I am going through this myself right now. I started my first stick about 3 weeks ago. It has been a slow process of learning, but very fun. You can get pretty much everything you need at Lowe's or Home Depot.

I started out using MDF, but messed it up pretty bad. When I went back, I said screw messing with with the debris MDF creates, so just went with some 3/4" Oak to make the sides/top, while leaving the bottom 1/4" MDF.

I have zero experience in woodwork, and so far everything seems ok. The key is having the right tools, and planning ahead. :)

I will post a whole log once I am done with it, since it has taken me this long to get where I am. Otherwise, it will just get lost in the sea of posts.
