How the hell do you go about getting your hands on an "Advanced readers copy" of a novel before the finished product is released? Is it more expensive?

This is just an absolute wild guess, but I would say there would only be a limited ammount to give out and you'd most likely have to get in through book clubs or some form of exlusive association. Kind of like getting Evo DVD's early for being Premium, in a not so similar fassion...

You could get accreditation as a book critic, which probably isn't the easiest route.

None in particular...I'm just kinda tired of seeing people on messageboards discussing advance copies, when the final is months away. Especially books by Kim Harrison, and Jim Butcher.

When i worked at waldenbooks, we would get them from the publisher all the time for us to read and suggest to customers. Most of the time they would be given away to our regulars. But you can try getting a part time job at a bookstore, but we had no say in what books we got.

I bet youd get a better answer if you asked them.
If you want ARCs, start a blog and review lots of books. Develop enough traffic, and getting advanced copies isn't too tough.

I'm part of a program where they give you advanced copies for free if you write a review :D
