Konami has announced a new multiplatform game called "Rock Revolution" (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52713)

Scroll down for video (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52711)

Looks like they're stepping back into the arena that they fathered with games like Guitar Freaks and Drum Mania. This game does not look like its going to do as well though, in my opinion. The Wii version will only use remotes for "Air Drums" and "Air Guitar", the 360/ps3 versions will not support vocals, all songs (40 approx) are covers, and the DS version will use stylus controls and the mic for vocals. I feel for them, since they started all of this, but... they need to try harder.

can we call for a standardized peripheral for drums and guitars now? having 3 different sets of everything is stupid.

activision is being a dick about letting us use rock band equipment for GH. so i doubt it. as much as i love guitar hero and rock band i think i'm just going to give up on keeping up with things. things are getting too crazy and i'd rather spend my time playing SF.

Konami missed their chance at trying to capitalize on Guitar Freaks by never localizing it and never making the effort to score with the local bands and rock music and everything that made GH what it is today.

Will the drums be setup like the arcade versions?

Not that you're wrong, but part of why I like GF is the songs.

From the video...looks like even Konami isn't putting in proper judgment levels. What the hell?

What do you mean by "judgment levels"?

Not that you're wrong, but part of why I like GF is the songs.

People who are fans of Guitar Freaks that played it an arcade that had it, or imported it obviously liked it for the songs and are already fans of Japanese music, but the game wouldn't have the success GH had if Konami did a straight up conversion of the games and sell them in the US and play on US consoles with the songlistings they had. When the average guy at work always talks about how he originally bought the game for his kids, and ended up playing the game himself, he bought it because it had the local bands and songs and he and almost all other GH players probably wouldn't have if it was mainly Japanese stuff or unknown bands. Maybe that's why Konami chose not to localize it because they didn't see that as an opportunity, but had they put some effort into scoring with the local bands and songs, who knows, it may have ended up being their cash cow.

ninja edit -

A similar story is also the same for Elite Beat Agents where it won the DS game of the year and everyone loved it mainly because it had cover songs of popular North American music. Sure, people downloaded/imported Ouendan because they liked the Japanese songs, but if they had done a straight up conversion to sell it locally as Ouendan, it wouldn't have had the same success as EBA. The playability was there, but it had to have the music that the mainstream audience would like, so the localization for North American music is something Konami execs are probably blowing a lot of steam about from that missed opportunity.

GH and Rock Band have no penalty/reward for accuracy. it's either Hit or Miss, with no distinction of how accurate a hit is.

If only more people realized this, they wouldn't be so quick to bash GF for having only three buttons. Although I have to admit that GH did a wonderful move by using five.

I have been Konami fan for years and very into the Bemani scene since '01 making tournaments possible etc etc.

All I have to say is that Konami is always 2 years too late for everything they do now.

Domestically, yes. Later, actually.

Steps back in? Since when did they ever leave? I always see new versions of Guitar Freaks and Drummania every year at my arcades.

Oh wait, this is strictly a Konami of America type of deal.

Guitar Freaks is hard as hell. Some of those songs are harder on basic than Dragonforce on Expert.

I know Guitarhero is hard for some people, but Guitar Freaks having the previously mentioned judgment system makes the game a totally different event.

Wow that video was completely disappointing. Their judgement system and user interface (as seen in Beatmania) is clearly superior to Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Rock Revolution looks so f'ing bland.

The formula is simple. Tweak what you already created! Make the game more approachable for the american audience. They instead took a step back and copied RockBand/Guitar Hero. They copied the bland Combo Meter, Groove Gauge, and Note Track from GH. It looks like a second class emulator.

Zoe mode (http://www.zoemode.com/) and HB Studios (http://www.hb-studios.com/) seem to be the development houses for this game. Oh well :arazz:

its pretty understandable as to why you guys are peeved that GF isnt coming.

clearly its a display of skill mechanic which drives your interests, but that only appeals to the hardcore. the casual audience who doesnt care about hit or miss enjoys the games like GH and RB because its accessible. my sister who doesnt play games for shit still plays rock band because its simple and fun. a scoring mechanic that rubs how bad you are in your face will probably turn off the casual gamer.

i kind of find this to be a sad twist of fate, that Konami the company that started rhythmical games got served in denying US audiences these games in its early stages because they felt we wouldnt care... then Guitar Hero comes out and is a huge success, and then Rockband comes in and now Konami is get smashed up.... sad indeed.

But see, adding perfect/great/good/bad/miss instead of just hit/miss wouldn't change anything at all for the casual player, as long as the combo keeps going up.
