You know whats random? Farting. How can you tell if one's coming if its not from you? Talk about unpredictable. Everybody does it but no one expects it. People are so outta sync with their environment.

Anyway Marvel isn't random among good players. Most of the things that happen, happens because the player chose to push that button to trigger whatever event. Marvel can only be *random* if the player(s) are button mashing.

Smash.. I dunno. Items popping outta nowhere, people trading swords for bats and flowers... Solid Snake.. Pretty random? Possibly.

Smash's randomness usually stems from the appearance of Items and the stages themselves. Though I wouldn't know damn shit about Smash tournament rules, as I never cared to play smash on tournament play.

I beg to differ. After seeing high level play in both games. There is without question that not only is Smash worthy of being compared to Marvel. But Smash is more technical than Marvel as well. Just advanced movement in Smash is hard as it is. And every single move in the game has to be canceled (L Cancel) to build up momentum in the fight. Have u ever listened to people play Smash? And I don't mean players talking, I mean button inputs. It's crazy! No wonder they were pretty much forced to allow Smash into EVO 07. It's the highest rated fighting game in the entire country...every noob and pro plays it. Weather it's for fun or comp. Tournaments for this game take damn year a year. Because there are so many people who participate.

Just imagine if all these people who play smash...played 3S, Arcana, or Marvel...your tournaments would be twice as long.

I mean I was one of those people who said Smash is pretty random...but my reasoning behind it is pretty much my experience vs. Samus. Who to me should be at least top 3 in Melee. She has auto guard, missiles, range, probably the best edge guard in the game, amazing recovery, and almost no bad matchups. So what makes her Random...the fucking Auto guard...since to me no one else in the game has it. Oh and by the way it takes like 20 years to kill her...gay...so homo!

But anyways...with Brawl coming out and internets...just watch and see how..Smash will be compared to Marvel...when Marvel will NEVER have as many people playing in its tournaments and Brawl will double in entry size...

Marvel is one of my favorite games of all time, and I like Smash ok, but to say it isn't a real fighting game and doesn't deserve to be in Evo is just straight ignorance or bias (or both.) Someone brought up a good point, Smash is more technical than people want to give it credit for. L-canceling is hard to do consistently and it has more strategy in it than a lot of fighters. When people say it's not a rel fighting game, it's EXACTLY like when some average Joe-blow gamer looks at SF and says it's not deep or technical. Is it more technical than Marvel, hell no, but it's a good game and deserves to be in Evo.

Smash is more random just due to the way certain characters have abilities.

For instance, Peach's Forward Smash is actually 3 different ones, but it's random whether you're getting the Golf Club, Frying Pan, or Tennis Racket for it. Each of them has their own range. Her Turnips are also random as depending on the more "sickly" look of them, the more damage they deal, but it's random depending on which one comes out. And even sometimes she'll also pull out items.

Game & Watch is also random with his forward special attack. You could get a "1", which does crap for damage, or get a "9" and KO someone instantly.

And as for the whole Smash isn't technical and not worthy of being a tournament game is complete BS. The game is more technical than most other 2D or 3D fighters I've ever played when you get to the tournament level. Wavedashing in Melee has to be one of the hardest things to do (you have to spend a lot of time to do it consistently and then be able to utilize it in competition) and in tournament level play it is considered BASIC MOVEMENT in order to just compete. Combine that with the whole ShFFLing thing and you have to have ridiculous hand dexterity to play.

Unicef isn't sponsoring evo so if you want a game you got to bring the numbers. if you are talking about gameplay/tourney results, then marvel isnt that random at all but...

in terms of game engine... marvel is random as shit. ive seen hailstorm do 10% chip sometimes, and like 0.01% sometimes on an almost dead sent, ive gotten hit by my OWN sent-a assist before, sent unfly randomly runs out without warning, snapback/alpha counter glitches, if your assist gets hit by shockwave you cant block it sometimes, etc...

i know nothing about smash. besides that i would rather play/watch marvel.

Since you otherwise seem decent and competent, I'm just going to chalk this thread up as unintentional flamebait considering that half of the people responding are just bashing Smash. It would figure that ringopan would be an exception after I couldn't think of anything (although out of all those, I think that only Hailstorm is "random" and even that has a method to its madness).

I'm somewhat interested though as to what you view as "random" since you seemed to think that you had a different view than other people....

But, yeah, Smash is far more "random".

what is this method? i would like to inflict godly amounts of chip every time (and the answer is not mashing... sometimes mashing doesn't do shit with a blocked hailstorm). also curious to how sent unfly is not random? unless i missed someone figuring out how long it lasts, or how many actions you get before it automatically runs out...

I voted Marvel. There's just much more to do in Marvel and much more options over all. Smash is pretty random as well, not real fixed set to knock someone out, random move properties, and the like.

Both pretty random, keeps things fresh for me though.

I never really played Sentinel even when I played--main team was Ruby Heart, Doom, and Captain Commando/Cable IIRC--and it's been a while since I've played, but I do vaguely remember it being said that Unfly only lasts 10 real-time seconds. I'm not sure about the amount of actions being restricted, but I wouldn't really be surprised.

As for Hailstorm, that is the closest thing to random in the game (I don't know how I could forget that bitch Storm), but I'm pretty sure that the most random part of Hailstorm depends on height, which is why Sentinel (of all freaking people) seems to get "randomly" knocked down instantly half of the time if he's on the opposite edge of the screen (or so I've noticed).

As for unblockable screen movers, IIRC, if your assist gets hit with them, you can only block them if you're relatively close to your assist, otherwise you get Sent flying too. (You can kill me for the pun later.)

It's basicaly another glitch, which this game is full of, but considering most, if not all, of them have been figured out at this point, they aren't really "random".

(Well, nothing really is, but that's sort of besides the point.)

Damn, this thread kind of makes me to play Marvel again, but then I remember that it's nothing but 6 characters, slews of people better than me and needless money matches. (That and what lamewadd said about its fanbase being made up of a lot of people who are sore losers who will "fight you".)
