...the Japanese Style with Ball Top (Square or Octagon gate), convex buttons with Japanese button layout or American Style P360 with Bat Top, concave buttons and American button Layout.
Just curious about this. A lot of people I know (and myself included) have there own custom made sticks and prefer the Ball Top + Japanese button layout and would prefer if our arcades stuck with it rather than the P360 + American button layout.
:wonder: Anyways, just cast your vote and lets see what everyone here prefers... dood.

And I've never seen convex buttons at an arcade. :wonder:
I prefer japanese style so much so that I don't go play third strike in Seattle because it's a shitty american layout. I'm a total hater and I hate american bat top sticks, but really the biggest part is just the fucking american button layout. On top of that, it's not just the rectangle layout, it's the spacing of the buttons. I could play fine on that literal layout if only the buttons didn't have like a finger's width between each one.

If I had to choose, I'd say I prefer the Japanese layout. I've tried both and if I'm honest, I don't have a problem with the differences, or switching between them. That is to say that I'm equally bad on both

Japanese layout by far. Every time I head to the arcade to play before classes, it just feels so weird to play on the American layout and sticks.

American style. Which means Happ competition stick, and CONVEX Happ comp buttons.

check the MWC thread, no one wants to play on a cabinet. This question would go far better if it was a custom controller layout.

I'd have to say American right now, as that's the setup I've had more experience with.
I bought a Hori stick for my 360 recently, and even though that's not really authentic, that's as close to a Japanese style stick I've played with. It takes a little getting used to at first.
Buttons? Ehh, no preference.

Ball top with concave buttons for me. Could never get used to the baseball bat stick. And i like how my fingers kinda just rest in the concave instead of some fingers straining to be in a straight line.

japanese buttons and layout with an american stick. honestly, i fucking HATE sanwa/seimitsu sticks. I feel like i'm playing with a toy. give me a p360 with light spring, or better yet, a wico 360 or competition with a light spring with a japanese layout. that'd be awesome
you know what else would be awesome? each side of the cabinet had two sticks you can play with so each player could choose japanese or american (each cabinet is only one player, like the virtua fighter cabs, right?)

for me, japanese button layout is a must. i have small hands, so a lot of times, i have trouble pressing / reaching buttons comfortably on the american layout. i don't really have a preference for sticks; i can play on both styles.

I can't believe how many more people like japanese sticks over american ones. I thought it would be a little more even lol.
I actually prefer a hard spring 360 stick over everything unless I'm playing a 3d fighter or something. I'm really no good on japanese sticks at all, they just feel too small and loose for me. I have a hard time doing supers quickly and just can't maneuver as good.
The buttons on japanese sticks are awesome though.

So to stop this thread from riding the Japanese train I'll also say that I would like Sanwa or Seimetsu parts. Either that or put in a PS2 port so I can hook up my custom Sanwa. Japan FTW. I don't have a problem with US parts. I prefer a soft spring comp but I know some peepz like those hard Arnold spring sticks.

ps2 port so i can use my trusty ps2 pad....:lame:
no...really id be the only scrub at CTF using a pad lol
Why are people being such dicks about their personal preference? As if there's a right answer or something. I grew up playing on american sticks like a lot of you, but the console warriors now outnumber the arcade warriors. It's just a fact.
I don't think that either kind of stick would detract from the player base, but I would definitely 2nd the notion of there being some sort of controller port for ps2 pads.
I don't really care what kind of sticks there are, as long as they're not horribly stiff. I HATE sticks with tight springs, why should I have to shake the fucking cabinet everytime I wanna do a fireball? Also, don't like p360s and concave buttons...

I use to HATE the balltop but I thought it was cooler than a bat top design so I stuck with it and now I can't play 100% any other way without the trusty balltop. Plus you can get nifty FRUITY colored balltops to screw on to the stick that have bubbles inside!
BUBBLES!!!!!!!
Why aren't you people rushing to lizardlick.com yet to purchase these?! That aside, I'd like balltop stick with Japanese layout of buttons. Button choice wouldn't matter for me: I use to hate how Sanwa/Seimetsu buttons would press so sensitve, now I love that and I love the springy feel that Happs bring and they have a nice sound. And I would prefer the buttons be convex. I could play on American layout but enjoy the resting poition of my fingers over the Japanese style. I also love the way I can hook my middle finger under the balltop whereas on the bat top after about 10 matches or so, the inside of my middle ringer starts to rub raw.

American Sticks (don't know what they're called, but NOT P360s) and Concave buttons...but a certain kind of concave buttons...the current ones from HAPP are too thick and too deep...I can't find the kind that were only slightly thick and slightly concave...those are the controls where my execution is 100%, but I can't find them anywhere and don't know what they're called for custom sticks :[

There are two types of Happ/IL concave buttons: "Ultimate" and "Horizontal." Ultimates have a vertical microswitch and Horizontals have a horizontal one of course. They both have concave plungers. Happ Competition/IL Convex buttons have a convex plunger with a horizontal microswitch.
I myself will play on any of the following joysticks: IL Comp, new Happ Super (when it still has its diagonals intact), any Sanwa, any Seimitsu, and most Korean sticks. All I require is that the stick have microswitches (it must fucking clicks. I hate P360s and Sanwa/ASCII Flashes), be a name brand (no shitty Chinese knockoffs), and not suck (no Happ Chinese Comps, Ultimates, or P360s). I prefer Japanese joysticks though as they tend to work correctly more often than American ones no homo/no innuendo.
For buttons I don't really care and am willing to play on Happ convex, Sanwa, Seimitsu, or Crown buttons arranged in the American or Japanese layout but not with either layout messed up. I hate it when there is like an inch between each column of American buttons or the Japanese button layout is like a foot away from the stick meaning you have to contort your hand in a funny shape.

quit fucking shitting on arcades, its exactly this attitude that has killed the arcade scene in america. honestly playing in the arcade is probably the single most fun way to play, so yes, this is a valid question. I'm gonna lobby the shit out of my tilt to buy one of these, they have a T5dr machine so i think they could get a sfiv cab
as for preference, i like american layout with jap buttons and a p360.

maybe, but take a look at the EVo north thread and how many people bitch that the arcade perfect arcade games aren't on their favorite japanese hardware (cause we're in america) and they don't wanna go. Attitudes like that help even less.

SBO, a tournament that you will probably never qualify for and never have to play in. Much less any other japanese tournament or a japanese arcade.
There are more american arcade tournaments that you have a chance to goto (as well as american arcades) which would make your time to learn an american stick a bit more important than a japanese one.

That's right, mostly only Asian people make it into SBO. And not only SBO, our arcades are all use the Japanese style one, and the tournaments we enter, even the small ones, take place on the Japanese style ones. I guess different sticks and layouts for different regions, they should have just stuck to the Japanese one for everyone.
