Well I don't know about greatest but I think George Washington is the man and often over looked. Sure he was the first president and that's all well and good but I think more importantly he led a group of rebels and beat the greatest military forces in the history of civilization.

Also after the war was over there was also lots of squabbling and some of his generals were plotting to install a military dictatorship but Washington went in front of his generals and delivered a single line that united America, "Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have not only grown gray but almost blind in the service of my country." The generals that were conspiring were so moved that they became so ashamed and dropped their plans. Not even the Gettysburg address can touch that.

oh and on topic, i think it would be someone such as alexander the great or genghis temujin khan, both of whom were incredibly badass mofos who shit all over the world for free. that's if we define greatest as those who held the most power.

but if we define greatest as who had the biggest contribution toward humanity, i'd say it'd be one of the greeks. i'm not sure which one, but seeing as how they invented math, medicine, and philosophy, they're up there.

There is so much to math, that you can't say who invented it. Calculus and Algebra are math but clearly not invented by Greeks. The numerical system used is clearly not a greek one either. The notation system is not Greek either, and it's hard to claim much advanced until you could notate it.

Modern medicine is fairly new, and you can credit it mostly to the US. Non-modern medicine has been around since the dawn of time, and you can credit it to hundreds of civilizations all discovering things on their own.

Socrates was fairly worthless if you've read most of his material. I'm not sure if any philosopher can be considered a great contributor to mankind.

I bet it's the Queen of England, as England controlled pretty much the entire world at some point, and affected the future course of history. I think it was the Queen during that age. Maybe it was a king. I dunno, but I guess feminists would have seized on a Queen if it was that.

Edit-The only philosopher that had a huge noticeable effect is probably John Locke, as our Constitution is modeled after what he thought. Or we could skip right to whoever came up with the constitution.

archimedes was on the verge of discovering calculus. he was just a bit off. he was working with infinitesimals in a way almost similar to how people calculate integrals today. among other things, he was able to approximate pi, derive the formula for the area of a circle, and figure out the volume of a sphere. the greek mathematicians were in a class on their own.

the numerical system isn't greek, but the math notation system used today is greek, so i don't know what you mean by that. it uses the greek alphabet. pi, sigma, delta, epsilon, alpha, beta omega, and so on are used to this day. that's one indication of their influence.

It is hard to single out a sole individual for the title of "greatest person who ever lived," so I created various categories listed below. If I was forced to name a single person, then the answer IS Genghis Khan.

- In terms of medieval/ancient ass-kicking, harlot ravaging, village burninating: Temujin, better known by his title Genghis Khan (Oceanic/Heavenly Chieftain/King/Ruler). His descendants would have ruled the entire Eurasian land mass if whichever emperor came after Ugdai did not order his generals back to Mongolia in order to pay homage to him.

- In terms of religion: Ankhenaten, inventor of monotheism. Without him, there would never have been a Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad.

- In terms of technology: whoever discovered metal working. One can also make an argument for whichever hominid figured out that using a sharp rock enables one to butcher carrion before other, dangerous less intelligent, scavengers arrive but that hominid is not human (Homo sapiens sapiens)

- In terms of education: Johannes Gutenberg for inventing the printing press and enabling mass literacy.

- In terms of technological warfare: The unknown, 9th century AD Chinese alchemist who discovered gunpowder by accidentally blowing his face off while searching for eternal life.

- In terms of self-help manuals: Sun Tzu and Niccolò Machiavelli.

- In terms of founding a country: Qin Shi Huang Di, the first Emperor of China.

- In terms of ruling an empire: Augustus Caesar.

- In terms of conquering the world: Genghis Khan. Alexander the Great, Napoleon, and Atilla the Hun made a few key mistakes. Atilla lost the battle of Chalons, decided NOT to conquer the Roman Empire when he had a chance, and literally drowned in his own blood due to passing out drunk on his wedding night with a nose bleed (major loss of man points there). Napoleon invaded Russia in the fall and later when he had a chance to make up for his mistake and seize it all back at Waterloo, he reportedly delayed his attack in order to take a diarrhea dump. JUST SHIT IN YOUR PANTS! You can always buy another pair after you take back Europe. Alexander the Great's only real mistake was not keeping up troop morale in nothern India. He was forced to turn around and on the way back contracted an known disease, that combined with his heavy drinking, caused him to kick the bucket. If he had kept up troop morale then he would probably have ruled everything from Europe to China.

Our time line is dictated by Jesus' life.

Actually, our calender is based on Jesus's birthdate plus four years. Jesus was probably born in 4 "BC" and died in AD 30 at age 33 (There is no year zero in our current calender).

That is not so much Jesus' doing, but Christians taking the ball and running with it.

Basically, it is Paul of Tarsus and the Roman Emperor Constantine's doing.

If you're going to vote on a religious figure, you should vote on Buddha or Abraham, as Abraham gave rise to the Big Three religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) and Buddha , well, self explanatory.

At any rate, greatest person to live as far as influencing us in our day to day life would probably be....hmm, I don't know...one of the greek philosophers, Cicero maybe, or Alexander?

Yes, I know Cicero and Alexander weren't greek nor really philosophers, just other examples. Caesar had a LOT of influence on western history. I mean the first 2000 years of history are basically: Rome, then everyone trying to be rome

I like people listed for impacting a large group of people in anyway. If that's the case, let's just throw up Hulk Hogan lol

This question is crazy hard, but I'd say you better look to the fields of science, math, and engineering for the person (not religion ). Like, Tesla was pretty important. Personally I'm a fan of having 120 volts AC pumping through the place I live :) Edison and his people came up with some nice stuff, which others continued and advanced further. Kind of helpful to our lives

if we're gonna list religious figures, then i'd say emperor constantine, who convened the council of nicea and decided the standard set of beliefs for all christians to come, is the greatest person to ever live. before this, christianity was just another cult, but this sparked its growth and elevated its status. paul may have invented christianity, and jesus may or may not have existed, but constantine gave the cult legitimacy. and it has had a tremendous impact on civilization ever since.

joseph smith, L ron hubbard, and muhammed can only dream of the levels of impact this religion has had.

J-ride
12-18-2007, 02:50 AM
Well, I'd give props to the brave individuals who through much tedious work and dedication, were able to bring scientific reasoning into medicine. Before that doctors, were pretty much just bleeders, and had very limited knowledge on how the body actually worked. In particular, people like James Carrol who was able to prove through experimentation that mosquitos caused yellow fever. That kind of mindset in medicine has allowed for great advances in just 100 or so years, and allowed for many people to enjoy longer, and fuller lives. But as far as just giving it to one person, I think that is too difficult of a task to do.

Will Gotti
