View Full Version : Do you guys know anything about ASPI.SYS?
Been ignored on every tech forum I've been on so far and I don't understand why. Just wanted to know if anybody knew what the hell this thing did and how important it is. It's raping my computer with CPU (50% usage on format/restart by itself) and suspending it's function removes that load. I have no idea how important it is and whether or not I can just disable it without harm. As far as I know I don't have any SCSI products, but I get conflicting information about what it really does. It supposedly handles IDE/ATAPI drives as well so I don't know how serious a problem disabling this thing is. Can anybody help?

ASPI stands for the Advanced SCSI Programming Interface, while you probably don't have SCSI devices.
There's ways to reinstall the aspi driver. If that doesn't work, then there might be something wrong with windows.

which service pack do you have? Are you using XP?

As far as your computer being dragged down by unnecessary proggies goes... (you could have anywhere from 20-60 programs running on start-up)
Go: Start > Run > MsConfig > Startup -- uncheck everything that you can (non-mouse, sound, keyboard, firewall related items). When you're unsure about certain items, google them and you will reach sites that discuss usefulness of the processes and whether or not they are needed (you will usually find you can uncheck it).

ASPI.sys is a big deal though, it's the driver that lets your PC see your burners as burners and not just as CDROM drives.
I'd install this: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v470_exe.htm the aspi layer shouldn't be showing up as a process though, so a new one should rectify things.
I guess it's better to clarify my situation.
The issue is that this problem showed up about 2 weeks ago. After a week of me thinking it was just my computer getting bogged down by adware or crap I decided to just format since that usually solves any problems I'd usually have performance-wise. Now that I have formatted though, the problem is still there and I only just found out that it was ASPI.SYS that was causing the problem with the aid of Process Explorer.
My Task Manager only tells me that my System is the cause of 20-30% CPU Usage which internally is ASPI.SYS that's the cause of this. If that weren't enough, Deferred Procedure Calls and Hardware Interrupts make up the other 20-30% pushing my CPU Usage to the 50-60% mark. This occurs after formatting twice and installing all drivers only. No internet connection, nothing. Just driver installation.
Is there a way to narrow down what piece of hardware is the root of this problem? I've tried updating my ASPI to no avail and it seems like it might be something else, but I'm not sure how to find out.
edit: I am running Windows XP SP2 currently. This problem is recent and I had not installed any new hardware so that can't be the cause. I also have no hardware conflicts as far as I can see in my Device Manager.
