This topic came up at another forum I'm on: (http://www.freaksafari.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2960)My friend just told me an interesting story. Last year in Vegas one of his friends lost $4,500/$5,000 he took to gamble. He was pissed and went and placed his last $500 on the Patriots to go 19-0 and win the Superbowl. The odds were 12,000 to 1. The casino called him last night and offered him $2 million to buy out his bet.

He is very conflicted. Before the casino called he figured if they lose, he lost $500. Now if they lose he loses $2 million.I want to know what SRKGD thinks about this. What would you do in this guy's situation? Take the guaranteed $2,000,000 and walk away, or hold out for the $6,000,000 and risk getting nothing?

$500 on 12,000 to 1 is $6 million (I think). $2 million sounds good though, so I might end up taking that instead of trying to be greedy.

But the way it sounds, the guy likes to gamble and would probably blow it all in Vegas.

That casino must be shitting its pants enough to make him an offer.

Theoretically, since there is no way this is real:

The obvious answer, of course, is to take the 2 million dollars and laugh your way to the bank.

The less obvious answer is that the Patriots are favored to win the SuperBowl by 12 points. They are probably going to win. A real gambler would let it ride for the $6 million, knowing that they're really only risking the $500 they put down, and the fact that the bet is in their favor.

Million
02-01-2008, 06:59 PM
I'll always take the guarantee, especially if that guarantee is 2 million dollars. It's not even a tough question at all for me, probably because I've never had a gambling "problem". Really, you'd have to have a hardcore gambling addiction to turn down a guaranteed 2 mil on the chance of 6 mil, even if that's a very good chance.

Three words: Take money. Run.

However, he should respond to his offer with one of his own, at approximately 5M and make sure he lets them know they can haggle from there. All goes well, he can probably come out with 3.5M.

The casino's shitting bricks at this point, and they wanna pay him a little so they don't lose alot. From what I read in the other forum, he's looking at an EV of 4.8M, so if he takes 3½M, the casino comes out ahead (saving 1.3M), and he makes out better (up 1.5).

If they refuse, and keep it at 2M, final offer, still take it. Invest most of it, and take a little to have fun with. In the right places, he can add quite a bit to his yearly income.

You guys are whack fuck the 2million

You should of ask this questions in the NFL THREAD! its 1 GAME so that mean you he has a 50% possibility of winning 6million which is TRIPLE the amount the casino is offering. They didn't hire stupid people to give you good deals I mean it was a sucker bet the odds were 1/12,000 but he got lucky and you might as well take full advantage of it.

Now on to the football side the Patriots are 18-0... that mean they are UNDEFEATED! how the hell do you bet against a team that is undefeated and beat the Giants already this year. Its 1 game it not 19 more game that the Patriots have to win. The Giants are currently a 11 1/2 point underdog. If the casino wasn't scared shit less they wouldn't have offer this deal to your friend.

I would only take the guarantee money if it four million or more.

However I am a football fan so I would go for it all regardless.

AcryiLLic

That said, it's still a one in five chance of taking home dick squat when he could have $2 million as an absolutely 100% guarantee. Hence the dilemma.

That's the kind of security a lot of Americans don't ever have the luxury of. Yes, it's hardly the windfall of $4+ million, but I'd rather be guaranteed a lifetime safety net than chance losing it all on what is essentially extra money to burn.

As they say, don't get greedy. You're being handed two million bucks, free. Yeah, you might kick yourself if you find out you could have had the six, but not nearly as much as you would if you let it ride and end up with nothing.

And I don't gamble at all except for the occasional 20 dollar buy in poker game, a scratch off here and there, and a lottery ticket once in a blue moon. You can't live off that 2 mil. All that's gonna change is you're gonna be able to buy a few more toys than you used to be able to. outside of nj you can get a non-"shit hole house in a crime ridden area" for around 200k.

but yeah, i'd take the $2 million, only bcuz it's such a huge amount of money. if the amount of money wasn't particularly important to me though i'd go for the $6 million bcuz these patriots are gonna win against these giants 80-90% of the time, if not more in my opinion, so the casino is counterfeiting me about $2.5 mil with that offer; i need like $4.5 mil to make it worth it.

and as far as $2 million not being worth anything...you can easily find some account that will give 4-5% interest and just live off of that cool $100k/year like most americans...the difference being that you also have $2 million extra just sitting in the bank.

Here in Tx, a 200k house is a really nice house. You can get a old home for ~ 80k and new homes start at around 90k at the soon-to-be-a-ghetto level and get rather nice at the 120 - 150k range. Also, a lot of drilling companies are leasing the mineral rights from property owners out here. My father's probably going to be getting ~ 1000$ a month for at least 5 years and 25% of the oil profits if they find anything. I've heard of some people getting as much as 2800$ a month for their mineral rights. I love Texas. Too bad the Pats lost.

There's no conflict of interest at all. I'd take the $2 mil hands down, I'd have been on the road from LA to Vegas in a heartbeart after they called. Worrying about $2 mil-$6 mil is stupid and greedy because you're guaranteed $2 mil just to have your bet bought out and probably don't even have $2 left in your bank account.
