Okay, a couple of days ago I finally got a meeting with a client to animate online comic books for her. It's a pretty damn sweet gig, too--basically she'll send me images of the artwork done by talented artists from all over the world and I go into flash and after effects and I turn them into 2 minute animated episodes. (30 episodes in all)
Personally, I've always wanted to take a job like this, so much so that I actually charged less than I would normally.

I had a pretty good feeling after the meeting that and started prepping everything to start the job once she started sending me the files. Done deal right? WRONG.

Tonight I got an email from her telling me that she decided to go with another design firm that charged a lot less than my already discounted price.
And where is this firm located, you ask? Why no other place than Mexico City! She did this despite saying that she wanted to stick with a local animator.

I quoted 600 bucks per minute which is an absolute steal considering what she wanted done, but there's no way I can compete with firm that only charges 450 dollars per minute! I would end up losing money!

During my blind rage, I actually found myself saying "Those fuckers took my job!!", then I laughed because I sounded just like those rednecks on that south park episode.

What a kick in the balls. oh well.

It was the initial meeting, basically doing price quotes, work hours, etc. Nothing was finalized, but like I said before, I had a pretty good feeling about the meeting and she seemed happy with the price and I met all her qualifications, including the only local talent with the degree of skill she was looking for. I knew she was looking at a couple of other local animators, but I knew them personally and although they are very talented in their own right, this kind of thing was not their forte...soooo why WOULDN'T she sign with me right? I figured she'd let them down and we would officially get down to business lol!

I knew she was shopping around, but the whole Mexican connection really threw me. Serves me right for being so cocky I guess.

I really don't think he gets paid $600 per minute OF WORK. It's per minute of video. Thus a two hour minute long Flash movie would net $600 x 2 = $1,200 for however long it took him to complete.

If it took him half an hour, he wouldn't be billing the client $18,000 for half an hour's worth of work.

Of course its for per minute of work. I can't speak for others nor will I make the mistake of assuming for them, but I simply find a job/career where u can make $600 for a minute of video/animation as a great. And not to mention if your good @t what you do it may not take u as much time as others to complete the same job and its almost like free money. Simple math.
But lets "assume" for a second that.
If a normal animator puts in 40 hours per week for 1 min of animation @ $600 that their basically making $15 per hour worked.
but if this dude could do the same 2 mins in the same amount of time as a normal animator hes making twice the money per hour.
Again assuming, but some of us are just blown by the amount of guaranteed money and possibly thinking by the way this guy is talking (like he said "cocky") that it would/is a cake job for him. I mean who knows, if the guy could do $600 worth of work in 10 hours or less or whatever (without hard labor) its still enough to get a high five from me.
