Say you were to make a happ stick and undermount the joystick in 3/4 material, would you route out a recess underneath for the stick base to fit into? This would be to add some stick height.

No, not normally. Are you saying like if you had a special request to have more height added?

Happ sticks are typically designed for simple 4-bolt mounting to 3/4" MDF, with no routing. The standard thickness is 3/4" (like in an Arcade Cabinet) so most people prefer that thickness. (There is no routing involved with the happ-stick mounting in a typical arcade cab. It's very rare to have that.)

Also, bear in mind the Ultimate Joystick has adjustable shaft length as well. The mas-stick uses 1/2" MDF, with just simple overlay material (no plexi/lexan). 1/2" seems to be the minimum thickness when it comes to mdf+Happ. The way the sticks are used by most people, it tends to be pretty rough by nature; so it's a bit more ify compared to the japanese-style, which can be mounted to virtually anything and still not rough up the bolt-holes.

So unless they're asking for a custom, non-standard job, the answer is: no. 3/4" material is a standard 4-bolt undermount, no routing, with a standard 1-1/8" hole for the stick. If they are wanting more stick-height, the best solution is a metal-mount, but a compromise could be 1/2" thickness (either routed, or for the overall control panel), combined with the adjustable Ultimate-Stick shaft.

I hope that's along the lines of the answer you were looking for.
