I found this kind of interesting. What do you think SRK? Is this a good approach, going to far, or a nice thought that will ultimately fail?

Here is the original story.
http://wcbstv.com/local/pequannock.high.school.2.622734.html

PEQUANNOCK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) ― When it comes to keeping our teenagers safe and sober, one New Jersey school district is taking the lead by employing the use of a Breathalyzer test.

And as CBS 2 HD found out, it's become such a successful deterrent, students are passing with flying colors.

Keeping high school students sober can be, in some situations, a full time job.

"I personally got Breathalyzed," said student Jessica Forrest.

At Pequannock High School.

Getting checked for alcohol is now the rule at dances and other social events.

"I'm all for it because if your child isn't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide," parent Barbara Fede said.

Pequannock School District superintendent Dr. Larrie Reynolds said some students' recent behavior left the district no choice.

"It actually came to a head when last year at the graduation senior trip, that we had students who actually couldn't graduate as a result of their drinking," school board member Dr. Larrie Reynolds said.

Pequannock also has an active Breathalyzer test, similar to what would be used during a police traffic stop. It's a little more intrusive, but administrators believe it sends a clear message about their zero-tolerance policy on alcohol abuse.

So far it has worked, and now other districts are following Pequannock's lead.

In fact, Southington High School in Connecticut expanded the program for daily use when a student is suspected of drinking.

"In the world of high school students, any alcohol rating is a reading that is inappropriate," Superintendent Joseph Mirardi said.

Pequannock school officials say because their limited Breathalyzer use has been so effective, they aren't willing to take the program that far just yet.

"We'll leave that for somebody else to decide," Reynolds said. "We're really not going into that area."

However frequently it's used.

"I don't think people will like, drink anymore," Pequannock student Erika Vecchiet said.

It seems the Breathalyzer has at least cleared the air about who is -- and who is not -- welcome at school.

Pequannock school officials say they avoided running into any privacy issues by making students sign a contract which states they must submit to a Breathalyzer if they want to attend a school social event.

I think it's a good idea. HS kids want to do grown people things they should be ready to face adult procedures. Just like one of the parents in the article said, if you're not doing anything wrong you shouldn't have nothing to hide.

Yeah, I don't really see any problem with this. You go to school to learn and grow up to (hopefully) be normal adults. That means no drugs, no alcohol, and no guns. Fuck 'em and if they have to they can do it on their own time.

I'd like to believe that the motive behind such an action is for the sake of raising the children, but it's probably more that the school doesn't want to get sued by some idiot parent who's kid got smashed and then wrapped their car around a tree.

Good idea and all that jazz... but couldn't they find a non-stereotypical valley girl to fucking interview so they didn't get quotes like this?

Seriously!? In Jersey?

Wow...that is surprising. I graduated from CA. I was pissed drunk during prom, fucked a girl during homecoming in the teachers lounge, pissed on a chair because of a dare during one of the other dances.

No one said shit. Though that was Cali in the mid-90's. It has changed now.....oh wait it hasn't; there was a race riot at my old school right before Christmas.

Just for note: I do not endorse my actions of my youth.............for the most part.

sorry to you people who enjoy doing this, but, i'm not to fond of not being in control of myself.

I don't see any reason this is a bad idea...but what does that say about the current generation of teenagers when school officials are forced to do this?

First you have day care centers in high schools(one of the schools here in Savannah has one for the students), and now you need breathalyzers? I'm looking forward to what the teenagers will be getting into in the '18.:bluu:

SOMEHOW SOMEWAY everyone will get around it eventually.

It's a good idea but no more alchy at school dances FTL:tdown:

I only graudated hs 2 years ago but it's sad to see that schools are (have been?) so bad now that they have to implement measures jsut to keep students sober DURING class.

Haha Cali mid-90s reminds of how they portrayed typical posh-dude high school kids in movies like Uncle Buck or the capoeira movie Only the Strong. Like uni-sided haircuts, throwing paper planes in class, and tying red and black plaid sweaters around your waste. I can kinna imagine how itd be different

Those functions will mysteriously have a noticable lack or reduced attendance of caucasian kids. "Reverse" racism and discrimination cries will abound.

where in jersey did you go to school that they banned grinding? private school maybe, but in public schools there'd be jean scuffs on the wall from dances.

Somehow, I have a hard time believing that student drinking is that much worse than it was before they felt the need to implement this procedure.
