Recent events have basically eliminated my plan of moving to Arizona this summer, but I still have a substantial amount of money saved up for some kind of trip. I recall people that studied abroad living with families in foreign countries but I also remember quite of few stories of people living in other countries just for the hell of it. Does anyone have ANY idea where I could go about looking for information on finding people that do this? At first the idea seemed far fetched to me but I think I remember almost every foreign exchange student when I was in high school saying "oh yes you can come visit my country for as long as wish, my family would love to have you as a guest," etc.

Yeah I'm not looking for the usual destinations like Japan, Europe, etc. I'd just like a really calm normal place that has a good amount of things accessible within a couple days travel. Thailand seems like a decent choice but I'm not exactly sure if it would be a good idea to live in a big city there. Another big worry of mine is the safety level in certain places like the Philippines or Brazil in regard to traveling around the countryside, etc.

All I got out of this paragraph was : "I want to go to countries where the likelihood that I get AIDS is very real, and the probability that most of the girls are really boys is high." Save your money. If you want to travel join the navy its probably safer than what your thinking of doing.
