I just came home from a trip and got on my computer... I go to open up a file from my external hard drive... and this shit is completely empty. I tried restarting my computer after this... then the HD wasn't even listed in the drives anymore. I went to look up troubleshooting on this on Western Digital's site... and according to their FAQ I need to pay for data recovery and it seems fairly pricey.

Any other ideas for what I can do? Programs? Masturbate until I forget about it?

Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS is what I used when this happened to me but it took a LONG time (I'm talking a half a day to a day, it was 120GB I think). I forget what exactly the error was (a problem in the drive's boot sector), but most of the stuff from it was recovered, save for numerous files over 1-2GB (all of my virtual hard drives for Virtual PC were lost).

There are also some tools to try to fix it , like PTDD Partition Table Doctor and Active@ Partition Recovery.

Seems strange a HD would do that but I would suggest using the same program JedahsMinistry recommended (Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS) because I have used it in the past and it didn't take all that long (restored a 150gb 7200rpm HD in about 7 hours). However, when you get everything working I'd suggest a new HD because something is obviously wrong and you probably don't want it happening again.
