View Full Version : Wile E. Coyote - Talking or silent?

I was watching some Looney Tunes cartoons and I saw one where he goes up against Bugs bunny and is talking through out the episode in a posh/high class manner.
I saw it as a kid but though it was an aberration. He talked in a roadrunner cartoon once IIRC.

Imo, the coyote talking is a definite no-no. He should only use gestures and signs.
IT ruins the mystique ,esp in a roadrunner cartoon.

OR do you think the cartoons would have been better with him speaking as he did on those select few cartoons?

I think the joke is that he's actually really well spoken. He just never says anything. Sort of like how Morn was supposed to be really annoyingly talkative in DS9.
I think it's fine if he says something once in a rare while as a sort of punchline. I'm talking like once every 50 episodes though.

i always thought the beauty of the roadrunner shorts was that so much was said without any words.

it's a tough choice. I slightly prefer the talking. Coyote with that arrogant tone is great. His intro line summed it up perfectly "My name is Wile E. Coyote. Genius."

talking Pink Panther was a complete disaster though. It ruined the character for me. I don't even remember much of that since I thankfully blocked it out like any other traumatic childhood memory.

Yeah, I completely agree. The Pink Panther should NEVER speak, EVER. The moment he did, the cartoon was trash. Oh, and his little buddies, like the blue anteater and the Mexican frogs need to never be shown on TV again.

Him speaking once every blue moon is part of the joke.

Especially considering how well spoken he was.

"Wile E. Coyote, SUPER GENIUS". Such an awesome line, made more effective by the fact that he never (or very rarely) spoke before then. I'd say keep him muted when interacting with the Road Runner, but if he's in a short with other characters, speech is fair game.

When did Pink Panther speak?

In his later cartoons.

I like talking Wile E alittle better, he came off as completely egomaniacle and it fit.

When did Pink Panther speak?
He spoke very rarely toward the end of his original run in the 60s/70s, and he spoke a lot in his shitty return in the mid-90s and early 2000s.

What the fuck? No. The two cartoons are not even anywhere near the same league in terms of quality.

Anyway, I also wanted to mention that the original Pink Panther shorts featured canned laughter, which, in my opinion, detracted from their mostly-slapstick jokes. Most of them were later re-edited with the laughter removed.

Also, there is apparently going to be a new Pink Panther cartoon airing this fall. I'm sure it will suck major dick like the new Tom & Jerry cartoons, though, so I will continue to remember the old 80s VHS compilations of the re-edited 60s and 70s shorts as the pinnacle of the character.

Regarding the thread topic, though, I also thought of an addendum. I think talking characters have to be paired with other talking characters in order for the humor to work. The Pink Panther and Sons was a short-run 80s cartoon featuring a silent Pink Panther with his two talking sons, and it completely sucked.

So, since the Roadrunner cannot talk, I don't think Wile E. Coyote should either when the two are paired. However, since Bugs can't really stop talking, Wile E. actually needs to talk when paired with Bugs.

Tom & Jerry need to stay silent forever, though. Even their gasps and shit sound out of character these days because their expressions and movements were originally synced with musical cues. I do hear, however, that the new cartoons feature the violence of the originals, so I may check them out. I just hope Tom actually wins once in a while, like how he used to way back in the day.

I thought that talking Wile E was funnier. He had business cards!

"Wile E Coyote

He should be mostly silent, and only speak every so often. That's the joke.

It's kinda like how Silent Bob can't say shit except for certain parts of the movie. And then, to further compound the joke, in Clerks II, after he had a precedence of saying some real deep, profound shit, he simply said "I got nothing."

Although "I am Wile E. Coyote... SUPER GENIUS." is one of the best lines ever.

When discussing silent characters, it's all about Snake Eyes.

Thats actually a different character with the Sheepdog, although he looks just like Wyle E Coyote.. I think his name is Ralph the Wolf

Wile E. Coyote used to freak me out when he talked, it was like a Halloween special or something when I was younger.

I still prefer it, mainly because his pomposity makes his failures even more sweet.

I like talking Wily E. Coyote, especially when he gets into those epic battles of the will against Sam the Sheperd Dog. Some of those conflicts, and responses, were hilarious.

I miss classic Looney Tunes. I saw the LA Philharmonic perform at the Hollywood Bowl perform their original Looney Tunes music while they played the cartoons on a big screen. It was so awesome. Saw it twice, in fact.
