Not sure if its download only, but ive read that if you preorder MGS4 sometime in April you will be given an invite to the closed beta for MGO. So the release may be a little far off.

EDIT: Did some searching I believe the beta will be on the PSN on April 17th and will become playable on the 21st. So go get your codes :)

I called GS. Anway the are taking pre-orders. Now if you want to get the online beta you have to pre order the limited edition verison... Which is 90 bucks. I'm getting 2 copies, Now if you buy that version they will call you in the coming days or weeks so you can pick up the beta. Since my ps3 is currently collecting dust this is an absolute must for me. I dont know if its a CD or some sort of code or number we have to register online in order to download. I hope this post helps.

I played the original MGO from day one until the server shut down. Man, I was obsessed with that game. I liked how small the community was because all the top players knew each other. Deathmatch and Sneaking was what I played most of the time.

Hopefully, SNE will be more balanced this time around. One person could single handily take down Naked Snake. In a room with top players, reaching the goal with the microfilm was nearly impossible. If Snake lost the RPG meta-game, it was GGPO. The weapons also need re-balancing. The AK-47 and XM16E1 were simply too good. Also, there were some fun-to-do exploits with certain weapons such as the Mosin Trap.

Saga DVD and the beta are two different things. Yes you can get the standard version and get the saga dvd. But if you want to get the online beta you have to get the limited edition version plus it comes with the saga dvd. I'm just trying to keep everyone informed.

Indeed the XM16E1 was really damn good. I scrubbed it out a lot with that weapon. Good Times. I miss this game I was gonna get back into it if it wasn't for them closing the server.

MGO2 will definitely be taking up my time. Probably more than other good games this year.

Yeah we should start planning now/over the weekend. An #irc channel or AIM chatroom would help speed up getting games together. The beta is only going to be for a couple weeks, and while I'm sure it will be enjoyable to fuck around in pubs, I would get much more enjoyment out of it playing it with SRK/friends.

I have the PS2 USB headset I bought for Subsistence MGO, hopefully it will work well enough in the beta. Eventually I'm going to grab that MGS4 Bluetooth headset for the retail game.

I must have seen that about 200 times. I cant even get past the first page anymore. I was so close to registering last night. If it werent for their retarded password and lower case criteria making me redo things, then I could have already been relaxing while I patiently wait for monday. You just gotta be patient and it'll probably pick up. Should take a couple of hours. Just leave it on and do something else until it finishes.

*Update* For the people who are having issues getting Konami ID's.

As alot of you know the Konami ID-site is having problems at the moment, making it hard to register. I stumbled upon this nugget of gold during my daily roaming of the Internets

"Guide: How to get a Konami ID within mins

* You need Firefox
* Goto Tools Add ons, Get Extensions
* Find the AutoFormer add on and install it and restart the browser
* goto hxxps://id.konami.net and click register (Blue button on the left) - might take a while but keep trying
* Enter your date of birth and go to edit in Firefox menu and find AutoFormer, click Save all fields - this will now save you entering the DOB again if you need to come back to this stage
* click next
* Wait until the terms show before clicking next again
* fill out the entire form carefully, don't rush you have all the time in the world. Make sure you don't use capitals in username, and make sure game id password is all numbers. Make sure phone number and postcode have no spaces
* now before clicking next click edit again and AutoFormer>save all fields
* Click next, it'll probably fail due to time taken to complete the form. Don't worry
* Start again, this time your DOB should be auto inserted click next to terms, click next to form, click next to confirmation click next and you're done - SIMPLE!!!


If you get kicked out at any point, start again. The point is you don't have to keep re-inserting data and this gives you a MUCH higher chance of getting through before timeouts.

I'm not doing it as a matter of principle. They're cutting down the user base by over ten fold with this nonsense. I'm still not even clear what the difference is between the GAME ID and the KONAMI ID. that site is so filled with poor explanations and engrish I just won't tolerate it. make sure the download limit size option is turned off (found this info on the playstation forum), i did this friday night and downloaded the update in 2 hours.

if you want to take a break downloading you can (be sure to use the p2p option and not the http), you'll start right back where you left off.

Follow the instructions on your voucher coupon in your Metal Gear Saga 2 case, and hope your code is 12 digits lol. I would tell you step by step, but I'm at work right now and I can't remember the proper name of the menus.:sad:

Got to play a little bit before I went to work, was totally digging it. It's definitely not going to be for everyone. Few thoughts:

- Knife is awesome. Holding down L1 puts you in a knife 'stance'. Hitting primary fire hard (R1) is the same old insta-stab deal, if not you do the MGS3 style knife attack sequence. R2 shocks them. I have the Knife Mastery skill which I guess allows me to move while I'm doing the slicing technique.

- You can find the Oil Drum/Barrel in the levels. I managed to knock a few people over with it, but then their teammates shot me in the head while I was vomiting. Haha.

- CQC seems good still. Though a word of warning, when you throw people down with the slam, they are on their backs and are still able to aim and fire after a split second. Just like how in MGS4 Old Snake can wiggle around and fire while on his back. When I first saw this from a distance I thought somebody had the Last Stand perk from CoD4, no joke. It wasn't really a problem for me though as you can lock on to opponents while they're on the ground and just do the stab attack. Yeah, no more having to take lag into consideration and time the insta-stab as they're getting up like in MGO 1. I managed to inject people with the Nanomachine Hacking thing a couple times too. I couldn't figure out how to slit throats though.

The roll attack didn't seem to knock people over, they just sort of flinched. I like this change.

- At one point in a match a bunch of the soldiers in a clump sat around stunned, for a good 5-7 seconds. They looked just like the PMC soldiers in the E3 2007 MGS4 trailer after Liquid Ocelot "Activates It". I don't know if this was the result of a Stun Grenade or that SOP. Destabilizer or what. All I know is the 3 of them got dropped fast by my shank.

- There's enough random boxes scattered around the level to make the C.Box item effective still.



Hopefully I'll be able to play more later today. I was on the NeoGaf server earlier, but I'd love to get in some games with everyone here too.

Also in case you guys are fond of CQC, grab someone in a choke hold, crouch with X, let go of R1 for a split second, then hit left or right on the analog stick while simultaneously hitting R1 again. You'll flip them over and do the Judo choke-out. It's especially fun if while you're doing that, one of your buddies executes the dude.

Man, it's funny as hell when you get in a box and the enemy just walks by you without a second thought and you sneak up on them and throw them down.

I'm making a lot of people go to sleep too, its a good strategy when there is a good player on the other team, to take him out for a couple seconds. I got tops for 3 games so far but I'm still getting used to it. I keep switching between my guns to reload and get killed in the process.

I do have some Q's though.. thanks Dr. Stormlocke for the info on how to take the people down on the ground.

Yeah I'm almost positive you have to level up either CQC or Knife Mastery to be able to slit throats. Possibly both?

I'm using: Increased Movement, CQC Mastery, Knife Mastery, Scanning.

I might switch out Scanning for Trap Mastery though. Scanning will be more useful later when people actually have a grasp on the game mechanics and link up with S.O.P, for now it doesn't seem worth it.


As you were saying CQC is useful to remove a player from the battlefield for an extended period of time. Just remember YOU are removed from combat so to speak for awhile as well. I find it extremely helpful in capture missions or ticket based deathmatch to have a buddy roll with you and cover you while you Judo-Chokeout. If you can micro-manage killing him before he wakes up, while still being effective in guarding a point etc, it's definitely worth it. Ideally you're removing a player from their side for a longer period of time than if you outright killed them, while being able to perform other tasks in the meantime.

Not a fan of FPS in general but this is definitely something different. Alot more sneaking involved which is cool and you do some tricky stuff. Had problems with Noob friendly auto aiming though and might try something different next time, over the shoulder or First person.

It's an option that the host can turn on. The guns only work on a game to game basis, you don't keep them afterwards. It's like buying weapons from the menu after accruing enough funds in Counter-Strike.

I'm just waiting for people to start understanding the team concept a little bit more. I hate going into TDM or other team games, putting in work and still getting the shaft because everyone else is sloppy as fuck. People barely even link up. Anyways the skills I use are assault rifle, CQC, Movement and the one the shows where the enemy is to your team if you shoot at them.

Drebin points are awesome, but it's hard finding servers the have them enabled for some odd reason.

Right, so I use:

Assault R Mastery 1 (I have it at 2, but that takes two slots, so fuck that)
Handgun Mastery 1
Quick Movement 1
Enhanced Lock-On 1

I also have my R2 set to switch between two guns back and forth. It makes my grenade and trap game weaker, but it helps for gun fights.

Yeah this game is pretty damn awesome IMO. The Auto Aim isn't nearly as great as everybody thought, so it balances out in the end when you realise you can't get head shots with it and has very limited range. And god do I love the cardboard box. The random boxes placed everywhere makes them actually decently effective to use.

Only problem I have with this game is that it's slow. The cover system is ungodly slow unlike the last MGS games. It takes awhile for your character to move while under cover and somewhat seems useless not to mention trying to shoot in cover being slow too. The characters also run pretty slow even with fast movement equipped.

But that's what the beta is for, so I'm sure that stuff will be addressed since it's the main complaint about this game now. Everything else is fine tho. Gonna play some more after I get off work.

Precision and chicanery are the names of the game here. The old MGO was actually a lot faster and had a strong auto-aim (as well as a far more retarded kill cam that lasted WAY too long), so I actually consider the slow speed fixes from before.

Anyway, I find that I have a very easy time killing morons who think they're CQC ninjas or some shit with auto-aim and strafing, but that's kind of how I play the game anyway.

I had the same problem. All you have to do is download it via HTTP for the 1.01patch.
It will download...if it gets an error exit the game and try again. It keeps the progress.
Took me four hours to download it. There are hardly any seeds so just do it that way.

When its finally complete download the 2nd patch 1.02 via peer to peer cause its smaller.
Only took me 5 minutes to download.

I know its a pain but trust me its well worth it...
Anyway I hope this helps.

You have to be really stealthy to even get someone in a CQC stance, and the knife thing seems a little cheap anyways, plus it will take all your slots lol. I wouldn't use it.

I just got Lvl 2 Assault Rifle and holy crap, it actually reloads in a decent amount of time and the gun isn't flying everywhere!!! I'm killing a lot more with this one so it's a keeper.
Got Lvl 2 fast movement but it didn't seem like it helped too much..

I was having so much fun last night. Knife + magazines are such a deadly combo. I've taken out groups using them, in TDM. :rofl: I'm probably halfway to lvl 3 knife mastery.

Someone asked about the SOP destab? It's what causes the whole team to go crazy. It's a support item you can buy when the Drebin points system is on. It's very expensive but worth it. Also, you have to be in their main base to use it. I've only seen it being used during capture games.

Oh man S.O.P Destabilizers are so much fun. 5,000 Drebin Points, but I have a blast using them. Sneaking past enemies and infiltrating their base is like a separate minigame. One time I was playing dead on my back next to their main square/HQ as two enemies spawn in. They ignore me and run by, I flip back over, L1+X roll toward, plant it, BOOM, proceed to go on a knifing spree for 30 seconds.

Though cruising with a teammate is always beneficial, I find that strat works especially well if you have a spotter with you.

Judo choke is R1 (hold to grab), crouch while still holding R1, Let go of R1 then hit left or right on the analog stick and hit R1 again.

No..

What I was doing was keeping shield in slot 1, then knife in slot 2. Run up to the opponent with the shield and when you are very close switch to the knife then L1 + R2 and you'll stun them, then crouch and knife to death. If there are too many people around just stun the person then run, or one-slash kill them.

Hard as it may sound, it actually works.

I like how I'm basically playing this game like it's Call of Duty 4. I set my FPS mode to memory, and can pretty much get headshots half of the time. I pretty much don't use auto-aim and 3rd person mode anymore.

This feature made the game ALOT better for me. And I've gotten use to the somewhat slow speed. Still haven't found a use for hiding behind cover with Triangle tho.

Sometimes auto aim is usefull when you're close to an enemy and they're behind you. Switch it on and it will auto point to the bad guy and take good damage. With the shotgun it's essential.

i dont know exactly. have you seen the metal gear solid 4 trailer, where all of the foxhound members get all woozy and fall down to the ground. i think that is what it is. basically the enemies just stand around and make weird noises and you can kill them.

They incapacitate the entire enemy team, no matter where they are on the map, for anywhere between 15-30 seconds (don't know quite yet). Remember in the E3 2007 trailer when the PMCs start groaning and they keel over in pain? It's like that. Opponents actually kind of sound like zombies while they're affected by this.

Yeah, you killed me a couple times, its all good though. When we work as a team, like partner up, we kick much more ass. Like that time where the guy grabbed you and I came up and threw him down and we pumped him full of lead.

There are lots of people playing this game like COD4 or Halo, just running and gunning all alone, but I think that makeing groups of 2 or 3 helps a lot and using a lot more sneaky tactics works.

This game is amazing!! Can't wait till the full thing so we can have more levels and maybe new weapons and stuff.

Played Snake mode.
Lots of fun. One guy plays as snake and is fitted with OtcoCam (predator styles) and two other teams go at it. If Snake gets the required number of dogtags he wins. So he has to sneak up on you, knock you out and then tap you for the tag. He's also got the Tranquilizer gun to help him out.

Unsure who gets allocated as snake whether it's just the host, the winner or random. Also if enough slots are full someone gets to be that little camera on wheels thing apparently. DIdn't see it for myself though.

Also dudes getting mad good at working to together. Had one guy run into a alley with me chasing him and then stabbed in the back by a knife guy popping out of the shadows. So it's good to see more SOP tactics popping up to take my scrubby ass out.

We've also got a new map. The middle eastern setting. My favorite stage so far.

Played as snake now.
Seems you can play as snake and just cruise around while you wait for players to join.

Snake has solid eye, That tracker thing you attack to people, Tranq Hand gun and tranq sniper rifle, Stun Knife, M9 rifle.

Snake is helluva fun. Didn't get his Octocamo to work though, maybe it was on by default only everyone else couldn't see me. The default camo is helluva cool just press Triangle against a wall and Checkered snake, goodtimes

Once players joined seems like snake was allocated randomly.

The Little camera thing is FAST owned me good. Looks like it has to work with snake since all it did was shock me and knock me out.

It's good to Europe getting some charity for a change, we get shafted in the land of PAL quite often. Take notes Capcom.

Turns out he has barely any kills but he runs a server teaching noobs how to use CQC and advertises the description as "Noobs come learn CQC from a top 3 ranked DM player" to get away with a bunch of easy points from stuns all day.:rolleyes:

Anyways, more thoughts. playing dead (belly up) and getting instant headshots as peope walk by is way too much fun. SOP on DM is bullshit. Why should I get to be a big target just for being in first place. It's an online STEALTH action game. Shouldnt I get to play smart and tactical like everyone else without some broken "balancing" mechanism ruining the match and making it difficult for whoever is winning (usually with skill) and making the match one big, random clusterfuck for first place. It's like fucking lightning bolts and blue shells on Mario Kart, but ten times worse. This better not be on the real game or it should at least be off by default. It pissed me off so much I sent a rant to the game masters in hopes that they actually read it and I'm not the only person thinking this way.

Oh and enemy exposure is great even without teams. At lvl 2 you can actually see their movements for like 5 whole seconds just by putting one bullet in them. It can even help with headshots in FPS view if the recoil makes it harder to find the head when you're bringing the gun back to head level.

Yeah, I don't really like the new emphasis on stunning. My ranking isn't so great because I don't stun people at all. I don't really care about ranking, though, so that's another thing.

Also, if any of you have seen my character, you can tell I made him with a real emphasis on stealth. There are some places where I can pretty much be completely invisible, except for my breathing.

I want to murder whoever thought it was a good idea to have R3 make you STOP shooting if you push it in a firefight. I've had at least 30 deaths where I couldn't shoot back because I pushed in the aim stick. GARBAGE.

The beta is fun but it's definitely it's "own" game and not very Metal Gear-y, I think. It's a good base for a fun game though. If anyone is Midwest or EC get at me (as Ghaleon.) cos I have a pretty decent connection to host.

I wish there was more incentive to play stun/MK22 style, but I just use M4/Assault Rifle 3/Fast M 1 all day because it's better results in game and for score. They should balance the scoring system better, because headshot + kill is way too much score (even though I guess I won't argue while it's helping me a shitton). And make the team skills better & give more points for team assisting.

Has everyone figured out on here by now that running with your main weapon put away is top-tier fast :) I see almost no one online who does that yet. Speed up!

Yeah, we have a pretty balanced type of clan. Me with grenades, kvit with his assault rifle skills, you with your knifing/sneaking skills, and i'm sure the other guys have specialities but I haven't played with them yet. We could totally rule Metal Gear online!!!!

I was just in a game and we were in G.G. and some guy CQC'ed one of our team members and was holding him like a hostage. There were 3 other guys on our team standing and ready to shoot but wouldn't cause they didn't want to team kill. I had an SVD cause I wanted to get this bastard in a tower so I stood behind all the guys on my team, aimed, and got him right in the head. I swear, i took me back to the good ol' days of SILENT SCOPE !!!

Man, headshots are pissing me off !!! I shoot people for an hour and they get off one handgun shot to my head and I'm dead. Or I spend 10,000 on the grenade add-on to the M4 and I get headshot and don't even get to use it!!

Oh and I just realized that first person mode is way more effective than over the shoulder. Now I've gotta do something about that damn recoil !! lol

I'm level 5 -- it doesn't do anything different for you that I can tell. I don't even know what the levels hinge on, since I've seen people w/ less kills than deaths at L5. What do they mean even? I can't figure out if it's just time related, either.

Sneaking mode is awesomely fun. I should have won the one time I played as snake but it took me awhile to figure out how to get dogtags from stunned/sleeping enemies.

The new stage is awesome to play too. There's a roof where u can lay down and use the billboards for cover. It's a pretty awesome sniping spot. The only things that have a realistic chance of killing you are other snipers and probably well thrown grenades.

Man I duno just yet about MGO. There are parts of the game I love, and parts I really hope receive more polish and attention for the final version. I think my biggest complaint is the feel of the combat, it feels a bit sloppy to me.

I understand the pace and movement is slower in this game cause it's more methodical than other shooters, but it's almost too sluggish in some aspects. I'm also not down with how many shots to the chest it currently takes to kill someone. I understand it should take a fair amount of shots to drop someone without hitting the head so that it isn't too easy to kill someone, but right now the damage on head to chest ratio seems too skewed.

I am loving the character customization from aesthetics all the way down to skills though, and those two traits alone will probably have me devoting some of my shooting time away from CoD to the final version of this. I just don't think MGO is reaching its potential right now I guess, and apparently there are too many similarities to the original MGO with subsistance, even down to the flaws.

Question: When you successfully get an enemy with an enemy locator grenade, does it display on the SOP system for the rest of your team? Even if it doesn't I still love these things lol.

haha yeah theyre pretty easy. this is really the first shooter that ive played without a mouse and keyboard. headshots up close are pretty easy, but when you only have a little crack to see through and someone is gonna run past, its nearly impossible.

Man I was having a blast camping the three story building in the Middle East level. Magazines on the staircase & near the window on 3f where people come in.

People were getting pissed. If only they knew how you can equip the cardboard box and run right over them.

Boxing it up in the far right narrow alleyway is also a good strategy for Knife/CQC'ing.

NVG increases the framerate dramatically, making the game a lot smoother. You can use them to reveal MKII but I was wearing them and I saw snake disappearing before my eyes without any heat signature.

As for tips, it really depends on how you play. You have to know your own strengths and weaknesses and plan accordingly.

if dps are enabled m4 with silencer,scope (imo better then lens) and grip is just sex

If this SOP stuff lets you sometimes see if an enemy is around (by making them GLOW), then how is playing dead a feasible tactic?

OMG I love midtown maelstrom. Magazines + waiting in dumpster = god tier! Makes me feel like I'm playing the single player mode. Only those infamous guards are now actually real people! It's fun messing around with C4 on that map too. Set it on the back route, hide, wait for groups to come running by, detonate and watch them fly, run out and score a bunch of headshots while they're on the ground confused and whatnot. Now that's what I expect an online MGS game to feel like. The new idea for sneaking mode is awesome. It's like regular TDM with an extra MGS4 twist. The robot is broken, but man is Snake hard to play as sometimes.

Sneaking mission was really fun once I got the hang of it. I've won as Snake in a few minutes. I had a really good Mk.II partner. I stunned/slammed a few while he covered me as I grabbed their tags. I suggest taking cover on a wall as Snake instead of just going prone. It makes it easier to run when needed.

I've seen some players continue to be Snake when they won but it's never happened with me. Is it a server specific setting?

Random note: Have you guys seen someone get caught in a magazine while prone/crawling? It's hilarious.

Haha, yeah it's good stuff. Funny story: had two magazines down in the staircase on the Middle East level, guy gets stuck in it, Stun Knife him, drag him between the two magazines, pick him up to get his primary weapon. I proceed to pick him up again and he drops his support item, which was...

..more magazines. Dude was trapped in the staircase for a good 5 minutes or so. He was a good sport though and was laughing at the absurdity of it all.
