So I searched and didn't find a thread on this game. Anyone like these games?

I've been playing AoD for around 16 hours now and am enjoying it. But boy is it extensive, I'm getting hella lost on what I should be concentrating on. Anyone got any advice? There's just far too many characters, far too many items and far too much leveling to think about let alone clearing the next stage. I'm on to Chapter 7 I think now, what I'm finding hard is that I have to level most of my characters up to a higher standard to clear some stages and that's taking much more time than it should, simply because there's so much stuff.

Just starting the psp version. I like it. It is funnier than Lapucelle. I am yet to finish that game, it just takes to long to get to the point.

Yeah same, I really like it. It's the first game I think I've seen where absolutely everything can level up to beyond rediculous levels. It just compels me to play the game. It gets harder later on though, especially if you make too many characters. I think it's best to keep it a bit limited earlier on because as far as I can tell, it's later on in the game you want to have more characters as it will be far easier and quicker to level them up. One character you do want though is a Scout, his long range (Gun) and Geo change technique come in very handy, especially in the Item World.

I've been writing up a pseudo guide to Disgaea: HOD, i''l post it up here in a few hours when I've completed a bit more, hold tight.

wow...disgaea is the shit!

um... for disgaea 1, just level up your prereqs so you can get a majin...all you need really. there was a guy on gamefaqs who posted screens of his level 9999 majin with a maxed out yoshitsuna and 3 maxed out SRS, all with the same rarity

this game is too serious

i always prefered ronins because they looked cooler.

in disgaea 2, ninjas are good for item world because of their double evade rate when they have weights equiped.

disgaea 3 is out in japan.i hope it gets a stateside release.

From what I can remember about disgaea 1, the best map for early leveling is one with either a bunch of succubus or cat girls with invincibilty panels. Fuse them together to as high as you can currently handle and beat up on them until i think around 100 or 200. Then one of the cave of ordeals has 9 dudes in a 3x3 square which you will want to take advantage of, so teaching characters how to use a sword will be great for this, I can't recall if any other classes in D1 had a 3x3 attack.

Disgaea 3 needs to get localized faster, summer is too far away. MGS4... that can wait, D3 is what I am most looking forward too for PS3.

The first one was a great gaming experience.

But 2 felt like just more of the same, but without any likable characters. It seems like 3 could be following a similar path, but I'll wait 'till it's released to judge it.

Okay the basic stuff is done, I'll probably just do the complicated aspects later rather than cover every single little detail. Hope it's of use to you guys, here ya go:

Stats-

Atk: Determines how much damage you cause using physical attacks.
Def: Determines how much damage you receive from physical attacks.
Int: Determines how much damage you cause using magic attacks.
Res: Determines how much damage you receive from magic attacks.
Hit: Determines your chance to hit an enemy using physical attacks.
Spd: Determines an enemy's chance to hit you using physical attacks.
HP: How much damage your unit can take before being KO'ed.
SP: Magic and special skills requires SP to use. This is a measure of how much SP your unit has.
Counter: How many counter attacks a unit can perform.
Jump: Determines what height a unit can reach while moving.

Battle system-

Controls:

X: Select command, highlight unit
Square: See highlighted unit stats, equipment, skills (aka status window)
O: Cancel command, return unit to original position
Triangle: Rotate area of effect for magic/special attacks
L: Rotate view left
L+Square: Rotate view right
R: Zoom in/out
R+square: Cycle through unit list, base panel, exit panel

Team attacks: If your units are standing next to each (diagonals don't count) other then you have a chance of performing a team attack. The chance for each unit to join in on the team attack is shown in the top left as a percentage. Units using the same weapon, and units who are master/pupils of each other have a higher chance to perform team attacks. The most untis who can particapte in a team attack is four. Only normal physical attacks work in team attacks, no magic, special or long range with gun/bow/spears.
Once the team attack is completed, the units who participated can cancel their actions to return to their previous position, apart form the unit which started the team attack. eg Laharl is surrounded by Etna, and two prinnies as shown on the diagram:

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/2955/diagram1ja2.jpg

You select “attack” with Laharl and if your lucky they all attack and to a 4 hit combo on the enemy. Once it's done, highlight etna and press O to cancel the action. Etna will go back to where she was standing before you moved her. Do the same with the prinnies. Now they can choose their own targets and attack them. Order of attack is very important in disgaea, think about who attacks first.

Combo damage: If your units all attack the same enemy (you can use team attacks in conjunction with this), then after the first hit, you get a damage multiplier for each hit that connects, and your units will do more damage than if they attacked separately. You must position your units and select their targets before choosing “execute”, so it requires good planning. Refer to the diagram:

http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/4521/diagram2cb5.jpg

Laharl starts and gets a team attack with 5,6, and Etna. Then 2 attacks and gets a team attack with 6, 3 gets a TA with 5, 4 attacks by himself and finally Etna attacks. You have effectively got two attacks from everyone apart form laharl, and each hit has done more damage than if they attacked separately. You need long range weapons to make the most of combo damage, so units behind allies and units standing diagonal to enemies can get hits on an surrounded enemy. In the above diagram 5 and 6 need a long range weapon to hit the enemy. you could have even had long ranged units next to and behind 2, 3, and 4 to cause insane damage as well as additional team attacks! Forward planning and position is key to high combo damage.

Magic: Each unit has elemental affinities ie they take less damage from a particular element, and more from another. There are 3 elements fire, ice, wind. Each enemy's affinity is shown in the bottom right corner when you highlight them like so:

Fire 50%
Ice 0%
Wind -50%

This means that this unit will take 50% LESS damage from fire magic, normal damage from ice magic, and 50% MORE from wind magic. Always remember the minus sign means MORE damage from that element not less.

Once you have select which magic you want to cast, you pick your target. It can be an empty square ONLY if it is an AOE (area of effect) spell and an enemy is in range of the AOE. The squares that will be hit are shown in blue. You can rotate the AOE of some magic using the triangle button.

Special attacks: Many special attacks will move the unit performing them to another square during the attack and/or upon completion. The intermediate/ending square is shown in yellow and must be empty otherwise you cannot perform the attack.

Counter attacks:
When a unit is hit with an close-range physical attack, there is an chance the unit being hit will counter attack and hit the attacking unit. Each class has a different chance to counter a hit. You can even counter attack a counter attack! The maximum amount of counter attacks that can be triggered for a unit is shown by the “counter” stat in the status window of each unit.

Let me know if item world, transmigration guides etc. will be of use.

Thanks for mentioning this. I am now looking for details but nothing useful seems to be known. I hope it is all new and not just a scaled down port.

this better not be disgaea 1 again, since afternoon of darkness is already the best possible disgaea 1.

Yes!

I personally love the whole Makai series Nippin Ichi has put out, so this is great news to me. I just hope it's not Disgaea 1 all over again (but even if it is I'll still buy it).

I've never played it before, but I've heard that it's like final fantasy tactics, but a lot better...

Is it really that good?

Better than FFT?

Mm, not really imo.

But still quite good.

FFT is a lot more challenging, and the story and characters are more engaging.

But Disgaea is a nice little game in itself, and the first in a series of increasingly redundant games.

You either like it or hate it really. Personally I like it better than FFT simply because I played Disgaea first. Final Fantasy Tactics is very restricted when it comes to actions in battle. If you move, you move and there's nothing you can do about it. You also have to play each character in a set order. With Disgaea it's very open as it allows you to play your characters at will, you can also cancel actions if you think-of-something-better/make-a-mistake. I'll probably play Tactics eventually, but not before I beat Disgaea, not before I beat BoFIV either!

So I'm up to the last stage in Chapter 6, how many characters should I be concentrating on at this point? I've been focusing mainly on Laharl, Mage, Cleric and Scout as I thought they were pretty essentail. I don't really want to bother with monsters at this point as they cost so much mana. I wanted a Dragon but after trying them they weren't even that good. Anyone you should suggest at this point? Main characters included...

Also any advice with a Theif?

Disgaea is a game you don't beat.. you just play forever. This happens to me so many times

"I'm gonna get everyone to level 650 and beat the game" In the process of getting them there. the first person is now at like 667 and its like "well 675 THEN I'll quit."

Disgaea 2's only problem is that the story/characters are lame compared to the prequel. Some funny moments, but nothing that made me  like in 1.

Adell needs to borrow Rozalin's gun and go shoot himself.

"Hit: Determines your chance to hit an enemy using physical attacks.
Spd: Determines an enemy's chance to hit you using physical attacks."

Are you sure about this? Because I always thought SPD was how far you could move...
