View Full Version : So when are they gonna use the cool ink splotches?

Well we've already seen how the preview pics for each character all have an ink splotch or two thrown in there somewhere..and obviously we've seen the trailer.

They said they were going to use the ink splotches more and they haven't really done it. I remember reading that if you charge a saving attack up to level 3 then you get the ink splotches but that's probably not gonna happen at most levels of play, and it already seems like SF4 was MEANT to be defined by this kind of art style.

It seems like one of those happy accidents, Capcom made the awesome ink-style trailer and everyone liked the parts where ink flew everywhere and so Ono was like "Oh yeah..ink splotches..those will be in the game.."

Personally I think it'd be best if ink just flew out of the characters whenever they got hit. It'd be kind of like blood and it'd look cool. I'm not saying I want the game to be Mortal Kombat but that would look pretty cool IMO, and it'd create that whole moving painting image.

If not, maybe they could appear at the KO point, kind of like how in 3s the finishing blow always has this orange/green explosion along with dramatic pause. Speaking of the KO point, the one in this game seriously needs to be changed up, right now the pause is way too long and it just feels kind of lame and forced, not dramatic like in other games. I think ink would help with that.

If I don't mistake, they appear in the menus, intro, saving attacks and banners like "round 1", "KO" etc.
And in the last builds the characters are outlined by light brush strokes of black ink when performing Saving attacks. In before while performing SA I saw in as "blood" done by these moves.

I agree, the game needs lots more ink.

They're already using it. It's very subtle but you can see some ink trails during certain attacks and win poses and what not. Ono is not trying to make it a big visual part of the game since he feels it will detract from the overall playability of the game. He doesn't want too much flashy shit going on to distract people from the game itself. Basically...don't expect a whole lot more of it for the final game. I say the priorities of the game are better spent tweaking the looks of the characters since that's really the biggest issue visually about the game in the first place.

Yeah we don't want this shit looking to good or anything.

That's weird... see... i'd base my opinion of what the game was MEANT to be on what the ACTUAL game looks like... not what a TRAILER looks like.

"Man, you know Rival Schools was meant to be a 2D animated game since all the trailers were animated 2D!"

I don't mind the lack of ink. I don't even see how it would make sense if it were added profusely, at this point. Just keep it low key, as is.

But yes... the KO pause needs to go. It's way overdone and I think it should be toned down. I actually prefer when there isn't really one.

It would be a little distracting.

I never liked that trailer.

"Good" is entirely subjective. To me, SF2 looks good, and the ink trailer doesn't.

It would be cool if cancels are accompanied by a splash of ink.

That or they're adding an octopus character.

This is one of those things that will be really subtle if done well and the only thing you notice if done wrong. I mean if someone gets hit with an Ultra, does anyone want the game to explode in to tribal tattoos?

That would be pretty cool. Take a look at Guilty Gear. There's tons of visual jazz on most attacks, and it looks really cool. After a while, though, you just stop noticing it altogether. Look at 3S even. That game's white circles when you hit with attacks look pretty funky, don't they? When's the last time you punched someone and saw THAT? I'm all for some psychedelic hit and block effects.

I don't care for the ink. It will take away from the 'classic factor' and the novelty will soon wear off.

I agree that there should be more ink. It's easy to fob it off as a gimmick, but it helps to define the whole art.

Street Fighter 4 is a 2d based game and the trailer retained the hand drawn style perfectly, with incredible animation. I can't help feeling a little dissapointed looking at the beta game now. I keep hearing the developers refer to the risks they are taking with it's revolutionary art style. But I don't see it. Apart from the odd googly eye it's looking a bit like Street Fighter EX again (which I did actually quite like). They've even kept the whole original line up and just added a couple of token extra characters just like EX. Where's the brand new character roster like in SF3.

The exagerrated bodies, facial expressions and human ability work a lot better (and look a lot cooler) with hand-drawn artwork. The style of the trailer was great - I loved the focus on dramatic lighting and I was looking forward to playing a game that was even just a little bit as effective. Bold black splashes of shadow, dramatic changes of lighting, super moves that create a canvas white wash.

Now the colouful game play footage is around, I see that everything looks perfectly front lit and every single object in view has that bloody brand new bright sheen like so many other 3D games.

As games graphics have progressed, we are beginning to see graphics with no restraint and artists with the freedom to be creative without trying to push any techincal limits. I thought that capcom, after having several graphically experimental games behind them (killer7, vietiful Joe, okami etc) could be one company that would pull this off sucessfully.

SF4 does look good, but I expected a lot more style. I hope that when the game comes out I eat my words!
