AX 2008: Who's going?

We're about a month away from Anime Expo 2008. Anyone from SRK going?

There's been a pretty strong contingent of SRK folks the past few years.

However, with this year's AX at the Los Angeles Convention Center I was wondering who's going.

There's no Transformers premiere to steal the show this year, but AX is always fun.

Well, normally me and my friend's book a hotel for all 4 days, but since all the hotels are a bus-ride away, that's too much of a hassle, so I'm probably just going 2 days, 3 max.

So far there aren't any concerts/guests I need to see so this one might just be an extended shopping trip this time. I might check out the Shoko Nakagawa concert, but it's not somehitng I HAVE to see.

I'm pretty sure the Shriners locked up a seven-year deal after the 06 AX. So this is the second year since the deal therefore we have five more miserable years to go.

Well shit, as long as we get LBCC next time, I actually preferred it there, you didn't need to drive to get food at all. Saved alot of money in that sense.

I think people were just upset about the lack of organization last year becasue I thought the location was great but people were complaining about it a ton.

My workplace got the contract to do AX this year, I am not working there unfortunately though the fees can be waived off if I decide to go. I am trying to get some people given the only thing we have to worry about is the hotel (have to call the housing block division for some sort of discount haha)

I ain't going this year because it moved to Los Angeles, one of the worst traffic filled streets EVER!!!

Anaheim will always be the best choice, its a shorter distance and its easy to find and leave!

Depends, opinions on last year seem pretty split in half of either totally awesome and possibly best in a while or total shit. Some of the events like the haruhi shit were really, REALLY bad and there were problems with the autograph session or whatever, but sicne I relaly don't care about Haruhi that much I thought it was awesome. We even saw an early FREE screening of Transformers.

As for the location itself it was great because there were plenty of places to eat RIGHT there so no one ever had to drive for those 4 days, save alot of money that way.

I had mixed reactions about last year's AX. Everything seemed unorganized and not planned out properly. Delaying some events, severely limiting the amount of attendees for others, not having all the proper equipments, etc. What really pissed a lot of people off was when AX screwed over Haruko Momoi, canceling most of her appearances and almost canceling her concert :arazz:

Being able to hear Aya say "Timotei~" and Johnny Yong Bosch say "It's Morphin' Time!!" was cool though.

I'll be going again this year, but I'm not too enthusiastic about it. I just hope they don't screw over Shoko's concert :bluu:

I agree. The main problem is that the selection of hotels that are within the vicinity sucks. There's no where to go to eat that's close by except some highly questionable restaurants and fast food joints in downtown area.

I've been dying to stay at AX in a hotel. I tied last year, but the Renaissance fucked up my whole weekend and overbooked.

There aren't any hotels I would want to stay at, at least within reasonable walking distance.

If AX is at the LACC next year won't that hotel next to Nokia be complete by then? If so I might try to stay again.

You pay by 4-day, 2-day, or, 1-day packages. 2 and 1 are always the same prices but if you ordered a 4-day early there's a discount, too late for that though.

IIRC currently 4 is $60, 2 is $40, 1 is $25

There were some hot chicks in the console room! But anyways, BlazBlue was pretty sweet lookin. I played it once and didn't really care to play it again. I was usin the CatGirl with the Witches hat, but anyways, she was really cool, but the people playin there just wanted to beat people up with Mr.SHOTOMASHER RAGNA so no body was trying to figure out the moves or whatnot. Brainless action goin on there. No movelist, + messed up button mapping on the stick + laggy tv, all of them do not go well with each other. I heard things were a little different on the cabinet that had the game, but unfortunately/coincidentally, way too many people over there.

Actually there was a movelist on one of the other BB terminals IIRC. But if you played on the big screen like I did you probably never saw them, and nobody was taking the time to learn the mechanics and whatnot so most just mashed with Noel or picked Ranga.

Some reps were teaching people how to play Battle Fantasia but I pretty much caught on without their help.

they jus talked about the SMT series and what they've brought to the US as well as discuss localization issues.

they talked about Persona 4 gonna be released in JPN soon and decided to show the trailer for it,

then at the end of the trailer when it shows "Coming to North America 12/9/08" the whole crowd began to go crazy!!!

and then we all got free shirts!

Without the level 3 super that was Transformers last year this year's AX couldn't measure up.

BTW, any of you guys play CVS2 or MVC2? I was the tall Hispanic dude with cornrolls who lost every single CVS2 match, but every single one was close. Usually A or N groove with Rolento, Guile and Sagat.

How about MVC2? That one bald dude with the stache beasted everyone. It was like he never left the arcade. Kinda sad to spend all one's time at a con at an arcade. Anyway, he was tough with MSP.

Same here, I came all the way from Corona and on 4th of July getting there and parking was a breeze, and it was even more easier exiting out of there with no traffic going home and it wasn't too hot of a day either.

I was surprise how good this year's AX was.

BlazBlue was the highlight of AX followed by SCIV, and everybody there including the workers and the attendees were actually friendly and social, some actually came up to me and started chatting and they were chicks too :bgrin:

This year made up for last years Orangutan Shit of an AX at Long Beach. AX 07 was so shitty and boring, it was the opposite of what I said of this years Expo.

BB was the reason I decided to go to this years AX and I was going to break the 10 year AX attendance streak, yeah I've been going to AX since 1998.

Thats good to know that it was cheaper this year since last year was a rip off, I haven't been a crazy shopper there in a long time, last time I spent a lot of money there was in the 2002 show, I was broke that day.

Yeah, I didn't really see a lot of stuff I really wanted. Back then around 2000-2003 SNK, Capcom, Love Hina, DVD bootlegs, Game soundtracks, and ton of other items and artbooks dominated those years, now I don't see a lot of stuff I want this time.

Next year, expect a ton of BlazBlue cosplayers!

I thought AX was awesome this year. I think the LA convention center is pretty much perfect for it. Its large so not only is everything in one location but there is plenty of space and Im assuming thats why it was more organized. Its great not having to walk from hotel to hotel to these random rooms trying to find stuff. Plus the exhibit hall was bigger so there was actually room to walk around. From what I heard from the closing ceremonies the attendance this year was around 43,000 which is the largest so far. Its just that LA convention is so big it doesnt seem as packed as if it were in Anaheim or Long Beach.

The only problem i had with AX this year was the masquerade. It was short as hell and some of the costumes were just horrible. I think the moment that pissed me off the most is when the guy who dressed up as someone from Fist of the North Star won a prize. Now i may be wrong and his costume might have been amazing but all i saw were a pair of jeans and a guy doing his best to kick on stage.

I thought AX was awesome this year. I think the LA convention center is pretty much perfect for it. Its large so not only is everything in one location but there is plenty of space and Im assuming thats why it was more organized. Its great not having to walk from hotel to hotel to these random rooms trying to find stuff. Plus the exhibit hall was bigger so there was actually room to walk around. From what I heard from the closing ceremonies the attendance this year was around 43,000 which is the largest so far. Its just that LA convention is so big it doesnt seem as packed as if it were in Anaheim or Long Beach.

You're right about the numbers. I had read in an earlier story on the AX site that 34,000 had come by and I thought, "Man, that's a huge dip."

I knew a buttload of people came by, especially Saturday and Sunday.

The L.A. Convention Center is definitely the best venue, but nothing can match the "homeliness" of Anaheim and the easy access of the numerous hotels.

I was very sure that around 50,000 were there in Anaheim back in 06...last year was about the same in LB...but IMO they pushed it to LA one year too early...since the new places won't be open there until this fall...but by 09, it will be much better.

Security was misinformed, arcade is the only room at AX where a badge wasn't required. I had to get staff to clear it up on Saturday night, super annoying.
