View Full Version : Funny early SF2 reviews!

I found these through a website about various arcade systems.
Pretty funny reviews. "Ryu, a martial arts expert from the original Street Fighter game. This time he's learned several new moves, including Hurricane Punch, Dragon Kick, and Fireball. He's agile and strong and is a brilliant all-around fighter."

http://www.solvalou.com/subpage/arcade_reviews/140/334/street_fighter_ii_review.html

Also, I found these 2 US flyers for Super Turbo to be pretty shameless and funny. Really says a lot about how the arcade biz was run. "You set the speed for the fastest, most furious fighting action ever!" "For super profits at turbo speed, call your Capcom distributor or Capcom today!"

Haha I had that issue of C+VG magazine when I lived in Europe.

That shit was cutting edge back then.

My friend's idiot mom threw it out for no apparent reason when he borrowed it. She threw away everything.

There's a bunch more cool stuff on that site. Lots of Capcom games had what they list as "secret file" which apparently is a bunch of inside documentation and fun stuff about their games...like this crazy day in the park picture with all the SF/Final Fight universe characters: http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&db=videodb&id=3558&image=4

Here's the main page of the Capcom hardware on System 16 (where I found this stuff). Just browse by system and check out the goodies.

as far as that flyer goes.... why is there three ryu's, and two of them are crying (fishing, and apparently alpha ryu getting dumped by sakura for SF2/3 ryu)

Lonestar
03-12-2008, 06:40 AM
LOL, there's like 2 Akumas in there, a few Kens, I think 3 Ryus (one fishing), 3 Sagats (one scratching his ass), and look Oro is hanging in the tree! LOL down in the lower left Dhalsim and Necro are stretching and grabbing Poison's leg and a fish. Dee-Jay is passed out drunk. I think that is Dan that has fallen in the lake (you can only see his Gi). Sean is just sitting all alone and lonely with his stupid b-ball. :D I love how all the huge characters are crowded around intimidating Cammy.

About the SF1 cabs, I believe they came in a couple versions. The deluxe one was huge and stupid and had the rubber buttons.

Since the flyer is apparently promoting Street Fighter III: New Generation, I guess this picture has a representation of all the characters from SF1, Final Fight, SF2, SFA2, and SF3:NG? Cool find. I saw 4 Ryus (one is near the top doing the "break the stone blocks" bonus stage in SF1), but not sure if there's a 4th Ken. Unless that's Ken boating there.

NOT cool. I played it at a skating rink when I was a kid. *2* fuckin big-ass buttons. Really fucks up your strategy. You're trying so hard to hit the button with the correct force that your joystick play goes right out the window. Turned an already lame game into a mash- er, bashfest. Eventually (12 minutes later) I walked away and found a game I love to this day: Pandora's Palace.

Favorite parts of the 'day at the park' picture:

- 'sick' Birdie putting his finger through Alpha Birdie's physically-impossible mohawk.
- Balrog and Mike partyin' and boozin' it up.
- Alpha Sagat (purple with yellow shorts) dumping Dan into the lake ("Oyaj--*splash*")
-ST Gouki having finished raping Bison, with Alpha Gouki about to do the same to Fat Bison (who's got the 2 over his head from Alpha Gen's Super).
- Ibuki taiking aim at Geki while her friend tries to hold her back.
- Alex and II-Zangief thumb-wrestling.
- Gill and Kolin acting like they're the only ones that matter.

Also, that's III-Ryu Sakura's dumping A-Ryu for. II-Ryu's busy fishing with Gouken and Goutetsu. He's also had his line break, which explains the tears.

Earliest EGM preview of SF2

http://www.imagepup.com/up/tLC7_1193177692_EGMSFIIfirstlook.jpg

from EGM Number 21, April 1991
(came out in March 1991, probably written in Feb 1991)

a funny USENET post on SF2 when it was still new

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.misc/msg/06806ccae3ad59ef?dmode=source

Well this is to all those who enjoyed Street Fighter(arcade):

I have just seen this new arcade game that is a follow up
to that great game, Street Fighter.

This sequel is even better than that of the last one.
Now you can choose 8 different characters to fight with. All
of them have secret moves and each one has a special attacking
skills!!! Each fighter can defeat other fighters but can be
beaten by another set of fighters. It is similar to the game
rock, paper and scissor.

You can use the conventional player (RYU or KEN),
or you can get a flamethrowing Hindu,
a cute kicking Chinese girl,
a quick American Marine,
Japanese SUMO wrestler,
Russian with a cause,
some greenish creature that really kicks butt.

You also fight with more countries and more scenery to
boot. THe game is difficult enough so that veterans of the
first game can get a run for their money, while beginners of the
game can have fun too. The greatest fun is the one to one combat
with a human opponent! It a great game! Go play it!!
