View Full Version : Ever think of relocating?

I've been thinking of relocating to Florida. Miami to be exact, and I was wondering how people who have made a big move like that have adjusted. I know some people have moved over seas and there are language barriers and cultural barriers to over come, but I wondering how some people faired in the transition and why they made the move in the first place.

I'd like to hear some responses on this. I have thought about it, but I feel I should stay close while my grandmothers are still around.
I am uneasy about just moving somewhere that I don't know anybody at all and would have zero backup. Especially just for a mere job that may not even work out. I know people do it all the time, but still.

I've actually given this some thought, although it's stupid for me considering I moved into my own place in September. Within a few years, and after serious consideration and research, I might make that switch. Right now, it's a matter of where.
The question is, what's making you want to move? No work in your field? Lack of family and friends?

I have thought about it, but only if I could make more money than I could here in the US.

Ever since I joined the Army in 1998 I got used to moving around a lot and making the best of the new places I've lived in. When I got out I made the easy transition back home for a year at my parents request to get myself together after the military and then moved to SoCal in August 2003.
It also helped that I was going to film school so I had somewhat of a cushion. Now that I've been in Los Angeles since Sept 2005 I've adjusted but the cost of living is making me reconsider. I've invested too much into LA so I'm in it to win right now.

There is no worse feeling than getting raped by life and with no one to turn to. Like screaming at the top of your lungs and no one listens. It's quite the shitty sensation. :bluu:

If the next president isn't Hillary nor Ron Paul, or if Ron completely destroys the US, I'm definitely moving out of the US. At this rate the US dollar will be worthless. I hope Ron can save us, but so many proposed changes make an unclear future.

Dude, whey the heck do you want to move to Vancouver?
I'm born and raised there, and it's HECKA hard to find a decent job that can pay the bills.
Sales tax is 13% there.
ALL of my friends (who have all graduated university with decent degrees) are all still living at home because housing prices are insane.
Almost all of my friends here in Cali (who have all graduated college with decent degrees) are mostly living at home.
But the thing is, you get taxed less in Cali, and general income is higher, and it's easier to find work. Oh, and the weather is great.
i want to move somewhere warm. fuck this snow shit. i wanna move to cali...so if i ever miss snow i can go up to the mountains and board.

Endless, if you don't mind me asking, what's your deal? I'm assuming you're a Canadian that's chilling in the States now? So did you get a job down there that provided a work visa? Otherwise I'm not sure how one would move out of the country...you'd have to like apply for immigration and all that, right?

everyone who is in college has the idea of re-locating. Going to greener pastures... me, i've though about it.. but now my idea is to (after i graduate) to work in the US for about 5 years, save enough money and develop a good reputation then move back here to the philippines.
The majority of my friends do plan to work out of the country. Well, i have lived in NJ before.. when the news about me moving to the P.I. came, i was exited and very happy. But when i moved here, it took me about 2 years to adjust. During my first two years in the P.I., i was very upset about leaving the States. Wishing that we never did move to the philippines. It was a huge pain knowing that the things i was used too and my closest friends are not around anymore. That's what people should think about when they plan to move to a different place. Do you think you'll miss your old lifestyle? Stuff like that. But now, i'm very happy were i am. So, i don' plan to re-locate to the states for good.

Why not? at some point in everyone life you probably get piss off and what to get away, just most of use never go through with it :looney:
Sometimes I think of hopping on a bus or a train and heading to some random place...Seattle, San Jose, Colorado, whatever, and just spending the day there. Just hang out, look around, see what's going on. And then head back.

Hey man,
I'll give a fellow Canadian my 2 cents. I used to live in Scarborough, ON ... moved to Calgary AB for a few months then moved back to Ontario where I am working in Sarnia.
When I moved to Calgary, the only people I knew in the city were the people who I went to university with. There was a strong core of 6-8 guys who I was pretty good friends with as we all lived in residence together and/or had the same classes together (engineering). It definatly helps when you have people you know in a new city, they can help you adjust, you can meet new people thru them, etc etc.
My reason for moving out west was primarily career oriented (it also didn't hurt to already have a buncha friends there and a FREE place to stay). I had just finished school with a chemical engineering degree, my summer contract was up with the company i was working for in toronto so i said to myself, what the hell, i might as well go out there and see what the who oil+gas boom is all about.
I also met a buncha SRK Calgary fools too who were all hella cool. Now that I think of it ... half of them were actually from NFLD  ... they also moved out west to jump aboard the oil+gas boom.
Of course before I went out there, I tried to gather information from my friends. They all said that Calgary was a great city, blah blah blah. (this was of course from the people who grew up there).
After living there for a bout 4 months, I realized that Calgary is a pos city and I would probably never want to live or even visit there again. I won't get into the details as hating on Calgary could be a thread in itself.
Anyways to summarize, I did not have a pleasant experience re-locating to Calgary. I am glad to be back in ON now where I am alot closer to home where I can regularly see my family and friends.
Now some Q's for you:
- What are your motivations behind moving? Career? Family? Friends?
- Have you been to/visited the part of Miami where you want to live?
- Just curious, where in Toronto do you currently live?
Peace. Hope this helps.

Came down to visit, got an interview from a recruiter. Got the job on the spot. Flew back to Vancouver the next day, and moved to Cali the next week.
The work visa I'm on is quite easy to get, it's renewed every year and costs $50USD. All you need is a university degree AND your job needs to be on some sorta NAFTA list AND you need a letter from your workplace.
No need for immigration, you're just on a work visa.
However, for all of this working out so insanely smoothly, I was EXTREMELY lucky/thankful.

I've been moving all my life, so my perspective is probably a bit skewed. Country shifts are a major shift, even if it's just crossing the border. Canada/US culture shock isn't bad at all, but there's still a significant shift. I found the moves refreshing, but you will always regret the life you left behind. You just have to make sure the positives outweigh the negatives. Of course, this is all pretty obvious, but sometimes it helps just to have someone state it.

wow it became a political thread out of nowhere for a brief moment.
I dont know ive placed consideration ever since my sis graduated from college with a B.S. in industrial engineering working at Boeing in the seattle area. SHe is doing fine and also since my uncle formerly lived there he had a couple of buddies that made the transition a bit easier. I did had interests in memphis, dallas, pleasanton (work related), maybe atlanta (but that is such a black man cop out city to run to imo).
Now since im doing the RE im open for any opportunity in CRE to make big bucks in whatever city as long as the minority population is pretty strong.

I'm done with the US. I really don't feel any attachment to it, and living for so long without worrying about high/violent crime rates, returning won't be an easy transition. My main goal right now is to find civilian work in another country and establish residence there (it definitely doesn't have to be Japan but I have a bit of a foundation here). Hopefully I can get that ironed out in the next couple years.

I heard Calgary is mad racist and full of elitist pricks? It that true?
A friend of mine recently got a job there and said he loved it. He also said there were some opportunities for people with my educational background (bitotech/microbiology). So I'm looking to see how the move would fair me.
I've never been to miami myself but some friends who've been there say it's nice. I don't think I want to live there forever, maybe for about 2-3 years.

Right now... lots of my friends are not really my friends. Like I have a few people that I can trust, that's it, but they all go to college far away and I dont get to see them much. Im being fucked over at the whim of college faculty at the college of my dream (which I got accepted to) and this is the second time I've tried to actually get in a program and have been denied.
I would really love to relocate to chicago. I really loved it there during a week's visit a while back.

Miami is ass. Pick somewhere else.
A lot of people come here because of the South Beach hype, but once that fades, you find little else. You absolutely need a car, because public transportation is trash and you wait 30 minutes between buses. The weather is overrated, as rain is constant in the 'glorious' summer, and no, don't think its always hot, as it will drop to the 50s-60s during winter. The broads are not that much different than what you'll see in New York or California... people just overrate them because... hell, I have no idea why.
This is a great place to live for awhile or to escape to every now and then, but living here will totally ruin the notoriety for you.
Do I need to mention our sports teams suck, most of our local music artists suck, and there's always the small possibility a hurricane will turn your living room into a doghouse?
