View Full Version : Looking for a good first car

As the title expresses, I'm looking to buy my 1st car. I'm poor so the car has to be used, durable, decent looking (no 1988 camry or ugly boxy shit like that) and has to cost under $2,500.00.

Any suggestions?

old corolla or civic really.

EDIT: you're gonna have slim pickings for 2500, I'd just focus on the durability part and any old corolla or civic will still be good.

I have a Grand Am as my first car, and it seems pretty good to me. Don't know how SRK tiers it, though, so I can't really say it's great or not (yet).

Toyota Corolla (from '93 up since you don't like boxy cars) is your best bet. If you want a sportier car then get the Nissan 240SX.

Toyotas are damn near bullet proof, IMO more than Hondas.

Try to find an old Tiburon. I know a kid who dropped around $2500 on his first car, and that was it. My girl has an 06 Tiburon GT.

Try getting a Honda CRX or a Civic. You can never go wrong with a Camry or a Corolla (year 93 and up if you don't want the boxy styles.)

I have to say Civics also, I bought a 96 silver 5-speed CX hatch for $2000 and the plus is that I can get about 35mpg and they are very easy to maintain.

Get a Geo Metro hatchback if gas mileage is top priority. It's very good if you live in large cities because of its small size. Although a bit underpowered (55 base horse power) they can be fun to drive and can last a while. The main flaw of this car is that it doesn't have the survivability of cars like the Corolla or the Civic. If treated well, however, it can last quite some time. The Blue Book price for this car is at 600, but since they are sought after for their god like gas mileage be prepared to spend up to 2000 for one. I regret not fixing up my old Geo I used to have because when gas was 2.25 it only too like 20 to fill it up .

Old Toyotas last forever.

You should look into getting an old Corolla.

I got a '95 Nissan Sentra with less than 100,000 miles on it for about 2,500. The asking price was 3,500 but I offered 2,500 cash, today, straight into his pocket. Never pay asking price without trying to haggle!

so far it has held up quite well, i'm pretty pleased with it. 45 mpg on the highway, 27-30 in city

2.5K and you live in NY where rust can be a problem.......

'89~'93 Nissan 240SX
'89~'93 Mazda Miata
'83~'89 Nissan 300ZX Turbo or N/A
'89~'91 Nissan 300ZX N/A

Those are the best options IMO - don't be a pussy, Stay away from FWD you will thank me later.

You best bet is honestly a 240SX try and get one from '91~'93 and for 2.5K you might find a '95

He...lives in New York where winter can be a problem too. If you plan on driving in the winter months, you'll be sorry you bought a car with rear-wheel drive.
