So, with several episodes already aired (and archives on NBC's site), I'd like to give everyone a place to express their opinions on the revival of this series.
I'm liking things so far, mostly. Let me break it down.
Props:
+ The Hulkster as a host. He shows how cool he actually is outside of the wrestling ring.
+ Ms. Ali is good herself, though she seems a bit less comfortable in her position.
+ New events. They seem to fit well alongside the classics.
+ Referee rulings after controversial plays. Good to see the contenders get a fair shake.
+ New Eliminator. This thing is absolutely VICIOUS.
+ Favorite Gladiators. Both of my choices are based on overall performance, and weighted heavily towards sportsmanship, though attitude and ability count as well.
++ Male: Titan. The Powerball incident early on made me like him alot, and after he gave major props to his Joust opponent, that cemented it. He made it all about the contender in both cases, and he's earned my respect.
++ Female: Fury. I loved her little pre-match taunt where she did the Matrix finger gesture, and she's quick to congratulate contenders that defeat her.
Slops:
- Hulkster as host. Come on, brother. I know you have 30 years of your wrestling persona ingrained into your head, brother, but seriously, brother, do you have to constantly overuse the word 'brother', brother?
- Crappy Editing. This is Gladiators, not Deal or Millionaire. Quit it with the "Contenders, ready?! Gladiators ready?! *Tweet!* *cut to commercial*" bullshit. The original did much better in this regard. Of course, it's also prime time vs. Saturday afternoons, too.
- Rulings come rather late, considering the flagrancy of the violations that led to them. The ref should be there right after the event and let 'em know what the audience sees immediately. Don't wait until their next event to speak up, unless the filming isn't how we see it when it's aired.
- Most Disliked Gladiators. Again, same criteria, but these are the ones that either don't cut it physically, or shit talk way too much and have no sportsmanship.
-- Male: Wolf and Mayhem (tie). Mayhem was the epitome of the sore loser after he DQed himself against both contenders in Joust and pushed the second off the platform in frustration. Wolf also just grates and has already let a contender get under his skin. He's supposed to be a professional.
-- Female: Hellga. She just... somehow seems to not do well in the physical events, and seems to have more talk than act. Not liking that.
Best post-match antics: After Molinar drew Mayhem's first DQ in Joust, he turned the pugle stick into a stick horse and just clowned the gladiator. Maybe that's why he was so pissed off.
Share your thoughts and opinions. That's what this is here for.
