For a place that is 99% black, there is no thread about fried chicken!

Kinda inspired by the Burger Tiers thread, and I've been looking for a good fried chicken place in Norcal the past while.

What's the best place for FRIED CHICKEN, SRK?

GIVE ME YOUR FRIED CHICKEN KNOWLEDGE!!!

My ratings:

KFC is better than nothing, standard and acceptable 6.5/10

Pollo Loco, I haven't been there enough times to judge

Popeye's is pretty good 7/10

Roscoes... I WISH they had a Roscoes in Norcal!! I tried it earlier this year when I went to LA, and the waitress screwed up my order! I got 2 chicken wings+eggs+grits instead of half a chicken!!:mad: BUT THAT PLACE WAS SOO FREAKING GOOD!!!
9/10

You don't have it in the US, but in Canada they have Church's Fried Chicken. Really good stuff, but not as good as Roscoe's IMO 8/10

Gimme your tier list!!

Popeyes, Roscoes and Shakey's w/hot sauce and seasoning salt keeps a nigga full and fresh to def. El Pollo Loco is OK too. KFC...shieett, fuck that shit...only when I don't feel like driving and have extra cash in my pocket.

Oh yea, there's a Church's in Van Nuys btw.

When I asked my friends (who were uninformed) none of them have ever heard of Church's chicken. Also driving around Norcal, I never have seen one around here.

They used to have a Roscoe's in Norcal... in Oakland, off Broadway... I think there was one in Deep East Oakland too. Either way, I'm pretty sure both places went out of business about a decade ago.

Food for thought...at Popeye's order two chicken breasts and that's it. It's cheaper than any of the combos and you get more chicken. That's it. I never order combos at Popeye's anymore and end up spending a tad over $5.

As long as you have drinks at home and some seasoning, you're set. When you buy combos like breast and wing, leg and thigh, yadda yadda, you'll notice you spend about the same or slightly more. But, if you enjoy chicken, I say go for just two breasts. Mathematically all around, it's better IMO. I go to the one in Valley Village so much that they know my ass by name and they know what I want.

WOW. You've never been to Aunt Kizzy's. Turn in your LA card now. Seriously, you don't know what you've been missing, unless the quality dropped since the last time I was there (2001).

breast is the most meat volume-wise, but its typically the dryest piece of chicken. thighs and drumsticks are usually the juiciest (read: greasiest).

I tend to like supermarket fried chicken better than fast food.

(top) albertsons / QFC
(middle) fred meyer (I think they're called kroeger's outside of washington.)
(bottom) safeway

protip: get it fresh. automatic fail for being under the heat lamp for too long.

I don't know why some of you guys are hating on Church's Chicken.

Aww, man, Here are my Tiers for local and chain chicken jurnts in my town.

1: Jimmy's Chicken Shack- best fucking chicken ever, since before I could walk. Good biscuits, too. I think this is just a local chain to North FL.
2: Church's Chicken. Good shit. Louisiana hot sauce. Rice. Go go go go
3: Popeye's Chicken. Good seasoning. I can't stand anything on the menu but the chicken and the biscuits, though.
4. Beach Road Chicken Dinners: This is a local place, but it's famous for it's awesome soul-food style southern dinners. Creamed peas, whole fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, everything you could want. They have roast beef that can't be beat, too. And sweet tea, jesus christ it's so good. You gotta head down south for that.

Mid Tier:
Zaxby's, aka Blaxby's: Good seasoned chicken and super greasy. Get a chicken fingers basket and sample all the sauces.

Bottom Tier:
KFC: Not Chicken
Chick Fil-A: White people food. (note: I am a white guy, but not white enough for this garbage)

I really miss Church's Chicken. We used to have it in Toronto as they had got into a working agreement with Harvey's (Canadian burger chain) but it was way too pricey and didn't last longer than maybe 2 - 3 years. Either way, it was MASSIVE chicken and had the best tasting skin I've ever had.

Rod Driguez

there is no such thing as "bad" or "garbage" fried chicken. my tiers would be like this:

GOD
popeyes
church's
TOP
KFC
local "chicken spot"
chinese takeout wings
MID
chik-fil-a-type of stuff
LOW
stuff that isn't fried or chicken

we dont' have roscoes, publix or any of that other stuff in nj, but i'd assume there stuff is at least top tier just off the strength that it is fried chicken.

Church's has the biggest and crunchiest pieces for it's the greasiest fried chicken I've ever eaten. Their honey butter biscuits are top tier though and the spicy chicken is even better.

KFC has no flavor original or crunchy and all of their sides suck.

Popeye's has dry chicken and no flavor besides it just tasting a little spicy but their mashed potatoes is broken tier.

The only fried chicken place I like is Golden Chick; all of the pieces are massive, crunchy, little to no grease and for 8 pieces/$4.99 it's tough to beat. Spicy sprinkles are broken tier along with their mac and cheese.

Popeyes here is too dry and no taste.
Church's is grease.
KFC lacks taste but better than the above two.
Also Church's sides' size is like non-existent/white castle type small.
Popeyes sides suck.

damn, i love fried chicken. i could eat that everyday if it wasn't so bad for you.

KFC is nasty. shit is not even chicken at all. correct me if i'm wrong, but i dont think fried chicken crumbles into pieces when you take a bite. thats exactly what kfc chicken is.

churches chicken is awesome. i just wish theres one in california. i had churches chicken in vancouver BC and its the best ever.

jollibee have some pretty good fried chicken too but wayy too expensive. 2 pieces and a side of rice costs about 5-6 dollars. hella ripoff but damn, so good.

popeyes is okay but i mainly go for their shrimp. sometimes, the chicken gets too dry.

hooters have some pretty good fried chicken too. (hot wings to be exact, but its still fried chicken, especially the mild ones)

local chinese hot food shops and restaurant takeouts have some pretty good fried chicken too. the bad thing is that it tends to get soggy near the end of the day.

fried chicken from vietnamese restaurants are good too, especially with that nuoc mum fish sauce.

safeway fried chicken, avoid at all cost, unless its a free sample. its the worst, you've been warned.

You're not talking about Tillicompton (aka Tillicum) are you? If not, or so, I honestly don't remember. Maybe Lakewood? What Chinese place was off base that served good ass chicken? I remember those negro haircuts that those Chinese ladies did for $5 though. They could cut black dudes hair, I know that much. 1999-2002 shit...$20 and bullshit/shenanigans around here nowadays.

Yeah it was one of those places in Tillicum, mind you chicken in Wash is basically an afterthought. The only reason they have any chicken is because people not born in Wash eat it. Didnt Skeletor try to get in your pants or something at that haircut place.

For the longest time, there was a Church's Chicken in Lion plaza in San Jose...not sure if it's there anymore. Come on there's DEFINITELY Church's chicken in California...I kind of grew up with it. You know, now that I think about it, chicken from there was always really meaty and big, which is nice when you're a kid and not thinking about growth hormones...I wonder if those chicken 'roids affected my biology...:looney:

Popeyes - Chicken & red beans and rice is top tier, and nobody is fucking with their biscuits
KFC - use to be good back in the day, but now is hot garbage
Churches - really cheap but also really greasy and nasty
Mrs. Winner (can't believe nobody brought this up yet) - Chicken is solid and gallon of sweet tea is awesome
Publix - fried chicken is surprisingly good & their mardi gras wings are god tier
Folks (use to be Po Folks) - chicken and catfish are amazing, peach muffins are brokin tier.

Ok, I tried 99 Chicken today (relevant to guys in Norcal)

It's Korean Fried Chicken
It's really good. Fried in cottonseed oil, and not oily at all. Freshly fried when you order. I ordered regular and had some salt and pepper to season it. My friends got the Hot Wings, which tasted like Sweet and Sour sauce.

It's not as good as Roscoes, but it's better than Popeyes+ KFC imo.
I'm definitely going back again.

I love fried chicken. My grandma makes it all of the time. Shit I was practically raised on it through as a kid. However, I try to eat grilled chicken more than Fried chicken because of dietary and weightloss reasons. However, from time to time, I will indulge in one of my favorite meals.

I agree with most people: Popeyes PWNS KFC. I can eat KFC and enjoy it, but at times their shit is too greasy that it is almost slippery. And while Popeye's is greasy the meat is also crispy and tastes good when you bite into it. I may pick me up some tomorrow and take it to work with me. But despite the fast food Fried Chicken, it just can't beat the home made version.

I used to like Popeye's, but I had a bad experience with'em and so have boycotted them up until now.

KFC's pretty garbage now. I used to like their crispy-battered chicken, but it's been garbage as of late.

Pizza Pizza now serves fried chicken, but it's pretty low tier.

Depending on the place, spicy-fried chicken wings from Chinese places can be pretty good

KFC lost the crispy recipe over here, so there is not any contest. Pizza Pizza has wings and that's about all the known, brand-name competition you'll see in Toronto from this realm. Popeye's is king chicken. Even at tourneys. Anyone who has heard the freebox story can attest to the greatness of the king.

Some tasty shit, that.

Good recipe for fried chicken...there are two ways to make really tasty breading.

If you want KFC-style breading, soak the bitch in buttermilk overnight, then coat it in flour, then fry it.

If you want something more crispy-like (rather than crunchy-like), get some english muffins, throw em in a food processor, then add some regular bread crumbs, and throw in some spices of your choice (I like paprika, pepper, cajun and cayenne) and then coat the chicken in flour, dip it in egg (mixed with some milk/cream), then coat it in the bread crumbs.

I've had good KFC, but it's pretty damn rare nowadays. :shake: wtf happened...

And Churches is cheap as hell (good), but I've never had AMAZING Churches. Atleast it's never been terrible I guess...

Generally, Popeyes is the way to go. I've had some pretty bad Popeyes, but that was like 2 or 3 times in my entire life. They usually range from "meh, good enough" to "I came SO HOOOORD".

My biggest beef with most fried chicken places is how much the quality varies. =/ I can be pretty picky though.

Holy Shit. We had Maryland's Fried Chicken in Albany Georgia (my home town) next to the Krispy Kremes. EVERY TIME I came back home for Christmas, I had to have a three piece and large tater tots. I have NO idea how they season it, but grabbing Maryland's and then rolling over to eat to KK's made for a great way to end the night.

Well, I'm from Buffalo, NY, so it's pretty obvious the type of fried chicken I like, and that's Buffalo Wings.

Generally, I get it from any of the popular local pizza places, like La Nova's, Mr. Pizza, and Just Pizza. In fact, I never even had Buffalo Wings from their place of origin, Anchor Bar. And I live only a few blocks away from it.

Personally, I like Just Pizza the best: served coated in tons of different sauces (Honey Garlic is legendary) and a side of blue cheese. And they're served really crispy, just the way I like it.

No other place in the world serves Buffalo Wings as good as we do in Buffalo.

I've never had Popeye's or Church's Chicken, so I can't compare. There aren't any in Western New York, but I doubt that those places would survive here anyway due to the power of the Buffalo Wing. In fact the few KFC's that we have are on life support.

Damn, this is getting me hungry.

I like El Pollo loco but they're not exactly friend chicken. Actually what they sell is a lot better, plus with all the sides and the bread they give you, you get meals for like a week for $15 outta that place. If you go late at night they give you extra sides for free through the drive through. Can't beat that.

I like Roy Rogers as well, but they only seem to exist in interstate highways somewhere around NJ and Pennsylvania. They were pretty prevalent before Hardee's bought them out and ruined them, then went out of business after pissing away most of the locations.

If you're in NYC, the best is Crown Fried Chicken. The burgers there are awesome too. I somewhat wish there was one closer to me, but I suppose it's better there isn't as I'd get fat that way.
