Most likely a fungus that appears due to poor oral hygiene.
It's common, so just ask your doc or pharmacist for a mouth wash or rinse and that will take care of it.

Your tongue could also be dried out because of what you've been eating recently. Try drinking more water, either way it never really hurts to drink more water.

I read somewhere that a certain amount or shade is normal. I was wondering about it too since some of the 'japanese girls on youtube' tend to have pink almost reddish tongues. Smooth looking and absolutely no white.

Just brush it, you're neglecting it. They have toothbrushes out there that has a scrubber on the opposite side of the bristles on the back specifically for your tongue. You don't necessarily need one of those though.

Tongue plaque sadly can stick to some tongues better than others, so for people with really briar patchy papillae this can be next to impossible to eliminate through conventional means.
