Although I don't want to make this sound like a lame New Year's Declaration after perusing through viral videos on the internet and watching an obese kid being able to do backflips with ease it kinda irked me, as I've always wanted to be able to do it- without breaking my neck.

So for you cool breakers and gymnasts on SRK (lol) any advice on how to practice or pull one off safely?

bad idea. it gives you a false sense of jump. just do it on the floor....be it a gymnastics open gym or backyard.

i do not recommend doing flips on tramps..i recommend doing twists but not flips.\

Yeah don't hesitate. You'll fuck yourself up if you do that.

For some odd reason I can't do a back handspring. I can do the back flip no hands easy, but those handspring I cannot get it. It's like my back won't do the necessary bending that it needs in order for me to do it.

yes and no.

backflips have more mometum to them but have more of a dangerous freakout factor. if you dont have a good sense of air awareness when you freakout at first you can easily land on you head.

but on a front flip even if you have a bad sense of air awareness its harder to lander on your head...your far more likely to land on your back/butt.

but its really all in the arms...the tighter the tuck on front and backs the faster the rotation and the sooner you can see the ground and plant your feet for the landing.

you can have poor jumps but if you have good technique it can cover it. i have alot of height due to me being a very active person....i specifically do leg press for tricks and flips. i know a guy in canada who had shitty height but his tech was good so he tucked well and spun fast for the rotation because of it and was safe.

Thanks, yours is cool, it keeps remindin me that I need to start practice drawing the fly kick pose.

I've been reading/watching the backflip tutorials and they all have the same technique for doing a backflip, but I notice breakers and gymnasts seem to do those crazy fully elevated backflips with their legs almost straight in the air. Guess I'd need some strength training for that.

the more you do backflips and work on the tech the stronger they get. bboys and gymnasts in general dont start flipping immediately. bboys are doing dance....foundation...hitting beats...alot of leg movement hence they have good big jumps cause their legs are already conditioned.

gymnasts do alot of shit before they flips and big majority of them have been doing it since they were 6. you can clearly tell in that one vid wit the gay guy he's been at it for a long time. he didnt get that big overnight.

also sumtin you'll learn from doing backflips...instant 6 pack. seriously. u do a few backflips in a row...next morning ur fucked.

about how long do you think it'd take to hit a backflip for the first time? like i can dunk so i can get up decently, is it just a matter of getting the technique or is there some other skill that needs to be "learned"?

oh jesus you got plenty of height if you can dunk. as long as you dont have too big a fear factor you can easily start hitting backflips within a week. hell most within days..its just most people have a fear factor..wheres joe rogan?....its not that they physically cant do them..their just afraid to. i have a big fear on flips alot of times...but someone grow sum balls and just do them.

I had no idea what I was doing. The only advice my friends gave was to try running as many steps up the wall. Evidently you're really only supposed to do one large step, so yeah that messed me up. I ended up trying 5 times and falling on my head twice.

Backflips ain't too tough. Just jump up as high as you can, then tuck in your knees to help you flip over.

Try to land on the same spot as when you take off, otherwise you won't get as much height and the flip doesn't look as good.

After doing this, you can progress to gainers.

Just try it, don't be scurrrreeed.

The Chief
01-02-2008, 11:13 AM
lol Just do it!

Start off with a "round-off" which is basically just a running cart-wheel where you land with both feet at the same time and your back in the direction you we're running.

Then, use that momentum and jump while* doing a back bend. The momentum will propel your feet up and over your head and HOPEFULLY they will hit the ground before your neck does.

- or* do a back-bend to go into a back hand-spring. More momentum = more hand springs. You can jump whenever you want and go into a back-flip with the above instructions.

The "lol" is because just the other day I was thinking about how I use to do back flips when I was a kid for no reason. A friend taught me how to do it and I remember having a heart attack after I did it on the first try. I can still do them to this day but they hurt like hell. I suggest stretching before trying this.

Once you get good at them you can improvise by balling yourself up and possibly do multiple flips or extending your legs and spinning you body do to some twists. =)

Good luck!

maxx

no doing round off is too much for new kids. and they can easily fuck them selves up more from it..since a round off you will go more back than normal. and if they dont understand the mechanics of a round off and a basic backflip they can fuck themselves up.

new people should just do a backflip. you dont need all these unessisary extra training..u dont need round offs nor learning back bends...also not everyone is physically capabable of doing backbends....back hand springs..that takes some training to get that flexibility and since alot of srkers are in their early to late 20's imma guess they dont normally have that.

no no..just do a backflip thats all u need. get to a local open gym pay dat 10 bucks and ask them to teach u a backflip.

The Chief
01-02-2008, 11:27 AM
Makes sense. I just typed how I learned how to do them. For some reason it's harder (and scarier) for me to do a whole back flip standing in place... even if I land on my hands first.

I learned by doing round-offs into back flips/springs. I guess I thought that was the universal way, but then again that is like three times the work for the desired outcome.

Front flips are terrifying and I never want to do one. I tried once and landed flat on my back. I brushed them off as pointless and uncool so that I wouldn't want to do it again.

Yeah, the worst thing is the fear...
Probably a big help is having a spotter. He's spotting you doing the flips, telling you what you're doing wrong and catching you when you screw up. Also, with a spotter, before you know it, you'll have conquered that fear. You'll be throwing flips like nothing because you know you have that spotter there. And he'll say something like, "That was all you, I didn't even have my hands out to catch you!"
That's how I learned a backflip anyway.

Yeah I tried to do it on my carpet today but even with a soft ground I can't seem to do it, my body stiffens up even at the though of tucking in mid-air. I definitely need a spotter.

I think the best place to do it at is an actual gymnastics center, especially if you're doing it for the first time.

If you do it at home and crack your neck, then who's gonna call the paramedics?

Also the gymnastics floor is a lot softer than your carpet at home and you can also get more bounce.

of course you can not have good height, but most people who want to learn "just a back flip" just want the backflip. thats why you see alot of people who can randomly do backflips and front flips but nothing else. most of those people learned it easy in few tries because they had great height. techique and height are all factors so if you lack one im telling him he better have one of the other.

i hate skipping around in tricks, i get the major move ahead of time and it kills motivation to learn the inbetweens.

Something about backflips, don't fucking hesitate on the tuck; that's how you break your neck. Better to land on your back/knees than your head.

I personally stay the hell away from them just because you can have the technique down perfectly and slip and break your neck. It's not like an airflare or other moves where there's a proper way to fall and whatnot.

Nice an SRKer that can airflare. They were the hottest in the late nineties but you dont expect many SF players to break all that well. About backflips, yeah I just stopped doing them after a while since I had other moves I wanted to get down cleanly and there are so many people in the world that can backflip 10x cleaner, higher, and with more "pizazz" than I could ever do.

I remember a time I trained 360 twists right after training backflips, I was going for a regualr backflip did 1/4 a rotation, freaked out mid air and landed on my hands and neck. The impact knocked my eye lids foreward. I still backflipped later, but I think it was a somewhat traumatic experience.

hyper cheat 900 twist. dont fucking do them. its a hard move, but there are harder cooler moves out there that wont screw you over.

i did the move perfectly fine and usually land ok, but (after analyzing in my head i think what it was, was that) i did lots of plyometrics that day and my foot/leg couldnt support all the sideways momentum. same feeling you get when you try to stop in any hyper move...

big snap. twisted the bridge of my foot, broke one bone, dislocated 4 toes, and tore a ligament. never had a real injury from tricking before that. had 2 surgeries done and resume physical theraphy tomorrow. they got rid of the 3 wolverine-like pins (pic up later) have to get one more surgery later to get rid of a huge screw in my foot.

my guess is that hyper c900 twists are popular by now, but if you dont know what it is i think logan does one in his old samps / i think on club540. garuganto also does one in the onimusha 3 trailer. move is not worth it.

haha idk what tricks you're sporting but i think most non-man hos try not to trick because its too easy to get laid and the girl will only want you for your flipping body (not your "personality" and "kind spirit." ;) haha nah i'd actually think parkour gets more girls cuz its something they can easily understand. most girls dunno the difference between a one armed aitrack and regular one, or a double btiwst from a caliroll.

haime is sick btw, was always very under-rated. dunno if they've realized him fully now, but early 2000s he had friggin hardass moves and clean, yet no one said much on tt. was kinna shocked. tell haime "omer says thanks for the ancient 1080 club 540 clip"

I've only ever backflipped on accident, and nearly had a heart attack, too (obviously, I didn't quite land it, but I got really close). Stupid moonbounce. Definitely tucked at the right time, or it wouldn't have happened.

...should totally do that on purpose some time.

This sucks, no gymnasiums in my area. Guess I just need to practice on my own.

search harder youll find a gym. youll learn good technique. AND you wont die and break your back.

I wish I lived in Alaska, then I could get 1000 bucks a month for doing nothing.

I'm sure there are gym around the crappy area but I want to find one within a certain radius. I don't feel like travelling past a 10 mile radius just to learn a backflip.

OT: since theres no tricking thread or anything about the circuit, espn2 just had the us open on and i think its the 2007 one. they still had the xma contest and mens forms to go in a later addition and they usually show them through out the week so tomorrow they might show the xma contest. anyone on the west coast check espn 2 and you might find the part i just watched.

This is the worst sound I have ever heard. . .

That hurt just looking at it, not to mention how he landed and how it sounded......
