Nah you are right. They all go crazy. It may have something to do with trying to impose order on a random system. I'm not quite sure that is entirely true though since so much of chess is memorization, and I don't really know if there are too many different branches among top players, but I'm not a chess afficiando I guess (I just put it on my resume, heh heh!) so maybe someone else has a better theory. I do know that a lot of them do go crazy however.

Loved that movie. Especially when the underdog gives the reigning champ a "gg" handshake.

Hope he and Dick Schaap are fighting it out right now in a big octagon in the sky.

Never knew he went wacko, but can be expected with how mentally stressful high level chess is, but I doubt that was the only problem.

There is more than one way to judge a person. Bobby Fischer, if judged in terms of Chess ability, is nothing short of a God. This is a guy who found the opening game so boring (because of all the over-analysis of lines) that he invented a new form of Chess to sidestep the entire body of research into openings (it's called Fischer Random Chess and there are still high-level tournaments dedicated to it today).
One cannot overlook his skill as a player. He was an individualistic American who took on the Soviet Chess machine and beat it, exemplifying something very profound about the cold war conflict between the two nations. When it comes to Chess, this man Is Legend.
But as a human being? It is clear he was deeply flawed. At one point in his life, he despairingly confided in a friend "Chess... this game is all I know" and one can't help but think whether his early fame played some part in his twisted personality.
People can say he was an anti-semitic nazi but at the end of the day I believe he was a self-hating Jew. And probably had a form of aspergers too (see the ridiculous list of demands he'd make on organisers in tournaments).
But my opinion? Well, hell, I couldnt give a shit about Bobby Fischer's personality. See, I'm a chess guy, I love the game and am at least part-fluent in understanding the language of what occurs over the board. And so when I replay the great Bobby Fischer games and marvel at the tactical and strategic elegance on display, I am not admiring the tenets of National Socialism: I'm simply enjoying the fruits of an extraordinary Chess mind.
RIP Bobby Fischer

Rubbish. Chess is not inherently random, it is all about order.
I doubt a higher proportion of chess players "go crazy" than in the general populace, but if you know of a study that proves differently feel free to cite.

RIP Bobby Fischer, always feld respect for the player, yet confusion for his character. There are quite a few great chess masters in history that were mentally unstable.

I remember when he lit into Jeremy Schaap and his dad calling them every hateful jew name the man could get the strength to utter. I thought it was kinda sad how Dick Schaap tried to reach out to him, but Bobby wasn't having any of that.
But regardless, dude was a beast at what he did. And I can't hate on that.

Bah. Crazy old racist bigot who publicly laughed and congratulated that America was attacked in 9/11. Chess genius, but a terrible fucking human.

I read the news from this link. (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/77104/(Update)-World-chess-champion-Bobby-Fischer-dies)
Yeah, I remember that, on 9/12, he was on the local AM radio (in Cebu) and he was all
"it's time to finish the US!" which surprised a lot of people. The problems he had in Japan were detailed in the Sports section a couple of years ago too.
Nuts.
I suck at chess, sadly. Randomly generated pieces as described in the version he was promoting sounds fun though.
