Unfortunately I will be selling my nice car pretty soon, and instead of just taking the bus everywhere, I thought it would be fun to get a scooter so I can zip around town and school now and then. So, I was wondering, who here has a scooter and what sort of things I should know before getting one?
Are they easy to ride, cause I don't think I need a special motorcycle license or lessons for one, I just jump on and ride...?
And the insurance, it should be cheaper than a car right? Same for gas?
do chicks like scooters or what? :()

I've seen guys ride around my school with scooters. Good luck looking straight riding those things. Try a skateboard or longboard.
EDIT: Oops..I didn't read ALL of your post and I thought you were talking about like Razor Scooters.

Around here it's the vehicle you get when you're 14 and can't drive yet.
For what I've gathered it's something looked down upon to be old enough to drive but still ride one of those.

I used to have a scooter. I still have it actually, but I don't use it anymore. Although uncool in America, here in Japan they can be pretty useful.
Riding is actually not difficult at all. Just think of a bicycle that moves itself. It might take a little while to get used to the feeling of being "naked" on the highway, but eventually you'll get the hang of it.
You can ride in the rain, but just be extra careful and don't go too fast. Avoid any dirt or loose gravel on the road, as it will cause the tires to slip out from under you can you'll crash.
You'll probably want to get a full helmet. For scooters sometimes you can get away with just the hat-type helmet, but that has no facial protection for wind, rain, or bugs that'll fly into your face. I can't count the number of times I was grateful for my full helmet with some large insect smacked right into the visor. I also had a bad spill and hit my head fairly hard, but thanks to the helmet I had no head injuries. My collarbone on the other hand...
As for legal stuff/insurance, I never owned a scooter in America so I can't help you there, sorry.

Haha, scooters. More like hair dryers... All the scum bags ride around on them thinking they're class, 50MPH, go me!

not sure about US but in Canada scooters/mopeds are classed as "limited speed" motorcycles, thus, requiring licensing that is M2. For us, it goes M1 (written) - M2 (road or obtained through training course) - M (full road test).
Insurance should be cheaper than a car, yes...motorcycles/scooters will usually be priced based on make or cc. The name Vespa and having like...100cc (?) does not scream high insurance premium. But hey...US can be pretty ass backwards sometimes, just like Canada can be.
So yeah, have fun! Make sure you wear a tailored suit + cape when you ride one. I saw this once and I just didn't have it in me to nudge the guy off the road...the way he looked riding it just made me understand he was suffering enough.
