World’s youngest professor can’t legally drink

Alia Sabur, a prodigy in many ways, says she wants to share her knowledge

Perhaps in Alia Sabur’s wildly advanced studies she came across a famous quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

“Knowing is not enough. We must apply,” the German writer once observed.

That could serve as explanation for what prompted the 19-year-old to become the youngest college professor in history.
Story continues below ↓advertisement

Armed with prodigious wisdom, Sabur told TODAY’s Ann Curry on Wednesday that knowledge is power — especially when sharing it.

“I really enjoy teaching,” said Sabur. “It’s something where you can make a difference. It’s not just what you can do, but you can enable a lot of other people to make their changes.”

Sabur, from Northport, N.Y., has clearly been ahead of the learning curve since an early age.

She started talking and reading when she was just 8 months old. She had elementary school finished at age 5.

She made the jump to college at age 10. And by age 14, Sabur was earning a bachelor’s of science degree in applied mathematics summa cum laude from Stony Brook University — the youngest female in U.S. history to do so.

Her education continued at Drexel University, where she earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering.

With an unlimited future ahead of her, Sabur directed her first career choice to teaching. She was three days short of her 19th birthday in February when she was hired to become a professor at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea.

This distinction made her the youngest college professor in history, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, beating the previous record held by Colin Maclaurin in 1717.

Maclaurin was a student of physicist Isaac Newton. Sabur said she is merely gravitating toward putting what she has learned to good use.

“I really feel I can help a lot of people,” she said.

At Konkuk University, Sabur said she will take part in classroom instruction, but will also focus on research into developing nanotubes for use as cellular probes that could help aid in cures for diseases.

Although she doesn’t start until next month, Sabur has taken up teaching math and physics courses at Southern University in New Orleans, which is still struggling from the devastation left in Hurricane Katrina’s wake in 2005.

“Some people come and they do Habitat for Humanity and they build houses, but I don’t think I would be very good,” she said. “So I tried to do what I’m good at. I was particularly interested in this university because they are still in trailers after Hurricane Katrina. And I thought it could be something I do to help.”

In New Orleans, Sabur is old enough to teach, but not to join her fellow professors in a bar after work. In Korea, where the drinking age is 20, she might have more luck. In traditional Korean culture, children are considered to be 1 year old when they are born, and add a year to their age every New Year instead of their actual birthday, so in Korea Sabur is considered 20.

Varied interests
On top of her unprecedented academic achievements, Sabur has a black belt in the Korean martial art of tae kwon do and is also a music prodigy. She has been playing clarinet with orchestras since her solo debut at age 11, playing with recording artists Lang Lang and Smash Mouth.

“You can reach a lot of people with music,” Sabur told Curry. “It’s never been really a hobby to me. It’s always been on equal par with my academics.”

So is there anything Sabur can’t do?

Well, apparently she struggles with basketball and with long writing and admits to sometimes being absentminded.

In fact, sometimes she forgets just how special she really is.

“Well, I know that what I’ve done is special and I think about it,” she said. “But sometimes I forget, because I’m used to it and I don’t think about it all the time. Actually, sometimes it takes other people to remind me a little bit.”

Graduating college at 14 summa cum laude, then her Ph.D. at 18, and a prodigy of several different elements, I have to say I'm humbled. I wish we could bottle up whatever she has and dispense it in vending machines.

True, but I don't believe that a severe distinction would be made on the level of neo-nazi imperialism, which is what I felt was being implied.

Humans alway try to classify and quantify themselves, but if there is a set societal standard similar to how current "normal people" have in the future, then the world wouldn't be that different- only smarter.

If you look at the intellectual growth of the western world since the 1950s you'd notice that the acquisition of knowledge for the average citizen has grown exponentially. People now need to learn more to fit into this modern world, but the process has been natural and relatively unnoticed.

Actually, you're thinking of a normal teacher. Commonly a person in the teaching profession who holds a four year degree in teaching and education, or an assoc' degree + teaching certifications. These are what you are more likely to find at smaller private schools and general public schools for 30K.

This girl in the article however, is a professor. Professors are more along the lines of individuals who hold a PhD. You are going to find these 90% of the time teaching at Universities. They start out between 50 and 55K. With more experience, the pay rises. Professors near 20 years of experience is banking about 95K per year.

And I believe that, because obviously you're taking the right attitude about this. The exact same tactics that work on other women would work on her. That's why nerds like fishjie are going to have the same amount of trouble as they have with all women, or even more trouble, because they're even more inferior since they can only offer a crappy Engineering degree as their worth as human beings.

But this girl, she is seriously a waste. All people that have this ability that choose to "teach" are a serious waste of space. She should be using that ability to actually contribute to society and help solve the myriads of problems that we have, rather than getting some sort of ego boast by "teaching" people. Figure out how to cure cancer, don't tell other people what cancer is, based on prior people's research, or even your own research that isn't yielding a beneficial result.

I've also come to realize something important from seeing this. Some of you get humbled by it, but I see it a different way. She's succeeding because of god given talents, not something she's done on her own or worked to. People hate on pro athletes for making money because of their talents, but then turn around and praise someone like her? Whether it be intellectual or physical, the people that are the best at something generally possess something the rest of us simply do not have. Things like this make me believe in religion more and more, and also make me think I'm way better off being a fighter than a lawyer. I might be kinda dumb, but I am rather absurdly strong and fast for my size. Then again, GSP has that height on me too, so maybe it's a lost cause.

Teaching helps people, and it shapes the minds of future problem solvers. So having a child prodigy as a teacher is just a bonus for the students.

Plus, she doesn't just teach. She is also doing, "groundbreaking work towards developing nanotube-based cellular probes for use in medical research. This will allow the ability to measure the reaction of nano-materials injected into individual cells. She is also interested in a venue to develop non-invasive optical blood glucose meters for people with diabetics."

Decent start for a 19year old...

I've also come to realize something important from seeing this. Some of you get humbled by it, but I see it a different way. She's succeeding because of god given talents, not something she's done on her own or worked to.

People praise her for using her talents to acquire information and for making something out of herself -- something most people with average intelligence and average genetics don't even bother to do.

People hate on pro athletes for making money because of their talents, but then turn around and praise someone like her? I didn't watch the video, I don't have the time for that. I went by the article and the responses in this thread, which clearly focus on her educational accomplishments, and rate actual contribution as not even worthy of being commented on. Those are terrible priorities imo. Doesn't change that she apparently is working towards making use of her talents, but it does speak to how off the mark society and the media are.

As to average people not making use of their abilities, I disagree. You just don't notice because they're not succeeding to the level that someone with greater abilities can. From my experience, those that are far more average in ability tend to work harder than those that have greater ability. Usually the more intelligent someone is, the more likely they are to just try and slide through life with less effort. This is a common occurrence in pretty much everything, outside of intelligence. In sports there are a lot of great talents that don't put the practice in that they need to in order to get to the next level. In sports, this can change when they're looking for a new contract or get destroyed by someone that's less talented but works harder. Intellectually this is unlikely to happen, as there are always excuses and most of the time anything an intellectual does isn't really quantifiable.

As to the last question you had, I didn't use the phrase "god given" for talent, but it's a common term, and I kind of believe it. It's really a religious distinction when you get there, and you can't discuss that type of thing on SRK though. If you really want to, you should probably PM me, and I'll most likely ignore your PM. DOWNEY, Calif. - With the end of another school year approaching, college sophomore Moshe Kai Cavalin is cramming for final exams in classes such as advanced mathematics, foreign languages and music.

But Cavalin is only 10 years old. And at 4-foot-7, his shoes don't quite touch the floor as he puts down a schoolbook and swivels around in his chair to greet a visitor.

"I'm studying statistics," says the alternately precocious and shy Cavalin, his textbook lying open on the living room desk of his parents' apartment in this quiet suburb east of Los Angeles.

Within a year, if he keeps up his grades and completes the rest of his requirements, he hopes to transfer from his two-year program at East Los Angeles College to a prestigious four-year school and study astrophysics.

'Wormholes' a primary interest
One of his primary interests is "wormholes," a hypothetical scientific phenomenon connected to Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. It has been theorized that if such holes do exist in space, they could — in tandem with black holes — allow for the kind of space-age time travel seen in science fiction.

"Just like black holes, they suck in particulate objects, and also like black holes, they also travel at escape velocity, which is, the speed to get out of there is faster than the speed of light," Cavalin says. "I'd like to prove that wormholes are really there and prove all the theories are correct."

First, he has statistics homework to finish. Later, he'll work with his mother, Shu Chen Chien, to brush up on his Mandarin for his Chinese class. Then it's over to the piano to prepare for his recital in music class.

His father, Yosef Cavalin, frets about the piano-playing, noting that his only child recently broke his arm pursuing another passion, martial arts. He has won several trophies for his age group.

"Finals are coming and everything and he cannot play with both hands. He'll just try to play with the right hand," he says. "I don't know how his grade's going to be in piano. It worries me a bit."

If past success is any indication, his son will find a way to compensate. Cavalin, who enrolled in college more than a year ago, has maintained an A-plus average in such subjects as algebra, history, astronomy and physical education.

The youngest?
College officials couldn't immediately say whether he is the youngest student in the school's 63-year history. Among child prodigies, Michael Kearney, now 24, is often cited as the world's youngest college graduate, having earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of South Alabama at age 10.

Cavalin's professors can't recall having a younger student in their classes.

"He is the youngest college student I've ever taught and one of the hardest working," says Daniel Judge, his statistics professor. "He's actually a pleasure to have in class. He's a well-adjusted, nice little boy."

Cavalin was an 8-year-old freshman when he enrolled in Guajao Liao's intermediate algebra class in 2006. By the end of the term, Liao recalls, he was tutoring some of his 19- and 20-year-old classmates.

"I told his parents that his ability was much higher than that level, that he should take a higher-level course," Liao says. "But his parents didn't want to push him."

Avoid calling him a genius
Cavalin's parents avoid calling their son a genius. They say he's just an average kid who enjoys studying as much as he likes playing soccer, watching Jackie Chan movies, and collecting toy cars and baseball caps with tiger emblems on them. He was born during the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac.

Cavalin has a general idea what his IQ is, but doesn't like to discuss it. He says other students can achieve his success if they study hard and stay focused on their work.

His parents say they never planned to enroll their son in college at age 8, and sought to put him in a private elementary school when he was 6.

"They didn't want to accept me because I knew more than the teacher there and they said I looked too bored," the youngster recalls.

His parents home-schooled him instead, but after two years decided college was the best place for him. East L.A. officials agreed to accept him if he enrolled initially in just two classes, math and physical education. After he earned A-pluses in both, he was allowed to expand his studies.

"He sees things very simply," says Judge, his statistics teacher. "Most students think that things should be harder than they are and they put these mental blocks in front of them and they make things harder than they should be. In the case of Moshe, he sees right through the complications. ... It's not really mystical in any way, but at the same time it's amazing."

Oh snap it's Near! I give him MAJOR PROPS for trying to prove the existence of Wormholes and other theoretical space phenomena, we might hear about him in a few years from now.

Too bad that the father sounds like a stereotypical anal-retentive douche who probably pressures his son a lot.

Something I've noticed about child prodigies:

-Always come from 2 parent households.

-Musically inclined.

-Good temperament, passive.

I wonder if there's a genetic basis for these behaviors, perhaps kids with prodigy potential might be born in broken homes where their intellect cannot be fostered.

This kid is going to end up rapidly expanding into an enormous protoplasmic blob that will crush us all.

Meh, she is not that bad looks wise. Looks like a average nerdy kind of girl to me. Nothing really wrong with that. I actually enjoy dating a women with a brain. I consider myself (at times) a pretty smart guy, and one of my biggest pet peeves is a woman who is a dumb shit.

My current girl may have the common sense of a lemming, but book smart wise she is amazing. Call me odd, but I actually like having serious conversations with my girl.

Props to this girl becoming a professor so young. She just has to work twice as hard though to gain the respect of her students. She may have to be super bitch for a while until people get used to the idea that she is really a professor. If not, they will walk all over her.

If I remember correctly, Gattaca was a movie where citizens were tiered and discriminated based on genetic superiority and inferiority.
And that post you quoted was a direct (literally) reply to post #31 and not you, but enough of this exchange of who-meant-what.

Geniuses like her make lousy teachers because they never had to struggle to learn.

This is a very good point.

These geniuses should figure out a way so that the rest of us don't have to learn or work. We can all use their brainpower instead. Like from that virtual reality world in Star Ocean 3, where everybody played games all day since nobody had to work, except for those shopkeepers and the information people at the terminals.

After reading it, I agree. Just WOW, I like the line in that last paragraph mentioning some school work are made harder than they really should be.

So are you still the ringleader of NO ASS?

I get what your saying especially knowing you have this thing for darwinism but what you don't seem to get is that people have a choice to do whatever the fuck they want, if the girl wants to limit how beneficial she can be to the human race who are we to stop her? Sometimes judging by your posts it sounds like your fantasy to live in a world like in the movie equilibrium.

I'm sorry if i'm wrong and just reading too much into it but whenever I read a post from you it sounds like you go out of your way to condescend all of srk by calling us nerds and that your somehow above all of that yet post on the same message board.

this hasn't been posted in a while (http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p180/metallica2k1/internet_serious_business.jpg)

I didn't watch the video, I don't have the time for that.

But you have time to make several detailed paragraph long posts?:wonder:

BTW don't interpret any of this as any kinda of flame or some dumb shit like that i'm just making some observations is all.
