View Full Version : Metallica now wants to go online. Would you support this?

This doesn't even have to apply to Metallica. This can apply to any other band who's been anti-file sharing, has fought to shut down online music, and suddenly decides to jump into the online scene when bands like Nine Inch Nails do it and have success.

http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/27/1458228

"Metallica, once strongly opposed to file-sharing, has hinted at going 'free' (http://www.zeropaid.com/news/9440/Metallica+Now+Embraces+File-Sharing%3F) in the style of NIN and Radiohead. Having heard success stories about releasing music online, Metallica has decided it wants a piece of the action (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/20379823/lars_ulrich_weve_always_been_fiercely_independent_ and_controlling/2). Radiohead, as a pioneer of online 'pay what you want (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/10/01/164234&tid=141)' music, has shown the world it is possible to profit by releasing music online, but would not post those profits. NIN (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/03/03/1420251&tid=141), on the other hand, has reported at least $1.6 million in revenue (http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/03/nine-inch-nai-2.html). In hindsight, many people remember Metallica as the band that helped shutdown Napster (http://features.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/04/16/2139241&tid=141). I purchased the NIN album, after many years of free downloads of the NIN collection, to help support the band. Would you buy a Metallica online album despite their former views (http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/05/26/1251220&tid=141)?"Personally, I wouldn't support them. Not just because they haven't put out anything worth listening to since the Black Album, but because of how they started this whole anti-file sharing mess to begin with, and now want to cash in on something other bands are doing instead of taking that step years ago. Just seems like greed to me.

Edit: I should've made the poll choices less vague. My bad.

I don't like Metallica so I don't care. Plus, they are all a bunch of old foggies. They weren't forward thinking enough when they were trying to rush napster down to hell and now they are playing catch-up.

Metallica supported free music from square one with underground tape trading in the 80s. Why they had a change of heart in the 90s, I don't know, but they appear to be reverting back to their original philosophy.

And who fucking cares if they haven't? Hey, free music.

I woulda gladly taken the black album, master of puppets, ride the lightning, kill 'em all and and justice for all for free, but they couldn't pay me to download the crap that was on st. anger.

god st anger was the worst fucking album. it was so bad i've been trying to pretend like it didn't happen.

and i'm afraid metallica has only succeeded in completely alienating me, so no, i doubt i would download their music and pay for it. NIN did things the right way.

I don't blame metallica for going after file sharing. Their music is their work and they do have a right to protect their financial interests by going after organizations that distribute their work for free.

*Continues to download music.

Nope, I was and still am kinda ticked that Metallica had to help ruin fire sharing. Besides that their recent music sucks.

Eh, I've already got the Metallica that I like. I have no interest in any of their recent efforts. Too little, too late.

It seems as if everytime that Metallica is named. Someone says "old metallica > new metallica". That's great, we know that. Thank you for adding absolutely nothing substancial to the conversation.

I added nothing substantial to the "conversation"?

OBJECTION!

old metallica>new shit

Your honor, please take a look at this evidence and you will clearly see the contradiction in the witness testimony as not everyone may be aware of pre-crisis metallica's greatness especially in comparison to their newer albums and I was simply informing those who did not know.

Also note in the court record the prosecution fails to grasp proper grammar.

The only Metallica albums I really like are Kill 'Em All and the No Life Til Leather demo tape. After that, they started trading their punkish intensity for pretentious sophistication. (Before NLTL, they sounded exactly like what they were: a bunch of metal nerds trying to be tough. But that's still better than old men trying to be artsy.)

That's not to say that the albums everybody loves to love (RTL, Puppets, Justice) are bad... but in them, the band members show themselves for the delusional old men they would eventually become.

How's that for "old Metallica > new Metallica"? Have I pushed the boundaries of fanboy douchebagginess to new limits?

Well, the fact that Metallica haven't put out a decent album since long before Napster just shows how irrelevant they are. Nobody is going to give a damn about anything they will have up for download, even if they never took a stand against file sharing. They should have just quietly bowed out like so many classic bands before them, only to get together every 5 years to celebrate their glory days, instead of pretending like they've been hot shit anytime after Master of Puppets.

*Insert generic srk response AKA tell you you're wrong because you disagree with my POV*

IMO anything they put out in the 80's plus their black album is enough to make them one of the best metal bands of all time.

Even though I said IMO it's still just a true fact because I said so.

NIN did things the right way.

Quoted for ridiculous truth (the Ghosts album had to be the best online music purchase I have ever made).

As for Metallica, I would be willing to "forgive" them if what they put out didn't sound like shit this time around as I ultimately don't care much about bands or band members as long as the music is good. Of course this does not apply if the band supports something particularly egregious.

To those of you who would be more familiar...

Did Radiohead and NIN have to go through record companies at all for those releases? It seems like for established bands, you could make a killing with online releases since labels tend to take over 90% of record sale profits.

I don't know about Radiohead, since I've never followed them, but Reznor is no longer signed to a major label. Ghosts was done independently.

Hell no I wouldn't support this. Those fuckin' tools complained so much when napster and other shareware came about. I hope they get permanently injured and can't play their instruments anymore, those faggots.

I remember their hella whining in the beginning. I wasn't a big metallica fan in the first place but their whining was incessant and pretty made me hate anything good about them. They suck now anyway.

First 5 albums fucking own hard...

So yeah, fuck those assholes and their mega fail/late attempt to e-hug the public with free downloads after holding the man's sack for years.

I bought the albums I want and downloaded all the other shit...then promptly deleted it.

After St. Anger, I doubt I would dl a full album, not even in torrent, unless heavily recommended.

Also, even if I do it's not going into hits on their site, this is a whinny bitch move.

This is almost as bad as them cutting their awesome metal hair.

i guess i'm the only one out there who really liked st anger (tho the drums did annoy me in some songs)

i mean relative to other metallica stuff it sucked

but if you just look at it on its own i think it was a decent album

i'd buy their new album whatever way it comes out. i'd prefer physical media because downloads never sound as good as a record or a CD and i know metallica isn't going to put a lossless version on their website to download

This is almost as bad as them cutting their awesome metal hair.Which is almost as bad as the utter gayness that was their hair in the early 80s. For a while, they looked nearly as girly as the hair bands they bagged on, until James grew that crazy mustache.

Except for Cliff. He was the locus of masculinity around which the fruitiness of the rest of the band swirled.

Lars licks balls. His drumming is the weakest part of their music.

Also, James's mustache ruled.

New Metallica album will destroy the charts, they'll have to build some new ones.
