I recently got my hands on a copy of MvC2 for the PS2 and as you may or may not know it's one of the blue CD discs as opposed to a DVD disc. Now my PS2 has had trouble reading CDs in the past, but always worked eventually. Lately though it hasn't worked at all. When I put them in, all I get is a grindy sort of noise before it informs me that the disc can't be read. Is there a reason for this that can be fixed or should I just get a PS3? If it helps, I have a fat PS2, a fairly old one at that.

Thanks

put two parallel pieces of scotch tape at the label side center of the disc.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you be a little more specific?

I believe JubeiNinja69 is telling you to attach scotch tape to your game disc on the side that is opposite to the data side (the data side being the blue side), and probably ideally right at the inner edge of the label on this surface. Affix one piece of tape on a tangent to this edge, then affix another one of equal length to the other side of the hole so that the tape is parallel to the first piece. If I remember correctly this is to increase the thickness of the disc so that it doesn't slip between the internal saddle and upper brace and the disc's rotation will in turn begin to match the speed of the saddle's spinning, or something...

You could also try turning on diagnosis at the PS2's main screen, but if you didn't adjust anything or replace any parts then it might not do any good. You could probably fix your problem more permanently by adjusting the voltage setting on your PS2 but that's risky and I wouldn't endorse it.

Ok...so just basically put an equal sign made of tape over the hole in the disc on the side that's not blue? Sounds simple enough. I'm so totally not fantastic at fixing shit v_v

Yeah this happens to a lot of PS2s uh, I did the scotch tape method but it was a very temporary solution. call Sony and they'll replace it for you. maybe 40 bucks for a new one? I forget, good luck.

Well the tape thing is working so far. Slight scary moment at first when it made a really bad noise but a little corner of the tape had popped up was all. Stuck it back down and have been playing for the past couple hours so we'll see where this goes I guess. Thanks for the advice.

I've had this problem before. There's an incredibly effective/simple fix that'll solve your disk read problems almost perfectly, but it requires you to open your PS2.

Just clean the lens with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Works absolute wonders. And be super careful not to break that thing connecting the top and bottom parts of the case. If you do that, your system is fucked.
