My sister is only in her sophomore year of HS and has already gotten offers to visit ivy league universities and stanford has offered her a full scholarship? She plays sports, but isn't locally recognized so national recognition is out of the question. Academics is the only thing I could think of, but I personally wasn't in this situation and I don't know anyone else that has been in a situation like this.
Has anyone here been in this situation?

Academics, SAT(minorly), and extracurricular.
You can be so so in academics and SAT but if you're amazing in extracurricular you'll get a heads up

My grades were fine up to senior year, then I got a social life and my grades went to shit. Seriously, second semester of my senior year, it wasn't AP Lit, it wasn't AP Gov, it was pretty much Pokemon and bomb threat evacuations.
My SAT's were balls, I should've taken the ACT but I never got around to it.
I was about to go to the evergreen state college (apparently the east coast marvels at it).. but I wasn't "hip" or "greener" enough to be in programs like "Knowing Nature," "Advanced Puppetry," or "Cockshining 101."
Now Im gonna go to a community college in seattle so I can transfer into UW sometime. Because there is no way in hell I could get into UW as of now with my academic standing.

Yea, the best way to get a school attention is either to be:
Academically Stellar, or a super athlete.
The SAT is important but if you the top of your class, and you were Mr./Mrs. extracurricular activities person you will get noticed quickly.
The athletic end speaks for itself. Plus it doesn't matter what athletics. Until I busted my knee I was being scouted to play Water Polo by a couple schools. So, even though the big sports get the media's attention almost all sports are pretty much are good.

Academics and Extra Curricular stuff(Service Learning Hours,JROTC,Athletics,Debate,etc...).
ACT and SAT is important, but what do you think tells more about a person. How somebody did taking a test for 6 hours on a Saturday morning or how they did for 4 years in High school?
If your grades haven't been up to par,it's good to write a personal essay to the University to let them know why, otherwise it's a judgment call as to whether you get in or not

SATs are important for a good school.
Race is more important.
Black=In.
Don't even tell yourself otherwise.

Quick aside, how does one get a knee injury playing Water Polo........
yeah as long as you do your homework and aren't mentally handicapped you can get into a decent school, it's not as if High School is hard or matters much for that matter......
I graduated High School with a 2.7 gpa but I scored a 27 on my ACT with out any prep work. I never went to a state school(went to Full Sail in Orlando) and make 50k a year starting........
My high school grades or ACT score were never brought up

if she's a sophomore she probably took PSAT i assume, in which case she might've qualified as a national merit scholar or some shit which would explain how/why colleges are contacting her. i mean i know people that got into college soph/jr. year and went to college instead of their senior year of hs so it's not unheard of and i think only ivy and top tier schools do that sort of thing.

I got into Wentworth with a 1370 on SAT's (first try :P) and a 2.9/3.0. But I went to a private high school.
My extra curriculars were nothing special either.

as part of the puzzle, yeah. but just like a lot of things, the process is pretty subjective beyond a point. there's some arbitrary threshold above which intangibles matter more than marginal point increases.

I got into Temple ( they were going to give me a tiny scholarship too, but it was only like 1000, and I didn't get it because I didn't go there my first semester ) and I think Saint Joseph's was going to send me a scholarship and I had a non retarded but non spectacular SAT of 1190.
I am mathematically retarded.
It doesn't matter anymore anyway because I dropped out and am probably going to the art school by my house next winter.
Temple isn't really all that amazing of a school anyway. Everyone who goes to Temple just got rejected/was too poor for Villanova and Penn.

I'm not doubting u jie but i find it hella hard to believe u didn't have at least a few good private schools offer u full rides with those grades.
On my first try i got 1360 on SAT (2100 my second time i was the first class to take new SAT),
3 on ap calc ab, 4 on ap lit, 4 on ap gov, 3 on ap biochem
extracurriculars: moot court club, youth court, deca officer, played basketball, football, track and i still got offers from s.u.n.y schools and i might have a shot at columbia though the fact that my parents n relatives went there might have helped as well so if i can get into a decent private school you should have recruiters phone-stalking you.
IMO academics is not everything but it counts for alot i'm glad my friends told me early on how helpful joining after school clubs are and if ur already in college and want to transfer to a better school then SAT's and highschool grades mean absolute shit ur judged solely on ur grades at ur current school.

UW is utter bull shit they rejected me and my homie with a half ass SAT score and a 3.0 gpa got in. Apparently he had a really good essay.

1400 on the SAT.
Over a 5.0 weighted GPA.
Half-white, Half-hispanic and registered as "Hispanic".
Didn't do shit on extracurricular other than some community service I had to perform due to suspensions
+Got tons of offers from minority scholarships
+National Merit Scholar
+Presidential Award
+Letter of congratualations from Sen. John Edwards
+Offer from Columbia
+Offer from Duke
+Offer from Harvard
-Ignored all of it
-Fought people, caused destruction, etc.
-Finally got arrested and expelled from the school system for the last time
-Ended up having to go to Community College
So in the end, as long as you're a minority--non-white (or non-Asian if you're going to a tech school)--if you're not a retard and have a good SAT then you'll be fine. Just don't fuck up your chances like I did.

Actually kind of easily. Prior to 99 there was a lot of excercises giving to goalies that are now banned by the NCAA due to a high risk of knee injuries.
The one I did was tread water, while 5lb weights on my ankles and hold two big office bottles filled with pool water above my head till it drained. Plus, most serious goalies had to do it all in one set. So if I dropped any of the bottles (I am not talking about the little bottles but the big ones) I had to refill them with water again and start over.
It puts such a strain on your knees doing that, that even though your legs are rock solid your joints are tore up. So one game I popped out of the water hard as hell and pumped my legs to keep me up I heard a loud pop. Then my right leg gave out and I sank. I had no pain, but I knew I was over. Now my knee cap is off center and I would need serious knee surgery to get it back to normal. That was over a decade ago.
Plus I have injuries to my back, elbows, bone chips through half my body and arthritis all because of the beatings while I was in the pool. From people kicking me, punching me, or the ball getting through point blank at me from a foot away with all their strength.
Though I loved the sport and will do it again even though I knew the injuries would come. Not sure if that makes me stupid, brave, psychotic or a mixture of all three.

@fishje where'd you apply? i mean CMU's cs department is top tier like i got in bcuz i did a summer program there but didn't even consider going bcuz i knew i'd fail out or become a recluse.

a B average and non-shitty SATs pretty much guarantees you admission into college, how you pay for it is another thing but pretty much anybody with those stats can go to a university if they really want to.

lol academics in the states is so funny. As long as you're not retarded, you can go to university here. Surviving it is a whole other matter though.

Damn you offers to 3 great school and you didn't take it? community college is not bad. its like a second chance if you mess up in high school though its more competitive since everybody is trying to transfer to the good schools.

Yeah, but even if I went to Harvard I doubt I would've lasted very long. Still...I have the chance to live through it again I would have gone just for the experience.
My attitude from 16-18 years old was very immature and volatile despite my grades and I couldn't see myself living at Cambridge.
Nowadays I'm just slightly less immature and extremely lazy :xeye:
Besides, even with the university offers I still needed a way to pay for it.
Even amongst the best students, a full-ride scholarship is extremely rare.....unless you're a DAMN good basketball/football player.

Yeah, working hard with academics rarely pays off in college, but hopefully you can get into a through and have great job prospects when you graduate. My roomate in college was a football player and I never let him complain because he had it easy, even if he did have to work out all the time. This is what a football scholarship looks like:
1. Your rent/utility bills are paid
2. You get a spending account of a grand a month TO FUCKING EAT ON. A fucking grand....OF FOOD....PER MONTH.
3. You work out quite a bit. Yeah boo hoo.
4. College is FREE!!!!!
Unless you are absolutely exceptional, getting a academic scholarship is really hard, unless you go to a small private college, then its not so bad.
Oh yeah, and when the team won the Holiday bowl, the whole team got brand new Xboxes!!!

The college acceptance system is lame.
In high school I had:
6.5/6 GPA on a weighted scale
1300/1600 SAT (only took that BS 1 time)
4's and 5's on all my AP tests
Extracurriculars: Drum Major for 2 years, All-State Musician for two years, National Honor Society Officer, probably more I can't remeber...
Didn't really get into any spectacular schools, went to UT for a year, was lonely, came home and went to UH for a few years, spent those years trying to pick a major/working, and just recently got re-accepted back to UT to finish an Electrical Engineering degree.
Managed to grow up a bit in the process though. I realized I don't need a bunch of fake ass friends around me in order to be happy. Gonna room with an old friend who graduated/has a real job and work towards making some real money after I finish school.
