View Full Version : Are you happy with the similarities between SF4 and SF2?

I do appreciate that many readers will assume this is a loaded question, so it might be better to dispense with any discussion from the outset. I just thought it might be interesting to gauge public opinion, objectively, on the trend for similarity between SSF2T and SF4, which has been raised (by myself and many others) in a number of threads.
Bearing in mind that Capcom developers may read the forum, consider this an opportunity to affirm that you like the direction SF4 is heading, or that you are put off by this trend. Pro-active market research, anyone?
Is there a way to lock posting, whilst keeping the poll active?

Well I consider myself a retro type gamer so too me street fighter 2 was the best in the entire series. So keeping this game with a street fighter 2 feel and a few more game play features (i.e EX moves, Saving system) is a great idea IMO. But now comes in the fact that there going to be coming out with the SSF2T HD, so if Capcom was trying to target the fans of street fighter 2 mainly they should have just made SSF2T HD for us fans and kept Street Fighter 4 moving forward with a feel that separates it from the others for the newer fans of the series.

The only thing that irks me is that it is called Street Fighter 4 when it is actually Street Fighter 2.5. I think they are trying to go retro with the cast. If there was 50 charaters in the game then I'd expect all the SF2 cast. But with (what looks to be at this time) 16 characters again, it's coming off as sf2.5.

Its not the first time that a sequel was set in a time period before the previous installment. I was just hoping it'd be later than 2 enough so that it fills the huge holes in the story.

Not really... I don't think STHD is a big enough project itself to revive SF. SF4 will appeal to most people a lot more than hd remix imo.

I don't understand why people keep bringing this up. Have you actually read any of Ono's interview? They did that with SF3 and We saw how successful it was.

Does this need it's own thread? It's talked about in every character thread.

Yeah I agree. It seems STHD is purely for fans of the Udon art style. Talk about butchering the designs.

The game strikes me as another upgrade to Street Fighter II and not really a sequel.

I'm honestly really happy they're putting out a SF4 at all, so I'm really satisfied with everything they're doing now that they've fixed the art. It's good to see some old favorites to come back, and also satisfying that they're making new characters. All in all, let's do it.

Can't say anything about game play. But this is looking to be the true sequel to SF2. Which is good or bad depending on your taste.
SF4 is about as much like SF2 as SFA1 or SF3 or CvS were.
I don't know why I keep reading the SF4 forum, since I hate almost everything I read when I do.

In the end, I'm still going to buy SF4. I'll get over the retro ideology from Ono-san. I may get what I want in a revisionize SF4 down the road (sounds so selfish)...

Hmmm, another topic bound for the same old discussion eh? Was a new thread really needed, pick just about anyone on the forum already... it's all about the same thing, poll or not.
Sorry.
And FYI: SF4 is not trying to be SF2/2 it's building on the success of the formula of SF2, the feeling, the balance, and the soul of it. They're not trying to remake SF2, they're trying to do again what SF2 managed to do so successfully. I would have thought that was obvious by now. :wonder:

There are already five versions of SF2 and numerous re-releases.
Alpha 3 had the SF2 cast in it too and CVS2 has most of them.
I'd much prefer new characters or use many of the SFIII cast again.

Alpha 3 had the SF2 cast in it too
The Alpha versions of said characters weren't really like their SFII counter parts. They had different: Normals, Specials, Supers, Design Scheme's and so forth. Besides, the whole point in Alpha was too make a prequel to Street Fighter II with characters from the original Street fighter: Gen, Adon, and Birdie Street Fighter Fighter II: Dhalsim, Zangief, Chun-li, Blanka, Vega, Balrog, Bison, Cammy and Both: Ryu, Ken, Sagat. It wasn't presented or intended to be a sequel.
Also, if your counting the arcade versions, they did not insert the entire cast like Street Fighter IV seems to be doing.

Not thrilled with the cast, and I haven't played it so I can't say anything in that regard. Would like to have seen something between 2 and 3, stylistically, and hopefully a few of 3's better characters included.

There are two things wrong with this poll:
1) The question is not fair - he even asked to cut off posting so we don't say anything against it.
2) The rest of the fans that don't come here aren't taken into account.
So it's obvious the OP doesn't listen.

I tried to be as objective and impartial as possible in the original post. As I've said, I was simply trying to assess public opinion. As such, I've done my utmost to avoid slanting the question. There's not really much to 'say against' a neutral question, except to vote, or abstain.
In suggesting that the thread discussion remain locked, I was making an effort to prevent it descending into a literary brawl. All I wanted were the numbers. Since people have been completely civil so far, I guess my concerns were unfounded.
2) The rest of the fans that don't come here aren't taken into account.
The anti (or disinterested) SF4 brigade a far more likely to give this part of the forum a wide berth. If anything, given the demographic within the group we have here, we should expect to see a bias in favor of SF4.
It's certainly interesting to see the results that we're seeing, from the community that we are.
So it's obvious the OP doesn't listen.
I have read and understood every counterpoint raised.
Listening and being convinced are two very different things.

I'm curious, the people who do like this game. Do you see Street Fighter IV as an upgrade to the Street Fighter II franchise [Sorta like Hyper Fighting or Super Turbo were upgrades] or do you see this as a completely new game? And, why do you feel it is?

That's not what I was trying to say though. I'm actually liking hd remix. I was just saying sf4 will hit more with the casual audience because of the new 3d graphics and the whole presentation of everything. It's a much larger scale game than sthd is.

edit: given the way that you framed your question, I should point out that I haven't played SF4, like >99% of this forum and more like 100% of the people who answered this poll, and therefore can't honestly say whether or not I like the game.

Well i didnt play the game yet, so far happy to see the original 8 and the other new chars in this game, more to come...
AlphaCrush

Frankly, even if they simply had the original 8 with a new play system (which they do) I would buy it. But since they have added Balrog , Bison, Sagat, Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte and possibly 3-6 more (new old? Who cares?) fighters it is a must buy. Unless it come out this year, I may not be buying any games in 2008.
Does it feel like SF2? Not to me. This thing comes across as something new. It feels fresh.

I wasn't asking if you liked the game itself, but the direction it's going homie. Obviously it's a new game, but do you like it because it's a patch or upgraded version of SFII or do you like it because you feel it's new game altogether?

The similarities are okay by me.
It is a patch to SF2 the way Shinobi on the PS2 was a patch/upgrade of the 16-bit Shinobi III on the Genesis. It's an entirely new project which happens to use some old characters and gameplay mechanics. To call it an SF2 upgrade minimizes that the fact that it is, literally, an entirely new game, which has SF2 characters in it.
To answer the question, I like both elements. I'm a fan of the SF2 characters being in it and the familiar gameplay aspects, and I'm also interested in the new parts of the game.

SF2 is one of the best games of all time. All they need to do is make sure throws don't have as much crazy priority and add a few more new things and they have an instant classic. I just hope whatever new systems they implement won't be too gimmicky and hinder strategy.
I mean what do newer fans of the series want? Hmm? Parry? Custom combos? Other shit a casual player could never get into? Seriously that shit just alienates the casual fan and gives serious players an even bigger advantage over them. I think the SF series needs to get away from rigid execution based systems (e.g. Custom Combos, Parries) and go towards more tactic oriented ones. (e.g. Alpha counters, pushblock, safe fall, pursuit attacks, Universal Overheads etc.)

Personally, while I don't hate this game and I think it looks amazing.
I didn't want to feel nostalgic over Street Fighter II, so I was quite upset about it.
However, I don't really feel this way anymore and have finally got over the dissapointment.
The new characters are trickling and I really appreciate that.
I hope the there are more new characters than old ones.
It's a shame they didn't attempt to redesign some of the characters looks,
or even give them so new moves. However, that is just my view on things.
To make this game amazing for me, they need to implement one or
two new gimmicks (new, so not parrying) and have costume customization (even if it is quite shallow).
Anyway, I voted too similar in cast and gameplay, but that doesn't mean I don't think like the game is worth purchasing already.

it does feel like ST to some of the player here ;) they probably played it in their dreams?
perhaps jiggled their ps2 pad while watching the videos?
fact of the matter is some of these normals etc etc have stayed the same since sf2. Ryu even has some sf3 moves, so i dont see the problem.
It has a new system, saving/ultras. Even has ex's, has your normal super art aswell.
DO ANY of you remember player SF3 for the first time? i thought the characters were awful ! Im used to them now cause theres nothing else new to play SF3 wise.
Fact is, we dont know how many new characters will be released. And frankly im fine with the cast, the iconic cast that made this game is back.
[does anyone watch the wire? same way the cast got togethet to fight crime in seasons 3, u get this tingly feeling]
AWESOME.
Does any one miss the NEW cast in SF EX series? [who, what? yeah exactly]
