The big tourney is starting this weekend. So far looks like Germany is the favourite to win according to the betting shops.
I know most of SRK doesn't give a fuck about soccer. Sorry for wasting your time having to click on this thread.
Other then that discuss who your favourites are. I have croatia making it to the finals but i'm a bit biased considering that i am croatian. I think spain has a great chance to win except that there the team know for being perenial under achivers.

well, belarus was an exhibition match after a hard training camp and germany won their last game against serbia. though results in such matches doesn't really mean anything.

I have an accumulator on with Germany to win at 4/1, Klose to be top scorer at 9/1 and Ballack to be player of the tournament at 10/1.
Could be a nice little earner for me.
Disappointed Ireland aren't there, but now we have a world class manager I'm confident we'll qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Edit: It's just called Euro 2008, not Eurocup 2008.

Ya england has to many imported players playing in there league.
Da Silva will be out for another 6-10 months depending on rehab. His injury was horible. they say if it took 10 mins longer to get to the hospital they would have had to amputate his foot. Big loss for croatia seeing he's our best goal scorer by far. He scored 10 in qualifying. Hopefully some of the other guys can step up there game.

Hey what's up?
First day is over and not a bad start.
Switzerland 0 - 1 Czechs
Portugal 2 - 0 Turkey
Switzerland had some real bad luck. They played really well the whole time and were constantly attacking. Unfortunately the Czechs defense was too good, they played a nasty JWong turtle style and scored out of nowhere. Switzerland had some good chances(one shot on the bar) but even more bad luck when their top scorer and captain got hurt so bad that he can't play any further, the tourneys over for him. That really sucks, Dude had tears in his eyes =/
Portugal dominated the whole time, Ronaldo was not that great imo but the rest of the team. The turks seemed unorganized and didn't stand a chance. Besides the two goals portugal had 3 chances that hit the post(That's like 3 unintentional parries of a noob everytime you wan't to finish him off).
I kinda felt bad for the turkish fans.
I think the Czechs will come far with that playing style if they have too. Their defense is rock solid with that complete rank of Seria A players.
Tomorrows games will be
Austria - Croatia
Poland - Germany
Hey Random Hero,
We'll be playing against each other tomorrow, how do you think it will end? I honestly have no clue, beeing Austrian and thereby born pessimist it's kinda hard to believe we'll get anything but a draw. On the other hand, we have home advantage and played 3:4 against the netherlands(did lead 3:0 but got some really nasty goals) so it's not that unlikely.
For me this and Group C are my favourites. Group C because it basically is a mini EM and Group A because the matches are awesome from a cultural perspective.
Croatia is one of my favourite teams and as I live in Vienna I have a lot of Croatian Friends. I'll really be enjoying that game tomorrow... I'm so pumped, the first time I am where the cup is held plus it's in my country and the finale in my home town :woot:
Poland and Germany are also two great teams in this group, Poland because many polish people live here and Germany ... well we kinda are what Canada is to the US :P So every game will be fulled with fire :wgrin:
My Top 3 guesses for the title are
Croatia
Spain
Winner of Group C(because who ever survives that group at least makes it to the finale
So far not much of an spirit is going around, probably because the first games were in basel. I've seen a lot of croatia fans today so tomorrow the atmosphere is gonna be great. =D
Oh and, it's great the cup is here an all but a cup of beer(0.5l) costs € 5,50 at the fan zones"

Got some Germany vs. Poland action in 6 or so hours, I'm excited. Great rivalry going there, maybe we'll see some blitzkrieg action.
My only real concern for this tournament is that none of our players get inured before the season. We don't need Van Persie out for another half season again; dude's been on life support these past two seasons where we hardly see him. Fabregas better stay fit too. Otherwise I'm just hoping for some good football. Maybe for CRonaldo to break his ankle or something, that'd be a good sight.

Being English, and seeing how we didnt make it, my pick is with Spain. Since they are like England in having good players, but dont win shit because they usually dont perform as well as expected. Im hoping that a few unknowns will burst onto the scene in this tourny.
And I think Germany are always a safe pick. Their defense isnt as good as it used to be, with the exception of Lahm I guess. But the attacking threat is still damn good, Klose, Podolski, Ballack etc. Once again I think they will score some NICE long shots!
I was upset that not many teams were testing out their shooting yesterday. So many goalkeepers have complained about the ball moving all over the place.
Czech Rep was bordering on depressing, even tho they won. Koller got NO service..
i saw both matches yesterday. I feel bad for the swiss people .. they totally played the better offensive fotball and got a lucky counter goal against them. the Cechs didt look at all like the super team they had last european championship but maybe they plan to do it like Greece did last time and have 11 men in defense the entire tournament..and counter teams to death.
the Portugal-Turkey game is one of the best nationals fotball matches ive seen in a long time.. Portugal looks incredibly strong and i wouldt dare bet against them not winning. I mean you just gotta like em they play really fun football to watch.
as for who wins this stuff i wouldt rule out italy or germany. its hard to predict theres almost no poor team in the entire european championships anyone could beat anyone. the draw in group C is just brutal..gotta be one of the hardest group ive seen in any championships (France , Netherlands , Italy and Romania)
OH .. i really feel for England not making the cut.. there was some brutal Keeper mistakes. Im Norwegian and if anyone wanna see why we didt make the Euro 2008 and have a good laugh while doing it heres the link.

Germany looked impressive. Poland's defence shouldn't have even bother to show up if they were going to play like that. The brazilian on poland looked pretty good. Created quite a bit of space in the front.
Croatia played absolutely horrid and did not deserve that win. I guess winning is more important then playing good football. Hopefully they can pick there game up, next opponent is germany. If they play like they did against austria it will be 5-0 Germany. You can tell there really missing eduardo up front.

Need Netherlands to get through tomorrow so we can see a rehash of the WC match against Portugal.
saw both matches again yesterday.
the austria-croatia match turned out to be a fracking robbery. croatia had 30 min of good play and pressure in the first half. Austria just wasnt dangerous enough and didt use their chances well enough. the end of the match was played within croatias 16m... its a miracle they didt concide a goal. Austria diserved better and played really well , but they dont have the quality of the croats.
the Germany Polen match was a confirmation of the germans strong side. They looked almost as impressive as portugal. Polen never really stood a chance.... but istn it cheating putting brazilians on the polish team ??? .. that one brazilian guy was clearly the best player on polen ..if not the entire field. Germany was never in trouble tho and cruised trough for 3 points. the second goal was funny. i wonder if uefa gives Miroslav Klose an "assist" on his kick.... he missed terribly on a shot .. and his miss turned out to be a perfect layup for a volley-goal. I still think Germany and Polen will make the quarter finals from this group.

Damn.... I can't remember a game for the life of me where Italy was hacked so badly.
We seriously had no response for Holland's lead. Toni was just blowing shots left and right, the defense was SERIOUSLY off cue, and everything just came together and went down in flames.
Although, to be perfectly honest, Van Nistelhorse's first goal was in a CLEAR offside. What the shit, ref?
I would be a LOT more worried, had France and Romania not played such a shitty game today as well. It looks pretty feasible for Italy to cram a spot in there somewhere, but they need to get their shit together against Romania.

As far as I'm concerned if Italy's goalie pushed his own player offside, it shouldn't be called. Just like in hockey when a player knocks his own goalie down and a goal is scored.
Wait, was that the first goal or 2nd? I didn't get to see the whole match.

The first goal. I think it was Sneijder who made a cross shot, Van MisterEd (in an offside position) extends his leg, puts the ball in the net.
The second goal was actually pretty awesome, I'd admit. It was done by Sneijder on a volley shot. :wow:

I must say, ESPN's decision to use Andy Gray to call matches was absolutly stellar. He has done a wonderful job thus far; finally a smart and funny guy to call football. I hope they decide to use him in the Champions League next year.
romania france was a boring 0-0 draw game in my oppinion. neighter team really dared to push anything forward. no Henry eighter. Im afraid France will struggle to advance from this group. im a little surprised France didt risk more and go for a goal.. Ribery was good , but they lack a dangerous striker like Henry. Romania should still be pleased for getting a draw in this match ..they werent really anywere near scoring against france.
italy-Netherlands 0-3 HOLY SNAP. this was the best game in the euro 2008 so far, the netherlands looked like champions right from the start and gave italy living hell with their attacking fotball. im really impressed with Sneijder, van Bronckhorst and van Nistelrooy. Nistelrooy really looked better than he's done ever before and he gets a big + for not taking a dive when he could have .. when buffon rushed out early in the first half. he could easily have filmed there but he didt.(very unlike nistelrooy). i thought the first goal was a clear offside .. and im pretty sure the refferees didt see what happened eighter , however it turned out to be a genious call as an injured italian defense player was lying behind the goal recieving tretment. the second goal was utterly amazing .. best goal in the tournament so far. netherlands looks really strong im almost sure they will advance from this group now

Netherlands looked quite good. Might have been a totally different match if the first goal was disallowed. Although props to rudd for not diving in the box right in the beginning. last european championships i thought the chezh republic looked the strongest and i would have bet on them winning ..but they got edged out by a german- playing greece team. I think italy will bounce back horribly strong. they never play good untill they have to , romania might prove to be a good oponent for them to regain some self confidence. group C is still very open in my oppinion , with a slight advantage to the netherlands.

romania france was a boring 0-0 draw game in my oppinion. neighter team really dared to push anything forward. no Henry eighter.
Nistelrooy really looked better than he's done ever before and he gets a big + for not taking a dive when he could have .. when buffon rushed out early in the first half. he could easily have filmed there but he didt.(very unlike nistelrooy). i thought the first goal was a clear offside .. and im pretty sure the refferees didt see what happened eighter , however it turned out to be a genious call as an injured italian defense player was lying behind the goal recieving tretment. the second goal was utterly amazing .. best goal in the tournament so far. netherlands looks really strong im almost sure they will advance from this group now
I disagree. Romania did what she was suppose to do, play defense and get the counters. She suceed in the first but failed in the second. France was the one with the responsibilty to win the game and play offensive, but they didn't do anything. They seemed a little lost.
Italy and Holland was indeed the best game so far. Holland imposed her game since the beginning and Italy could not find any counters to it.
Holland is on fire and will probably win the Eurocup.!!!:woot:
Portugal is playing shit so far.:looney:

Old crippled keepers are what you want to see. That means youre guaranteed goals :p
Villa was red hot earlier. Considering he plays for Valencia, you'd have to think his performance today would have made every top club sit up and take more notice. Valencia need to sell players to avoid going into receivership as far as Im aware. They need moneys bad.
My pick of Spain look good so far. But then they always do at the start. The squad looks a little different than I imagined it would be. I thought Joaquin and Vincente would be involved, but I didnt even see them on the bench. Maybe my picture of Spain is a little to old school, but then you cant complain at having Xavi and Iniesta in midfield. Pity Fabregas couldnt start, thought he was nice when he did play, guy never gets a pass wrong. (But Anderson REGULATES him in the prem!)
Random Thoughts so far.
Italy were so unlucky against Holland. Nistelrooy was so blatently offside. He even looked up to see if the linesman raised the flag, lol. That goal changed the course of the match. Italy had to commit men forward and they were creating plenty of opportunities, but the gods were against them, and Holland took advantage and scored some great goals on the counter attack.
Germans are overrated. They are probably one of the luckiest teams ever in the history of international football, and always seem to go far, whether they play brilliant or completely shit. Also they might aswell be at home for this tournament, since they border both Austria and Swiss, both of which speak German, among other langauges. So they will see huge support.
To the people tipping Croatia. I just can't see it. Its not because I'm english. Theres some strong teams this year and when Croatia comes up against one, they will fall apart. They won't get easy games like they had with England.
Spain looked great today. Yes Russia were sloppy at times at the back, but when your up against not 1 but 2 world class strikers, then the defence is always going to have trouble. However I thought Russia looked good on attack and look capable of scoring goals, it always seemed to be their final ball which let them down.
Greece, played just as i thought they would. They weren't even looking to score untill Sweden did. While its good to have slow build up and look for the right opportunities to score, there was no urgency at all from them. The time they got going, it was far too late. Sweden on the other hand just didn't look like they could create anything. But thats probably due to Greece keeping 11 players behind the ball at all times. The battle for 2nd place in group D should be exciting.

Russia played a fair game today until the first goal. Then they all fell apart. Villa's scoring insanity didn't help either. Spain had a wonderful showing and their goals were very well earned. I kinda wanted Russia to win, but hey, Spain earned it.
Greece vs. Sweden... wow. Both of Sweden's goals were beautiful. There was so much going on inside the box, no wonder their goalie looked so disheartened. (He also reminded me of George Clooney.) I was proud of Sweden for winning but I wanted Greece to win this one.
For those of you with money on Klose for being top scorer, watch Villa. He's doing pretty good so far.

Nah man it wasn't offside, it was buffons "fault" he knocked a defender down and out of the field. So there was still one player behind the attacker.

Anyway Holland finished the chances they got, Italy failed to do so. So yea in the end it's the result that matters.

Yep, it's especially Cannavaro that they need. Also everybody seems to forget that Italy is a team that grows in the tournament, was the same with WC 06. Their performance in the groups was mediocre after that they slaughtered everyone.

There was some fuck ups in the formation, no doubt. Yeah. I think if Italy played with the form they had at the end of the game, the game couldve gone in a different direction.
And I don't watch nearly as much when there's no WC or EC. It's hard to proclaim allegiance to a club, when the players are from al over the globe. The logical thing would be to root for your own city, but as you know, that's not an option for you and me.

He plays right midfield at Juventus, Juventus play in 4-4-2 formation how can he be a right winger when Juventus play 4-4-2 ? It's a totally different position and it comes with totally different tasks.
IF Juventus play with a formation that allows wingers, Del Piero is the left winger , Trezeguet is the striker and Iaquinta is the right winger. Camoranesi has never played as a right winger.

Let me try to explain with an image, since you clearly don't know what a winger is.

Camoranesi plays as RM all the time, but got the position of RW, hope that clears it up.

They're playing eighteen players for crying out loud!
EveryFlowerFlow
06-11-2008, 07:18 AM
The problem is your assuming he's stationary the whole game. He's not. He starts at Right mid and moves to the up too attacking right midfield (what you call a wing) when his team is in possesion of the ball. Now because he covers the whole of the right side rather just being stuck at right mid, he's a WINGER ( someone who covers the whole side, right side in his case) not just a midfielder (covering one part). Think of C.Ronaldo or how Beckham used to play
Also players like Del Piero, Henry and Rooney aren't wingers but come deep to collect ball regulary at the wings. They start as forwards but drift to the wings.
Look at Juve's tactics, notice the arrow on camoranesi
R-Jive
06-11-2008, 07:26 AM
Uhm what? there's no reason to assume he would stay stationary ..the task of the right and left midfielders is exactly as you stated but as a LM or RM player you CAN'T stay stationary because you have help defend AND attack it's what your task consists of thus making you a midfielder, just because he covers the whole right side doesn't make him a winger at all.
Look at Messi for example he is a WINGER.
In the image they are playing 4-4-2 there are no wingers in that formation. The position that Camoranesi has in 4-4-2 is STILL RM. He STILL has to come back and help defend because he is a MID fielder, as a winger you generally only attack give passes from the outside, try to get inside to gain a good position. They're generally Strikers but from the Left and Right.
EveryFlowerFlow

bullshit call on the penalty but polands goal was offside. I guess two wrongs make a right.
This ensures croatia goes through to the next round.
Perhaps austria v germany can be the biggest upset in eurocup history.
doubt it though.

wait wut, what happened? germania lost?!
yes they lost 2-1 to croatia. now Croatia is trough to the quarter finals and the other 3 teams could all grab the second spot..
Germany will be trough with a draw or a win in the last match and Poland and Austria will have to win and preferably with more than one goal. im pretty sure Germany goes trough anyway , but then they will be facing Portugal in the quarter finals !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha ja, that penalty kick was poetic justice :D that goal was soooooo offside, no doubt about it.
Austria vs Germany will be the match of the century. If Lehmann plays like he did against Croatia, those chances are in and GGPO Germany
GG Croatia you redeemed yourself for me from that ugly match against us but maybe it was just because we were too good to be dominated like Germany :P
Ahhh cordoba will be forgotten =)

That Robben goal was so funny.
Henri scores.
Music plays, celebration.
Replay shows the goal, music still playing.
Replay ends, music stops, camera is focused on Robben, he scores immediately.
Music starts again.
Too funny.
Romania-Italy 1-1 !!!!!!

holy snap i just saw the penalty in the 83.rd minute .. that save by buffon was a life saver. 1-1 at least gives italy a fair chance to go trough.
Netherlands - France 4 - 1
the netherlands is just amazing SEVEN goals in two matches wtf !!!!!. france concides an early goal and then its france vs van der sar for like half an hour. but latter half of second half is just ownage by netherlands... that detail by van nistelrooy was just amazing on the 2nd goal. Robben came in as a super substitute.. that 3rd goal was an amazing solo effort. like 30 seconds after Henry scored.
this group is great ..i thought maybe italy and france would advance ..but now its netherlands and romania in the front.

or netherlands ca just fire both france and italy (still potential competitors) letting romania win in the direct matchup
with this trick
nethe 6
roma 3+3
italy - france whatever depending on direct challenge
netherlands fucking rampaged people...wow...

true... it has been done before...
with this trick

that would appear to be a smart move by the netherlands because they are group winners no matter what. Romania only has 2 points tho and france and italy has one point each and even same goal difference.
--------------------------------
Netherlands 6pt
Romania 2pt
France 1pt
Italy 1pt
--------------------------------
but from the way romania has played i dont think anyone should underestimate them. netherlands might rest their star players , but i still think that even with a lot of the top 11 on the bench netherlands could win against romania and there would be a winner in the france-italy match sending eighter one of them trough.

i think it's not 'conspiration' but pure strategy
obviously when swe+dan 'biscuited' we complained a lot
but observing from another pov you can easilily understand:
france and italy are both strong capable to get far or win in the competition (after a good wakeup of course)
so strategically you keep out two possible champ wannabe
playing to letting romania win will rest netherland players..they don't seem to keep full speed fo 90' in a tough match (as we seen in vs italy)
euro is a quick competition so if you manage to mantain good performance until the end without wasting unnecessary energy you'll surely get an advantage in the last matches
then it all depends on vanbasten and netherland pride
im romanian

if you've seen the match ..you'd know this couldt be further from the truth. the sweeden - denmark match were tough as nails .. theres tons of prestigue in the neigbour matchups. most of the goals in this match were ..really good goals.

2004..
and then at this euro qualifiers they seemed to have a good team with solid defence..
went for all this trouble qualifying to end up failing like that
Greece took everyone by surprise the last time , but stuff like that dosent happen twice. even the very next year in 2005 in the confederations cup (where champions from each continent meets) they struggled really hard and got trashed by everyone but the african champions tunisia. and on top of that they didt even qualify to the world cup in 2006
but in this years qualifiers they looked a bit more promising and won the group in front of turkey and norway. that dude with the pony tale scored lots on his head. Kirgiakos i think it is. Nikopolidis looked really horrible yesterday that blunder on the goal was terrible.
Even if Sweeden has impressed me lots (with Zlatan on the field) Im starting to think Russia could go trough , they will get their star player back for the next match.... Arshavin.

ok, what on earth happened at the end of the first half of the Spain/Sweden Match
1. An obvious penalty call was just ignored
2.And the ref Whistled the end of the half.......when Spain were pressing hard in offense???????? That shit aint logical

What an amazing ending to this game. Turkey score 3 in the final 15 mins to win. Volkan gets kicked out for shoving koeller. Turks have no subs so the midfielder jumps in net. This is good for Croatia. They now get to play Turkey who will be missing there starting goalkeeper.
What a shot on that third goal too. I was really looking forward to the pks but the ending was even better
