My credit was jacked when I got my clearance. It's not bad credit that stops you as much as it is total debt ratio. If your credit is bad from previous debt that you've cleared up, you're okay. Otherwise, they make you fill out a form and sign it saying when your debt will be clear. They're supposed to come around and check at that date, but they never do because they're always overbooked (if this is for a government clearance). My credit is clean now, but my "check up date" was in 2003. I haven't seen or heard from them since 2001. They're really looking for people who are in so much debt they're about to lose their houses, cars, etc. They're looking for people whose debt is so bad it would give them incentive to sell secret information.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
My credit is in the "bad" state, my free report shows four negative accounts. Two have been closed out and one of them has been in the debt collecting phase for a while. I've talked with the debt collectors throughout my later college years speaking the truth, all my money from my $8 an hour job is going to expenses and other more urgent bills. The other bad accounts I have no idea about and am going to dispute them. I really want to pay off this crap debt and I finally got the job to do it, but I don't want to lose my job because of the debt.
I'm going for the Secret Clearance and I have a clean criminal record (one arrest that was expunged), no bankruptcy, no drug use (seriously I stay away from all that crap), speeding tickets but no DUI and I'm probably missing some other things.
I also just talked to my supervisor about it and he says as long as I show an effort to pay my debts I should be fine. I feel better now after reading these responses, thanks again guys:angel:
