View Full Version : Case sizes?

I am sitting here with graph paper and a pencil and for the love of me I can't figure out what general dimensions I want on my stick. This is my first stick and I have no reference at all about length/width/height.
Is this like a secret or something? I don't really see many threads out there that talk about it and found dimensions only for those wacky looking sticks. I want the normal square wooden frame + control panel/artwork/lexan in center but I just can't figure out proper dimensions. Can anyone help out?
Oh and I keep forgetting to add (just in case I piss somebody off) that the search function for this site doesn't work for me and I'm certain that if I could search, I would have found some.

well the inside of the case needs to be at least 8x10(for your buttons stick anc pcb) and the outside can be a good 9x12. when i made my case the inside was 8x11 making the outside 9x12 with 1/2" boards for the entire case. people normally just go with some similar sizing.

my current box is 8x10 inside with 3/4inch walls. shouldn't be hard to figure out the size.
my next box is 11x10 outside with 3/4 walls.
it's all a matter of preference really in what size you can fit stick and buttons too standard measurements. of course if you even WANT to use standard measurements. if you don't then you can cram the stick and buttons closer together.

That actually really helped. I liked though how you two use different thickness for the wood because I was meaning to ask what worked, 1/2 or 3/4 but it seems that both work.
What about height? It seems that 4'' is more then enough but do people slant? What is considered too high to put on your lap?

A image is 8.5" X 11" on panel control. The case box is 10" X 12.5" will fit a picture on panel control. wood playwood 3/4 is very strong than 1/2 .
Why case is 4" inch height for use there Happ joystick. If you pefer Japan stick the case 2.5" inch height.
Happ Joystick need 3/4 wood is standard america.

depending on the parts i use it will either be 2.5 for sanwa( it can be smaller 2" minimum i think) and 3" for happ
opips that was random...

Seriously? 2.5'' on Sanwa? Damn... thats really small. I think I'd feel comfortable in the 3'' range though...
Wow though, I really appreciate this info mates.

i used 3" 3/4 pine maple . a 1/2" slant from back to front is the usual norm.
for happed i think i used 3.5" height.
i think if you can pull it off, 1.76" is the clearance for sanwa height. i haven't tried this though.
i mount on 1/2" plywood. i don't know if it's standard or not but i guess whatever feels sturdy to you.

Oh boy Pixel, that reminds me of more questions I had intended to ask.
What range are we trying for the mount? And I was thinking something simple like MDF. And then apparently anything 1/4'' or a bit less is perfect for Laxen and snap-in Sanwas?

u have about 8mm to work with on sanwa screw ins and snap ins are super small. the best thing to do for those is make them snap into your plexi.

could be wrong, but im pretty sure if the height of the case is much lower than 2.5" then you need to cut out a hole on the bottom to give room for clearance.
For sanwa jlf that is

ok for my seimitsu buttons (now my current fave fyi) i used nothing more than the optik plastic to mount them. this is not plexi and this is not lexan; it chips like you wouldn't beleive but it's very sturdy (had to use a 40 toothed blade to cut it and then only feeding it super slow) it's also 0.220 thick so just under 1/4".
the way i mounted was to cut a big rectangle hole with enough clearance for the buttons into the plywood; it's dirty but it works.
also, the optik plastic i got at lowes for like $15 for a big square, i think it was 3x3' or a bit bigger. to much $$$ imo so i have to find something better :p.
another good way to mount is to cut a hole like i did in the plywood (or mdf) and then cut a small recess and then mount a 1/8" piece of metal with your holes cutout. for metal mounting snapins are ideal. i prefer screwins just because it's easier for me to remove them; cutting the metal is another thing all together - but i got a cousin who works in a/c fabrication and is going to start cutting me some metal mounting plates for various button templates.

If you have a Happ joystick, you want the stick to be heavy and balanced enough so that when you press down the case does not come up. This is why the full size MAS is so much better than the MAS mini.
