View Full Version : The PS2 Thread: Yes, there are still two more years in its lifecycle

Septimus Prime

Since the other members of the PlayStation family have their own threads (PSP having TWO threads), someone thought it would be a good idea to give Big Bro PS2 its own thread too.

So let's make it happen. There are still two years left in PS2's 10-year lifecycle, and though prime time has passed, there are still games being released.

So let's discuss them. No trolling.

Sony still harping that ten-year bullshit? LOL

But yeah, God of War II came out last year, and that was the best shit the PS2 ever had so...good job Sony

But seriously, P4 is gonna be hypeness. Although I still need my own copy of 3. Waiting for FES to come out for that.

Also, ARCANA HYPE NEXT MONTH, BITCHES.

I don't see a need for a PS4.

If PS3 can handle all the new games, why waste resources on a PS4?

Anyways, most of my friends stick with PS2.

God tier for fighting games, except DC for Marvel, although PS2 still has a version of Marvel.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting Ultimate Ninja 3, since it's got dual language and fucking YONDAIME. Kinda glad I put off getting the JPN version.

Also, managed to get Lego Star Wars 2 for a buck fiddy yesterday. Enjoying it so far. I love the fact that they open up Empire and Jedi as soon as you beat the first mission in A New Hope, lol.

Thinking about getting the new Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. Yes, I know they are re-releases, but I lost my copy of MGS2:Substance, and it's almost cheaper to get the remake, with new art work more bonus. I already have 3:Snake Eater and Subsistence. I'm a pretty die hard fan, think it's worth getting again?

m121akuma
03-23-2008, 08:25 PM
There are new bonuses in the collection version of Substance? I dunno if I'd say that's worth it though, especially if you already have Subsistence. I think 2 is underrated, but I don't know if it's 30 dollars worth of underrated...

How is 2 underrated? What? I mean because of 2 we got 3 but I mean... 2 is no. It's not like other part 2s in other franchises where you still enjoy them. I've never had the desire to even look at MGS2 after I finished it. Retarded ass game.

Well, they are living up to it so far, though the first Playstation only lasted like 7 or 8 years and fell short of that expectation.

But if you compare this to some of the other dead consoles of the past, you can see that there is a big difference in how Sony continues to support its old hardware in contrast to what others did.

First, let's look at Xbox. 4 years. As soon as 360 came out, it was dead. Unsurprisingly, in 360's fifth year, 2010, MS plans to bring out another console in the Xbox line. What do you think will happen to 360 then?

Then there are the Nintendo handhelds, starting from Gameboy Color. What were their shelf lives? Like a year? Two? Nice.

And, of course, my favorite: Sega. What a joke in terms of support. Sega would prematurely kill its own consoles by bringing out something new (and ultimately inferior to its competitors' offerings).

PS1 was essentially dead at PS2's release. I can't think of anything worthwhile to be released after that. Essentially making it 5 years.

Nintendo and Sony systems have the longest lifespans by far with the notable exceptions of the Atari 2600 and Neo Geo.

nes was 1983-about 2005 in Japan and 1985-1994 in America.
snes was like 1990-1999 in Japan and the US
n64 was 1996-2001
gcube was 2001-2006
Wii is 2006-????

OG Gameboy was 1989-1998
GBC was 1998-2001
GBA was 2001-2007
DS is probably going to go until at least 2012

PS1 was like 1994-2001
PS2 will be like 2000-2010.
PS3 will probably be like 2006-2012
PSP will again probably keep going until about 2010.

I believe Final Fantasy IX came out shortly after PS2's release. Also, let's not forget that PS2's launch library was less than stellar, which made PSX still a viable console for some time (much like how PS3's somewhat lackluster game line-up still makes PS2 viable right now).

m121akuma
03-23-2008, 08:58 PM
I forgot that FF9 was post PS2. But it's more than just the lack of games on PS3 that's pushing the PS2. There are still actually great titles being released. You just don't get shit like Persona on next gen yet. Hell, in Japan, Gundam Musou was ported DOWN from PS3/360 to PS2 with new stuff added. I can't think of stuff like that happening before. The PS2 is still serious competition for the next gen, something the PS1 couldn't really say after a year of the PS2's cycle.

Mm good thread, I've got the PS3 but realized I'm actually mostly playing PS2 games on there. I'm actually glad the PS3 doesn't have that many of those "must own" titles out yet, saves me some money.

I've recently been catching up on the great PS2 titles I've missed out throughout the year since some prices are dropping now. I've actually got a list written down in my wallet and I browse by the used sections every time I'm at the mall or so. Haha.

These collections of games they have released lately are extremely tempting, 3 games for $30, not bad at all in my opinion.

Here's a list for those who's not aware -

If you go to Playstation.com, you can log all of your Playstation 1, 2, 3, and P games, as well as your hardware. It actually makes things pretty easy to keep track of (and it also turns out that I have 125 Playstation games total bought over the years). Nintendo.com also has something similar, but it only lets you track Nintendo's own games, as well as a select few others. I probably have quite a few of those too.

Kojima played people well. The whole point of Raiden was to make Snake look more badass. To make Snake grow as a character. As such thanks to the hate towards Raiden, Kojima's plan was successful. People like Snake even more.

A title I have to get hands on is Shinobi. I liked that game entirely too much to not have it in my collection. And just for the hell of it I'll get Nightshade too. I have to pick the RE collection as well as the MGS one... Persona 3 is a must buy too. So many PS2 games to still buy. Curse you Sony for making my favorite console. The most recent games I've gotten I think are Star Wars: RoTS, Marvel Ultimate Load times, Rogue Galaxy and FFXII.

Not interested in/did play:
Shin Megami Tensei series (I think you guys call it Persona)
Arc the Lad?
Atelier Iris
XenoSaga

I think that's pretty much it. I wonder if I'm forgetting anything.

EDIT- Oh yeah, Disgaea. I thought it sucked so Disgaea 2 sits there unplayed. I also have Phantom Brave and those other ones but I do not play them. I heard Shadow Hearts is good, but I wasn't interested in playing it. I had Legend of Legaia 2 and liked it, but I overplayed it. Shin Megami Tensei series (I think you guys call it Persona)

Persona is a Megaten spinoff series, like the Digital Devil Saga and Devil Summoner series. The appeal of Persona 3 is that it manages to mix high-school life sim with a dark plot and good dungeon crawling, along with fantastic characters. It's definately a far cry from, say, Nocturne, which is a bit more traditional in gameplay, although it's plot is completely unconventional (and awesome). Megaten in general has a wide variety of gameplay styles in its various games, essentially giving something for everyone.

Way of the Samurai 1 and 2 are must haves. Also I don't care what anyone says, I love Samurai Western. Fighting off guns with swords is awsome. It's a great mindless hack n slash game that has a good deal of replay value to it. Mastering the bullet dodges, bullet delfects, different swords, and fighting styles gives you a great reason to play it. And I didn't even tell you about how much you can customize your guy. The items you customize with also give you certain power ups.

If you don't have this game then either get it or go lynch yourself. Get Tenchu Wrath of Heaven. That game is the perfect ninja simulator. Listening to its soundtrack right now..

If you beat GoW2 on a given difficulty, you can carry all the powerups, orbs, and most of the items and secrets when you do another run on an easier or same difficulty.

Ex., If you beat the game on Hard, you can play again on Hard, normal, or easy with almost everything you earned on the first run............including whatever you unlocked after beating the game.

I never completed Titan Mode........so I don't know if the Urns can be used on that mode.
