OK. Let me start by saying I could not believe my eyes when this happened.

THIS IS REAL
THIS IS NOT A JOKE
NOT A JOKE

I accidentally entered a code on my Arcade 3S setup (Supergun + TV) that lets you fight Gill every single stage. I was fiddling around with my joystick and the Start button didn't seem to be working. I hit it several times. I checked my wiring for problems, looked up, and all of a sudden:

It was First stage: Gill. 2nd stage: Gill. 3rd Stage: Gill. 4th Stage, I tried to switch characters after losing (to Dudley), and it went back to normal opponents. So, switching characters seems to nullify the code.

I started out as IBUKI somehow. I don't recall even seeing the character select screen.

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I DID THIS. But now we know it's definitely in the game.

To clarify: this is ARCADE 3rd Strike, Japanese version A.

I've played on an LCD for 2 years. The response time is near-flawless (6ms). My scaler eliminates the rest of the lag.

Again, this is 100% real.

I like how you say you had no idea it was going to happen or how you did it, and despite the fact that it skipped character select, you had your camera ready within 3 seconds of the opponent select screen for a perfect picture. nice.

most people now have cameras... in their phones OR EVEN in their apartments near their computing/gaming shit! you might not be able to believe it but even I have a camera in my phone. I have friends that have cameras in their phones, too.

That's because I lost to Gill on the first stage, and then continued with Ibuki. The code was only nullified when I switched characters. Sorry for not making that clear the first time.

You can verify this in the 'Final Results' screenshot, where you can see that I continued three times. I used one of those continues on the first stage.

If your friends can get their phones out, select the camera option, hold their hands straight, and take a picture all in the span of less than three seconds on reaction, then they should have been cowboys. I'm betting they can't, and you should just shut the fuck up. It's hard to be a smart ass when you're as dumb as my dick. Maybe next time.

Awesome discovery!
This is great news for advanced players to complete the game on 1 credit. I wonder if the final Gill will have gotten tougher gradially and finally the toughest form.
This must be in the DC, ps2 and xbox version as well.
If not I predict TS prices going up!
I actually have a feeling that all games are filled with codes, but that the codes never leave Japan or in some cases even the programmers.
Great find thanks for the pics. Great stuff. I'd suggest this thread be stickied until proven false. Does the poster have a bad record here?

Funny thing about that: ever since that song, mothers have been very careful about not letting their babies grow up to join that profession...and ever since the movie, lots of older dudes have been avoiding it like the plague.

To offer a possible explaination as to what's happening, each character has a value related to them, and Gill is specifically value 0. Thus, if for some reason the battle lineup data is blanked or otherwise not set by the game, you'll always fight character 0 for every match. Thus the Gill-fest.

I noticed that myself when I was searching out the character modifier codes in New Generation, KFM.

But what I'd like to know is WHY Capcom did things like that for this series. In 99.999999% of other fighting games, the internal order goes:

Normal characters,
Bosses,
Hidden characters (see MKII and 3 for good examples), and then
Fake characters (again, UMK3's Rain is 'officially' 1B, but trying to actually access the value makes the game crash)

Of course, we ARE talking about the same company that used only EVEN numbers for their character values in the Vs. series...

Fun fact: In alot of cases, the character select screen ordering is by these internal values as well. The best way, then, to figure out 'who goes where' is to start at 01 (in MAME, searching for 01 also finds 00 as well) and then count characters from the select screen in order. This is why you get the funky ordering in the SNES WW hacks that enable bosses.

Anyway, any insights to this phenomenon?

Kung Fu Man

Well the reason Gill is 0 is actually kinda a given: he was designed solely to "advertise" the CPS-3 hardware capabilities with his whole dual sides thing, so it makes sense they developed him first. Alex followed, being the intended protagonist of the series, then everyone else

Any reason beyond that...well, capcom has never been uniform. They make their sprites at 640x480 scale, but used 384x224 hardware to show them. Not to mention the insistence of 144 for a maximum life value in many of their fighting games (even in CvS2, 14400 is the middle ground value for player life)

3s can be random sometimes. Some of the things I've seen a 3s board do that were nothing but ordinary. Here's a few that I've personally experienced

-Yun's GJ meter started filling beyond 1 stock, although you can only activate once and it's gone.
-got KOed by Elena's Brave Dance combo (hit) but the win symbol was a "C"

I had this happen to me months ago on a CPS3 emulator. I thought it was a glitch from the emulation but apparently not. I set the emulator to free play and picked Ibuki after I beat the game with Ken and it happened.

I took a screen shot because I thought it was funny and thought nothing of it.

Most glitches are fixed in the revision, so if this is a glitch it is most likely not in the revision.

Reminds me of the Hell of Gouki mode in SFEX. Where you get to Gouki, 2nd player joins in, beats you, you challenge him again win, and you start off at the beginning facing Gouki for each match.
