I've been seeing quite a bit of this MLG shiz around, and it seems pretty interesting how you can actually form a team(and if your good enough) be sponsored. The only problem i've noticed is that I've only seen ONE fighting game being offered and that's DOA.(Please correct me if i'm wrong though) Why is it that they don't sponser games such as any of the SF series? Or any other fighting game for that matter. Would it even be possible to incorporate any other fighting games into MLG, that would be team based? Maybe have 3-to-4 man teams duke it out in some SF. It Kinda seems like the MLG players get more recognition as the events are televised, and it seems that it also draws more crowds to those particular games. Maybe that would help the fighting game world idk. Just throwin out some random shit. Anywayz feel free to voice your opinions and shit.

You act like MLG is more than willing to bend over backwards to help small competitive communities, but SF players just never thought it was a good idea. Think about the fact that this probably wouldn't benefit MLS one bit.

Why is it that they don't sponser games such as any of the SF series? Or any other fighting game for that matter.

Because the SF series n the fighting game genre as a whole isn't nearly as popular or widely played as all the other games currently on the MLG roster.

HF for XBLA sold 2million and is still the best selling XBLA title but i doubt putting it on the MLG would generate the same interest and revenue as other more modern games like guitar hero.

It's all about the masses just look at it this way; how many ppl play marvel and how many play halo3? The fighting game genre will most likely never reach the same heights of popularity as they had back in the arcade heydays but lets hope STHD and SF4 push fighting games more into the mainstream.

MLG USED to have Smash, but they dropped it cause it couldn't compete with the numbers halo brings to the tourneys. SF would probably bring similar numbers to smash, so its likely that that is the reason they never bothered picking it up.

I heard MLG didnt pay up prize checks, and wong + crew fuckin told up mr. wizard, wizard brought the hammer down and basically said fuck MLG, the community followed suit.

but everytime MLG came by my parts the FG tournies they had for mvc2 sf3 and t5 always had like the same 5 cats in every tourny. it wasnt even like a big competition was more like 5 dudes playin for a 100 pot, that aint no tourny, thats what you call a small get together.

Thats pretty inaccurate. Smash in 2006 had growth from beginning to end and capped out at just about every tournament, including 204 people at the NY Playoffs. The least attended event was the opener, which missed the cap by 1 with 143 people. Additionally, after MLG Anaheim when approximately 53 people were turned away, the cap was increased permanently for the season (MLG expanded the cap at that event to allow less people to be turned away, approximately 184 made it in).

MLG sponsored 4 underground Smash tournaments this year that had the following results:

Farmingdale (71 Participants)
May 5-6th
Long Island, New York
1. KoreanDJ $835
2. Mew2King $434
3. PC Chris $200
4. Bum $100
5. ChuDat $66
6. Chillin $33

Pound 2 (200 Participants)
June 16-17th
Mount Airy, Maryland
1. ChuDat $2400
2. Mew2King $1040
3. PC Chris $520
4. Chillin $260
5. Drephen $156
5. PC Chris $156
7. DaShizWiz $104
7. Taj $104
9. KeepSpeen $65
9. KM $65
9. Forward $65
9. Cort $65

FC Diamond (256 Participants)
July 12-14th
Southbend, Indiana
1. Mew2King $2,000
2. PC Chris $1,000
3. ChuDat $500
4. Drephen $350
5. Vidjo $225
5. Taj $225
7. Darkrain $125
7. DaShizWiz $125
($10,000 in prizes were distributed across singles, doubles, 64, and crews)

SCC (200 Participants)
September 29-30th
San Bernidino, California
1. Mew2King $2,000
2. PC Chris $1,000
3. Mango $400
4. Cort $280
5. ChuDat $160
5. Wobbles $160
7. Forward
7. Ken

Comparing 2007 numbers with the 3 games that joined the 2007 Professional Circuit and Smash actually does better than every game except Halo and GoW. GoW Smash essentially has similar number too, as GoW has a 72 team cap (and it didn't cap every event), + 8 Pro teams meaning if it caps, GoW gets roughly 300 players, and if it doesn't cap the numbers are basically what Smash tournaments get when they cap, the only tournament that didn't reach its cap was Farmingdale. Pound 2 and SCC had caps of 200 and FC had a cap of 256.

MLG dropped Smash for reasons undisclosed to the public but easily discovered when you read between the lines. Look at every title on the professional circuit and also consider that Xbox 360 decided to sponsor the professional circuit this year.

SF numbers can't compete with Smash.

You're wrong (that isn't supposed to sound harsh). Your thinking of CGS (Championship Gaming Series). They run DOA and follow a league format similar to the NBA or NFL with franchises. They also use the world as their medium, not just the united states (like MLG). The only televised game for MLG is Halo, and that has been the only one televised both in 2006 and 2007. MLG has a more lucrative TV deal than CGS has they broadcasted the 2006 season on USA and the 2007 season is being broadcasted on G4. Compare that to CGS essentially only broadcasting to subscribers of their specific channel on DirecTV.

Blah Blah Blah. Major League Gayness is garbage anyhow. At least CGS has Counter-Strike. MLG took Smash away. So I hope they die, and I hope they burn in hell.

Speaking of CGS, I watched it for the very 1st time a few days ago. As much as I hate DOA4 they sure did make it look crump as hell with the team based play, the coaches and what not. One of these days as soon as I get some cash I'm gonna sponsor my homeboy for Call of Duty 4. $'$

They don't want the skill based games.

I disagree that FPS' take no skill, try playing some of those fucks in Halo and UT.

It takes just as much skill as a Fighting game IMO

Was the sole purpose of creating an account on SRK to enlighten people about SSBM? It sure seems like it .

Anyway, from my understanding, it had to do with the payouts. The FGC eventually boycotted MLG because of it. Obviously, MLG isn't going to run a one person tournament. Not sure if that's correct or not, though.

If it can't be said here then can someone PM me the full story on what happened when they put fighting games on MLG?

I dunno what everyone has against the MLG players they are the best in the worldat what they play and i respect their skill same way we all respect daigos beastliness.

My understanding of it is that for certain games they change the standard rules/format n lots of ppl find that gay or stupid or whatever well changing the rules/format of a game doesn't detract from skill IMO yall just a bunch of haters.

EDIT: can someone tell me exactly what rules/format they use for their games cuz my n my crew have been interested in trying out for MLG in gears n halo.

Was the sole purpose of creating an account on SRK to enlighten people about SSBM? It sure seems like it .

Yes, that was the primary purpose, and secondary to learn more about other fighting games/the FGC.

Also, that really isn't a debate about MLG rules. Gamebattles is essentially a third party contracted by MLG to run MLG Gametypes and online tournaments. Gamebattles uses all their own staff, not all of whom know what they are doing. Hmm...maybe I should rephrase, Gamebattles is owned by MLG, but kept its staff. Okay, that should work.

Trust me, EVERY ref on the professional circuit knows that a game ends at the 15 mark unless its tied/the score differential is less than or equal to one and the flag is not at home. Do you honestly think the refs want to sit around for extra 15 minute ever ctf game?
