I think the contributions of Black Americans should be integrated into American history and not just civil rights this or black inventor that.

Black history month is taught wrong anyways. Every year you watch either Glory or Amistad. A teacher talks about Madame CJ Walker inventing a straight comb instead of questioning the use of one when she will be considered a niggerbitch no matter what. Then the education somewhat ends with MLK getting merked. No embrace of hip-hop, black colleges, or Spike Lee.

Growing up I have noticed a real big division in the black community. Those who embrace Africa as the orgin and those who try to pretend black people came out the ground or something. I think the culture as a whole would probably benefit if there was an Africa history month...but In America it is a stretch.

you don't find anything about black ppl in other parts of the world. i've always thought that this is one of the main reasons black ppl don't know who they are. we don't accept our own ppl and have little knowledge if any of the fact that black ppl worldwide go through the same struggles we go here (and in some cases, many more).

I think, in all honesty, that Black history month actually has a negative impact. For the blacks, it gets them depressed reminding them of slavery and makes them hate the white man more. For the white men, it probably reminds them that blacks enslaved blacks and makes them treat blacks with less respect.

It happened to me in 8th grade. I wasn't really a model student I did well enough to scrape by but one year I totally killed it and got like a 3.4 GPA. So honor roll status. Anyway they inform me that I'd be taking part in this "African American Honor Roll Day" thing.

I didn't really get the point of it, I mean the Asian Kids and the White kids who got on the honor roll got some recognition but it was usually just some kind of honorable mention or your name at the top of a ranking list ( which only happened once, Parents went nuts when they found out about that )..but not us..WE got a FREAKIN PARADE! It was an excuse to get out of school that day so I was glad to have it...but once I hit college and looked back on that I realize how much of a circus that really was..and a slap in the face. It was like them sayin "Here you go dumbass, you actually did something right for once and we had you pegged as a total loser!".

I remember thinking to myself when I was 19: "Is this the standard we set ourselves to? We really have to have a parade for this? Is it our of pride, or is it shock?" It's nice that we support and congratulate ourselves for a job well done...but this was just overkill. I think the people who put it on realized that to cause I haven't seen them doing it in recent years.

Someone mentioned something about Obama becoming the first black president and while that black part of me gets really enthused by such an idea, I would rather have a really good president or vice president that does the job right for four years straight. I'd rather tell my kids I voted for the president that ended a drawn out war in the middle east, reformed health care, and protected the internet, than to tell them I voted black.

I'm not saying Obama is bad but you gotta have your priorities in order. Plus, touting the fact that Obama is black (and even then isn't he only half black- ya know, a halfrican.) and being apart of that 'black history' keeps things separated.

The afroamerican situation is actually really weird, when you think about it. If someone says; "I'm from Netherlands, we used to be Dutch and sail and shit and we have a history of sailing a fuckload." or "We're russians! Motherland! We had tzars and revolution and communism!" in Russia or "Our name is China for we are many. We put the FU back to kung-fu." These are groups of ethnicity+country+history. They are "people".

I consider myself American FIRST. Then I'm black. I'm so black I object to being called 'African American'. I am NOT African...I've never been to Africa and I have half a clue about the cultures over there. My people (blacks in the new world) have been removed from Africa for centuries. We are nothing BUT American because what culture was there before was purposefully erased. So I hate it when 'African' comes before 'American' in my 'official societal grouping'.
