Death over $5 and stopping a criminal when you can just take down the license plate number of the car...

Sometimes you've just gotta choose your battles, and for $5 that's definitely one he should have given up on.

What really pisses me off is looking at the video footage screen caps, the two individuals involved look like two teenage yuppie fucks who did it for merely for kicks. I honestly hope they get caught and justice gets served.

This reminds me about this debate I once had with someone. He was adamant about being a hero no matter what, because that's what he believes in. If some guy tried to steal a video game with a gun, he would try and stop him. I don't mean to sound like an ass, but the guy was a stereotypical skinny nerd. And he 'actually' wears a pocket protector! This just made it all the more painful for me to hear him say that.

Why would you risk your life over a video game, for a company that doesn't care about you, and would lose virtually nothing over the loss of one game? Because that's his beliefs... ug

Life is not like an action movie, where the good guys magically avoid fatal bullet wounds.

I don't think this guy knew how much money was in that tip jar...

Regardless, no I wouldn't risk my life for someone else's money.

If I saw some dude mugging/raping someone in an alleyway and I was sure I could take him (And had my knife on me) I'd step in and stop his ass, but I wouldn't ever risk my life for some money unless I'm sure I'd be able to walk away with a substantial amount of it, and it has to be in the millions range.

well the article sed it was the spur of the moment, if you had adrenaline pumped in you, in some cases you won't think right either. I guess, he wanted to make a civil arrest, so it was kinda his call to chase after the guy.

Looks like this is a job for-*thump*

Seriously though...leave the superhero stuff to the tough guys. Too bad it was a Starbucks....it were someplace else instead of a yuppie hangout, some black or spanish dude or somebody with street smarts coulda chased the kid instead...and caught him. Most yuppies have the right idea: don't get involved, cuz you're totally unsuited for it and you'll get hurt. This guy maybe thought he'd score some attention from a cute girl behind the counter he'd had feelings for for a while, or just plain forgot who he was...like Superman in one of the movies when he forgot he traded his powers to be with Lois, and got stomped in a roadside diner. I mean, come on: how do you get hit while at the driver's side door? No vehicle has tires the swivel 180 degrees for wicked-fast lateral movement or extremely tight turns, save maybe a forklift. At some point, our boy had to have flung himself into the path of the car or on the hood, betting the driver would stop.

This is quite an unfortunate story. I'd say he just got caught up in the moment. I mean, probably he didn't see "That guy just stole five omg stop him" but rather "That motherfucker just stole something I better help out!"

Truly a sad day for altruism.

Now a days with everyone having guns, I'd be wary to come to someone's aid. I'd certainly go get help, or call the cops, but I don't take well to being shot at.

That guy is full of shit.

It was been shown time and time again that the people who talk alot about going to be heroic in situations of crisis are most likely not to do a damn thing when put to the test.

ChairHome
03-07-2008, 06:44 AM
Seriously though, there's no way of telling what the risks are of trying to stop someone, but if you saw a purse snatcher on the street grab some lady's purse and run by you (given that he didn't use a weapon to threaten the lady), you wouldn't try to trip him at least?

And if you say no, I hope that the mugger kills your Uncle Ben.

I think he was just trying to do the right thing. I can't honestly say I'm sure if I'd try to do the same in that position, but for people to call that guy dumb is, in itself, idiotic. I probably would've stopped once the couple got in the car though.

Heck, maybe we have the guy pegged wrong and he wanted the $5 himself. jk.

QFT. Anyone can say anything now, but how you handle yourself in crunchtime makes the actual difference. Not saying the guy was stupid or anything. But you seriously have to measure the risk level in any scenario, wether you move to action or not. Now If I saw a mugging on the street or something, I'm not afraid to say I wouldn't just jump in, not until I got a good picture of what was going on before I jumped in like Hercules and ended up getting myself AND the person being mugged killed.

This reminds me of ABC's "What Would You Do?" series. The show sets up situations where an illegal act is occurring (using props/actors of course), then sees how people would react to the situation (all caught on hidden camera).

I always disliked this series as the setup situations vary greatly from their real-life counterparts, and the show always puts a negative spin on the people who "did nothing". Perhaps someone should show this story to ABC and let them really see what happens when people "do the right thing".

Satomiblood
03-07-2008, 07:14 AM
I would honestly do nothing in that situation. It was 2 kids swiping a tip jar. They weren't carrying a gun or threatening to hurt or kill anyone while in there. This is why all food and retail businesses need hired security to handle these situations instead of civilians putting it upon themselves.

once i was visiting one of my moms stores and some old guy was trying to steal a carton of milk (worth like $1.35 at the time) and the employee jumped over the counter to grab him but accidently ended up crashing through the glass container the milk was stored in cutting up his arm horribly

it required like 300 stitches or some insane amount and almost $200 to get new glass

and the old man got away with the milk

Yeah, this is exactly how I feel. I have two little sisters and there is just something in me that cannot sit back and allow someone to rape a woman. I just could not walk away no matter the cost. But THAT is about the only way I would get involved. Forget some stores money, I'm not going to stop a guy from robbing a place, that is stupid.

it was just some kids stealing money, 5$ to be exact. im sure the EMPLOYEES didnt care as much as the "chivalrous customer" did...he had the right intentions, but its like the difference between what you would do if you saw a guy yelling at a girl and if you saw a guy beating her...me personally,i MIGHT have tried to trip them...otherwise im not endangering my life for a minimaly (sp?) criminal act.
you should only protect:
loved ones
children
elderly
defensless/disabled

NOT a tip jar...no matter HOW much is in it...(IMO)
