Raph ran through the winners bracket undefeated. We had 28 participants (4 didn't show, neither did most alternates) and it ran pretty smoothly. Took about 3 1/2 hours, including some people with connection issues.

I'll give some thoughts on the tourny tomorrow, but overall, it seems like it went very well.

I also ran an 8 person round robin after this which lasted 4 rounds. :woot:

ONLINE TOURNEY

TUESDAY MARCH-18-2008
6:45PM PST signups starts, Tourney will begin around 7PM (or whenever I managed to get home from work)
Try to arrive early so we can start on time!!

32 ENTRANTS MAX (will expand to 64 if enough people show interest/register)


Rules: (THESE MAYBE BE MODIFIED UP UNTIL TOURNAMENT STARTS, PLEASE KEEP UPDATED ON CHANGES)

-1v1
-2 stock, 3 minutes - BEST OUT OF 5 (3 out of 5 wins)
-DOUBLE ELIMINATION

-Default settings!
-All items on, Spawn rate MEDIUM
-All stages allowed
-First stage will be picked at random (I will tell you what stage first match is on)
-Winner must keep character
-Loser may change character and they will battle on a new random stage
OR
-Loser may keep same character and pick stage.

- On giving it some thought for the first matchup stage (which should be random), since there is no reliable way to see that it was really picked random, I'm thinking I will create a random game on my own system, and assign each pair's first stage for "random". (I will not be entering this tourney as I feel I'll have my hands full organizing).
- If it goes to sudden death, sudden death is in effect
- Match results will be reported to me in the IRC channel.
- If NEITHER player has extra options open (stock with time limit), matches will be played on 3 minute timer. Game ends when timer runs out OR when someone has died twice. At that point the person who has died twice is to stop moving until the timer has run out.
-IF YOU PLAY A TIMED MATCH BECAUSE NEITHER PLAYER HAS EXTRA OPTIONS UNLOCKED, PLEASE NOTIFY ME BEFOREHAND.


Requirements:

-At least 1 empty slot on your brawl friend list (for your opponent each round)
-IRC (match setups/results will be done via IRC) - Connect to channel #srkbrawl on EFNET (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=151627)
-IF YOU ARE NOT ON IRC (I will tell everyone to enter another channel come tourney time), YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE TOURNEY!


How it will go:

-After matchups are posted, The two opponents will register each other's friend code (if necessary) and begin the game

-I will assign the beginning random stage select for each pair and the game must start on that stage.

-The players pick their char AFTER the stage is announced by me (random out of all possible stages).

-The loser has the option of changing his char and going random stage (request a new random stage from me)
OR
-The loser may keep his character and begin on a stage of his choice.

-Continue playing until one player has won 3 rounds then report results and wait for your next match.

-IF YOU DROP OUT, let me know.

-If you do not respond within 3 minutes of your match, you will be given a loss, so please be prompt/alert. I'm not waiting extra long for anyone and I don't want to have this go all night.

Notes:

This will be an online tournament, capped at 32 players. The time limit is 3 minute, thus replays can be saved.


As Mr.Wizard stated, (http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=4924312&postcount=601) we are seeing how Brawl works.

This is to see whats horribly broken and explore the game, this is why all items are on and settings are on default.


Again. THIS IS TO SEE WHATS HORRIBLY BROKEN AND EXPLORE THE GAME.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING HORRIBLY WRONG AND BROKEN AND WANT TO MAKE A CASE FOR BANNING,
RECORD THE GAMEPLAY AND CONTACT ME TO SEND IT TO ME.


As such, I do not want complaints about unfair match ups, items are bs, etc. If you do not like these rules, DO NOT ENTER. If you are going to bitch and complain, DO NOT ENTER. If you are willing to make a case for why certain things should be banned, certain rulesets, etc.. then enter and BACK UP YOUR STATEMENTS.


Logistics:

You may sign up here now and I will take the first 32. IF YOU REGISTER, INCLUDE YOUR BRAWL GAMERTAG (5 letter one) SO THAT YOUR OPPONENTS CAN IDENTIFY YOU ON THEIR FRIEND LIST). If 32 people are not commited by tomorrow evening, I will ask in the irc channel. If you are not in the IRC channel at the assigned time 6:45PST, I will remove you and replace you with someone else. If there is a huge response/signups, I may increase the registrant cap to 64. This is unofficial, with no prizes, maybe some moderate bragging rights etc. Rules are unable to be enforced, so I am expecting the honor rule.

The main purpose of this tournament is to HELP ESTABLISH AN EVO RULESET.
You can be a part of that process, so I expect cooperation.

This will probably not run too smoothly, but hopefully we can make this work and future tournies will be run more efficiently.


If you have additional questions/issues/comments regarding these rules or this tournament, post up what you have to say here. I will change rules, requirements, etc as necsesary. Nothing here is set in stone until the tourney begins tomorrow, so please be aware of changes.


Other things:

I know the game is new, and everyone may not have unlocked all characters/stages/options yet. I request if you plan to participate, to have AS MUCH unlocked as possible. Especially at least stages, and extra options. You have a day to unlock as much as possible, since we need to explore all stages at least. Thank you.

I am also trying to decide what should be done in case of extreme lag and people that can't connect. If you have ideas on how to resolve this, please post up suggestions. As of right now, if two people can't connect..I will attempt to determine which player is the cause. Both players should attemp to host the game. If that still does not work and the person who is the cause is indeterminable, I may have some random way of determining who advances.. maybe Rock/Paper/Scissors or something else if someone can come up with a better suggestion.


I am currently undecided if I should ask everyone to save ALL replays, incase someone claims something is overpowered, there might be another vid where it shows that something is not overpowered.. like dodging Final Smash or dragoon or something.. or maybe we can look for counter arguments in future tournaments.. not sure. Anyone have thoughts/opinions on this?

Took me forever to figure out as well. Takes 200 KO's. Check in your brawl records data. Special brawl KO's don't count. I just did regular 20 stock, high damage, high speed matches or something, and just kept spamming kills on level 1 computers. Doesn't take too long.

As for the tourney, I'll be out for this one sadly, but I will bring the hype in future tourneys!

Yeah, sorry about the time frame, unfortunately the earliest i get off of work is 6pm, and its usually a bit later, plus i need time to get home. I don't want to say it'll start 6:30, then get held up at work and have a whole bunch of people with pitchforks looking for my head.

With 32 people, double elim, estimate about 20 minutes per round, i'm hoping it'll be done in at most 3 hours. But since this is the first try, we'll see how it goes. I dont want it to run too late either since i work at 8am too.

Every opponent you play, you play them until one person has 3 wins (3 out of 5 games for the majority). If you lose, you get sent to the losers bracket and fight your way back up. If you win the losers bracket, you challenge the winner's bracket. (every evo tourney is double elim).

I think its easiest that each pairing adds their friends code at the time they find their matchup, instead of having everyone add everyone else. That way you only need to add one person per round. If I had more time, I would have posted the bracket up early, but unfortunately work and such thwarts that idea.

Correct.

If the loser keeps the same character, the loser is free to pick any stage he wants.

If the loser intends to change character, I should be notified so I can assign a new random stage to play on.
Note, if the you win and notice the loser has changed his character, make sure you are aware of what stage I say they should be fighting on, as to prevent the loser from changing his char, and picking whatever stage he wants.

At worst, if there is some confusions, the players may need to reconnect to each other to get proper char/stages going etc. Hopefully it wont get too messy.

Actually, yeah thats probably fine. There isn't really much at stake right here, and if people are dishonorable bastards and start picking stages with huge advantages for their chars, maybe we can get some determination on broken tactics/stages faster with replays :P

Indeed. If it turns out items suck, fine, next time we'll cut them down, and if having any items at all is still bad, we'll get rid of all of them. If instead having all items is fine for good play, that's cool too, we'll keep them.

I'll do matchups as soon as a I can when i get home. I work 8am until 6-6:30pm every weekday normally, usually later. There is a problem with this.

For Wi-Fi, the Stage Selecting Option is always grayed out so that it will forever read Choose. Ergo, the Loser Picks option is not available within the Wi-Fi system, even with the more rules option open.

There must be some way to remedy this before the tournament.

No, because unlike the majority of them (apparently there are those on SWF who actually want to test as well), we actually took the time to test it and make sure instead of "lulz it's just like melee so we know it don't work and ban it immediately".

no need to go on irc after every round to announce stage that well take to long and is not needed.

main correction is that the tourney is best 3/5, so first to 3 wins gets it. And since the rules stipulate if you lose you can change character bu you dont pick the stagel, so if you happen to lose then dont switch characters so you dont have to hop on IRC to announce you did, and have nasir have to pick a stage at random.

man, it gets complicated if you dont have a computer dedicated to IRC

It's always the worst case scenario when I'm involved, but it's not like it was unavoidable. That's why I didn't (remember to) record.

The only thing I ended up recording was that absurd Mario Bros. stage "fight"; I couldn't record the New Pork City stupidity because of Sudden Death.

Chili rarely does more than 20% to me.
75m rocks hard, nothing random.
I was killed by a final smash tonight zero times.
Pokeballs and Assist Trophies are risk vs reward. Assist Trophies that I popped got me killed twice, and pokeballs are often worthless and if they get reflected, your opponent 'owns' the pokemon.

I have this game, but have not been playing it that much, GGPO is more my speed. As a counter to that, the tourney vids made me want to start picking up the game, looked hella fun. All the Melee vids are so fucking boring to watch, these were quite entertaining.

Though it's obvious that a few stages/items will probably get banned, I really hope a fair share can be kept in, along with final smash's. Makes the game look like it's supposed to be played to me. With my scrubtacular theory fighting while watching those matches, I really liked how some of the items/smashs changed the gameplay up.

I might actually give this game a shot. If I don't please post a few of these tourney vids from time to time, good shit.

Is it possible to spot dodge the shells? And if dodging/etc is only hard online, its not good motivation to ban it for live.

There isn't anything random about 75m.

Summit, however, probably will end up getting up cut, if only because of how stupidly easy it is to die on a stage with no ledges. *cough*Skyworld*cough* That and the fish doesn't help and the icicle does seem to form randomly.

And the shells on Mario Bros. can be dodged, but the question is should they be when they kind of completely change the game? Besides, anyone with a reflector has a stupid advantage on that stage that is a lot more lethal than other advantages character usually have.
