Depends on what you want in an external. Do you want a lot of space, or do you want something small and portable? I usually end up buying my own hard drive and a separate enclosure for it. Frys.com usually has some good deals on hard drives that they like to switch around periodically like this 650GB Seagate for $110 (http://shop1.outpost.com/product/5448089?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) or a 500GB Seagate for $100 (http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4795159?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG). Seagates have a 5 year warranty so that's a plus. Just get a separate enclosure for it for around $20 or so from Newegg and you're good to go. Lots of options there. Maybe something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145385)? If you want something smaller, just get a 2.5" laptop hard drive and an appropriate enclosure from the sites previously mentioned. Those usually run on USB power without the need of plugging it into a wall socket so that's also a plus.
Here's some retail externals that you also may be interested in after some quick searching:

I was suggling with a shitty 40 gigs if harddrive space on my laptop till I bought a Seagate. Got 250 Gig in a nice small package that sits nicely next to my modem. I can run ISOs and emulators off it effortlessly since it runs pretty quick.
Happy shopping
