locke the superman, macross dyrl, dagger of kamui, arcadia of my youth(captain harlocke), hokuto no ken....
who thinks these old anime are more styled and better than most new to colorful, cg assisted, digital colored, anime of the 2000's i do..the 90's was the last era of good hand drawn anime..such as macross2, ninja scroll etc..anyone agree?..lol

I think Bubblegum Crisis was in the late 80s.. and that shit was straight up golden. I loved it, but I can't find the originals anymore =( My friend had them on BetaMax and apparently the casettes went to shit before he had time to convert them over to VHS waaaaaay back in the day =( Too bad.
I could probably find them with a decent search on the internet... but the last time I tried, I kept coming up with the new Bubblegum Crisis 2010 or some shit, which paled in comparison to the original KNIGHTO-SABERS!
you could, yknow, ask this in the anime thread
and what does that skateboarding video have to do with anything

Did this really require its own thread?
Daggger of Kaimui = one of my favorite anime.
Others:
Here is Greenwood - Did ANYBODY else watch this show? The story was pretty gay sometimes, but it was such a good show.
Blueseed - I loved this show, even though I don't remember jack from it, except it was the first show I watched that featured pantyshots every episode and Kusanagi looked like a cat/vampire thing.
Yeah, old school anime was great when you could get ahold of it, but I usually ended up getting really bad, near ujnwatchable dubbed from my friends. DVD's FTW.

Hated this damn show. Not sure it was 80's.
If anyone knows where to DL Armored Trooper Votoms (AWESOME 80's series) lemme know...and OG Bubblegum Crisis too...
wow, this hasn't been merged with the anime thread yet?
anyway, anything directed by toyo'o ashida is typically epic and violently awesome. he directed the FotNS movie, tv anime, and the vampire hunter D oav. anything kenichi sonada is usually win too: see the aforementioned bubblegum crisis, gall force, riding bean/gunsmith cats (more 90's).

They released the Original Bubblegum Crisis and A.D. Police on DVD a couple of years ago. do a little searching and you can find them pretty easily.
I've been going back and picking up Ranma since the box sets finally hit about $35 a season.

I totally agree with the OP.. I like the look of some modern cg-assisted anime that throws in post-processing effects like shadows or grain.. but anime in the 90s was just 80s anime but digitally animated. The results were annoyingly clean, sterile and high-contrast. That era pretty much turned me off to anime before I ever started getting into it.
Then again I was never a giant fan of anime.. uh, I liked Venus Wars back in the day, although it was mad emo in retrospect.

im one of the assholes that likes the etchy hand drawn hokuto no ken better than the new crispy raoh gaiden and yuria densetsu...but im such a fan of the series i make an exception....also macross zero...but macross dyrl is the epitome of the style of animation i like..from mecha designs to character design etc..watercolors dont annoy me as much as cg shit..so hate me newbies..its all good...90's anime like wicked city, demon city shinjuku, were ok too..also vampire hunter d 2 was aight..but i like the first ones animation better...more emotion in it..the hand drawn dark shadowy style makes the violence look more hardcore..

Saint Seiya
That anime holds a SPECIAL PLACE in my heart.
Ha, I was just about to mention Votoms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl5xIPQ-dXI). Shit is too good.
And Ronin Warriors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjBGEswPDaY) was one of the first anime I ever saw, definitely one of the first that I thought was awesome. With all of the special attacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5nhAWvK2uU) I always thought it would be great if there was a side scrolling arcade game of RW, like the old Konami X-Men game.
I think I'd seen Vampire Hunter D and Robot Carnival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdOieEsk918) beforehand, but Ronin Warriors stands out as the first anime series I liked, since it ran in syndication like 5 days a week back in the summer of like...1995, here in Sacramento.
Good times...

Here is Greenwood is my favorite anime of all time. I went overboard on this...major geek style...got the VHS, DVD, and even the LD versions...got the soundtrack released in Japan and even the identical one released here (I wonder if that even sold haha)...didn't get the radio drama discs because well my Japanese is terrible. When I get back to America I will be buying all of the manga series, which is a lot longer than the anime. I bought the first volume of the Japanese manga but it took me way too long to get through it so I didn't really feel like getting the rest.
Urusei Yatsura is among my favorites as well. So hilarious, and the music is quite nice in a comfortable, slightly campy way. Hopefully AnimEigo offers this on DVD again ala some sort of boxset rehash...
Armored Trooper Votoms was really good but I only got to watch like 3 volumes from my local library haha...it would be cool if the rest of the series is available somewhere.

Naw man, Ronin Warriors couldn't touch that shit.
Honest to truth, there are loads of anime who exploits the "5 young brave warriors" archetype (kind of like a boy band, LAWL!): Ronin Warriors, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon.... maybe even G-Force if you wanna go way back.
But Ronin Warriors plotwise was more like Sailor Moon: fight some random villain dude, discover new POWAH, abuse said move, win to fight another day! Saint Seiya went a bit deeper than that, as everyone had contrasting personalities. For example, Phoenix Ikki was more like the Vegeta-ish antihero type: he would FUCK UP your shit for no given reason. Cygnus Hyoga had the momma boy thing going on, Andromeda Shun was the "Let's not fight!" wuss, etc.
Just my .33 in this matter.

You are sooo right
I have always compared Ronin Warriors and Sailor Moon
Hell I even made fan pics of them and wrote fanfics cuz they were so common.
As for Ronin Warriors and Saint Seiya
I'd say action and plot wise, yeh Saint Seiya was better, and infact much more visually pleasing, the transformations were top notch and when they did there powers it was like wow.
But I enjoyed Ronin Warriors much more, and that's when I fell in love with Matt Hill lol.

If I remember correctly, Saint Seiya came out before Ronin Warriors and they're both the same creator(I think, memory still fuzzy). And yes, Saint Seiya blows Legendary Samurai Troopers(JP title) out of the water clean and easy. They're both fun shows, but Saint Seiya just shits on the other.

Gunbuster - Aim for the Top was a fantastic series
Dominion: Tank Police was superb
City Hunter
Crying Freeman
Patlabor
Nausicaa and Kiki's Delivery service
Dirty Pair
Legend of Lemnear
and of course, the epic Legend of Galactic Heroes..
Dunno if it's cause I'm old and those were the "good ol days" or if that stuff was really that much better. But I've definitely got a soft-spot for those old shows.

Freeman from Crying Freeman is broken as all hell. The nigga in the manga is the strongest man in the world that can seduce women while fighting them, and he is the best assassin in the world too I think. That's fucking crazy yo.
Crying Freeman is nominated on most broken down to earth characters along side MacGuyver, Jack Bauer, Batman, James Bond, and Jigen from Lupin the 3rd.

All this newage 'next gen' anime can't hold a candle agains all the classic 80s anime. The ones that always come to my mind are Macross, Ashita no Joe 2, Lupin III (the non 80s ones, though), and Famous Detective Holmes [Sherlock Hound] (go watch it, it's Miyazaki!).
[edit] Other 80s anime guilty pleasures:
City Hunter
Record of Lodoss War
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Adventures of the Little Koala
Touch
Kimagure Orange Road
If we can add good early 90s anime, I'd include Slam Dunk!, Ping Pong Club, and Yu Yu Hakusho to that list.

My friend likes an old anime called A wind Named Amnesia. It's pretty awesome, about a strange occurance where everyone in the world simultaneously experiences sudden amnesia and all hell breaks loose. Really cool.

top o nerae! gunbuster
^fo sho
gunbuster will forever be my favorite anime ever. it seemlessly shifts from real robot genre to super robot without missing a beat. the characters are unforgettable and the drama of the second half is unparalleled (the part where noriko rallies kazumi back to fight again and calls her by her first name for the first and only time still gets to me). bonus points for being one of the only pieces of fiction to accurately portray time dilation and also being possibly the only time norio wakamoto has voiced a good guy.

when was samurai pizza cats made? 80s i think, but not sure...It premiered in Japan on February 1, 1990. It was in production during late 1989 at the latest (I have some production drawing scans that are dated to late '89). Saban's adaptation started production sometime during '91.

It's not about us being snobby, it's about you being annoying to other people. Yes, this is a forum about games, which you may find frivolous, but that doesn't give you a license to be a douchebag.
1. The edit button is not hard to find, and it's really easy to use.
2. You spammed your MySpace page in a thread where it is completely off-topic. There is a search function here (also really easy to use), so there's no reason you can't find threads where something like this is more welcome and relevant.
Bottom line, don't get mad at people for rightly pointing out that you're being a careless idiot.

Venus Wars was fucking awesome. I saw it on a VHS tape a friend bought from Suncoast, it was dubbed, but still fucking awesome.
"You just get in real fast and real close and WHAM!!! RIGHT IN THE BALLS! DADADADADADAADADADA!" Then that same guy was later on the battlefield shooting wildly at nothing and someone commented "You're even more dangerous than the enemy!" Hilarious shit.
Yeah, Venus Wars, Bubblegum Crisis, Dominion Tank Police, etc. that stretch was a good one. Even dubbed, they were pretty well done. In Wicked City, one of my favorites of all time... the spiderwoman sex scene still to this day is tattooed in my brain forever.

silverhawks?...i forgot about that..for some reason i dont consider that anime....but i did like it..starblazers was just too old style for me..cyborg 009 the movie was dope....i consider silverhawks the same type of style as centurions or jayce the wheeled warrior..8 man was aight but i think that ws 90's...the 90's era was cool..the only new anime i liked i can think of was cowboy bebop, kikaider was ok too...what about cutey honey or baoh...
what was the anime when the guy merged with a robot bird or some shit..kashan maybe i dont remember...but one thing i liked about 80's anime was the thin hair etch lines on the sideburns like roy fokker had...macross dyrl had the best animation and character design in my opinion and music..remember the 80's frankenstein and dracula anime..toei was the studio back then..or toho...

I guess you can look either way on Starblazers and silverhawks. they were to me anime, even if I didn't know what that was back then. Sorry. I don't have any idea about the one where the guy merges with the robot bird. the crazy designs that came out with anime just flipped the whole world of cartoons on its head in the best possible way. and yes, I consider cutey honey to be anime.

just quoted myself from the "cartoons you used to watch as a kid" thread. just a little info on those "anime-esque" cartoons that sprung up stateside during the 80's.
as a child in the 80’s i used to watch thundercats, silverhawks, mighty orbots, bionic six, robotech(i used to get in trouble sneaking to watch it on sci-fi at 4 in the morning lol), mask, gi joe, visionaries, transformers, voltron.....too many to list. i watched them when they first aired not when the eps were replayed on cn or other networks.

silverhawks intro
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mzAQu23t19A
various intro’s
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xKmys-Tys90
if some of the intro’s look “anime-esque” that’s because some were animated by the co formerly known as TMS(Tokyo movie shinsha) which handled the animation for more than just afew shows that ran during the 80’s in the states. the 80’s churned out some pretty kickass shows, twas truly a defining decade in the history regarding the evolution of cartoons, a time when the sci-fi/fantasy genre reigned supreme, a time when saturday mornings were something to look forward to(at least for myself lol.) the 90’s were more about toons, nickelodeon, simpsons, beavis&butthead, etc. not saying 90’s cartoons weren’t as good…..they were just different, emphasizing different values and visual style. both decades had there good, bad, and just flat out ugly...
yeah i know may/may not be anime but imo they were quality during their time. heh sorry somebody posted about silverhawks, it reminded me of all those 80's cartoons.=P

watch Super Dimension Fortress Macross "Do You Remember Love"..(DYRL)
its the whole 80's macross series storyline edited and smashed into 2 hours..made in 1984...the helmet design was better than the macross show, and some character deaths were different than the original series, but i like them better on the movie..Roy died like a chump on the series..he died heroic on the movie..so did Hayao Kakizaki...so peep that one..the animation is my fave ever..
