WORM OLYMPICS OPENS (http://wormolympics.com/)

the old worms thread came and went right under the radar before, but since i've been playin' my fingers to the bone over the last few days in WA (moreso than usual at least) and everyone oh so loves GD, can't hurt to try this again now can it!

the old thread's info was all spread around so i'll write a more concise and complete mini-FAQ here real soon if anyone wants it; for now though here's where you can buy worms (http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Prose-Team17-99674-Armageddon/dp/B00000K4DE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1200773388&sr=8-2) (or here in the UK (https://secure.team17.com/browse.html?area=search&keyword=Armageddon)), here's the (outdated as hell) demo (http://wormsarmageddon.team17.com/main.html?page=good&area=demo) to try the waters with, here's the latest update (http://wormsarmageddon.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda) (scroll down until you find 3.6.28.0), and here's a bank of newbie info (http://nanacide.com/wahelp) for when you're left scratching your head trying to set the game up and such

i'll gladly host games if anyone's down, but if you can host on 2DF or GGPO then for sure you'll be able to host on this too (just forward ports (http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/wnguide-firewall.php) UDP 6667 and TCP 17011). the latest update lets you netplay with direct TCP/IP (basically the p2p you know and love) as well as official servers on a lobby system called wormNET, so take your pick; there's nearly always at least 50-60 people connected on wormnet at a given time, no need to worry about having to play all by your lonesome!

and if hitting up wormnet pubbies and SRK all the time just doesn't quite hit the spot for you for some reason then there's also a good deal of online leagues (e.g. XTC league (http://xtcleague.com/), ligaworms (http://www.ligaworms.org/) (spanish), the challenge base (http://thechallengebase.com/)) and regular tourneys (e.g. worm olympics (http://wormolympics.com/)) to check out; there's also the worms wiki (http://worms2d.info/Community) with a grand ol' listing of even more community sites, forums and IRC channels for your viewing pleasure

get hype folks, wormy MADHOUSE up in here!

you'd be glad to find the roping schemes are even bigger than ever then, plus there's an even bigger wealth of maps (http://www.wmdb.org/) since the newer updates added support for color maps and maps with huge dimensions (the limit is something like 30k by 25k pixels now)

there's still plenty of love for the other schemes though and the diversity in them just keeps growing as well, there's something like 35 or 40 different "known" game types out there now and that's just looking at the old wormolympics 2006 events page

lately i've pretty much been playing team17 (http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/scheme-team17.php) and hysteria (http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/scheme-hysteria.php) with folks on #worms (gamesurge IRC) but after all, the more the merrier

Shit..I still have Worms for my DC and play that from time to time when I have a bunch of friends over. Now that I think about it, I still have Worms world party for PC. Anyway I can use that to get online?

technically sure you can but the world party and worms 2 scenes are long dead; armageddon and world party aren't compatible but there are rumors of the next big update (expected in around a year at least) planning to bring world party "out of the dark ages" and "merge" all their features together into one "superworms" sort of game that would supposedly make the two compatible

no worries though, armageddon is bargain bin stuff by now (ordering it costs like $10 US) and i hear it's very easy to torrent if you're willing to go that route

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU9M58Du3WI Thought this video had insane rope skills.

I use to play armageddon on the PS1 until I let someone borrow it then their house got broken into. I played the xbox arcade version of worms but it is not the same and the rope has entirely different properties and doesnt let you bounce over objects.

So there isn't an updated version of this game yet? No next gen release?

there's still new worms games coming out if that's what you're asking; there's some ds worms games out now, there's worms on xbox live arcade, and "worms: a space oddysey" just came out for wii if i recall

if you mean patches when you say "updated version" though then you're in luck; the latest update patch came out june 2007 plus the patch developers are still actively working on it and keep in touch with the players (no middlemen or PR like with hd remix or whatever)

and yes it works on XP now if anyone's wondering; vista support is still kinda flaky though, take a look at team17 forums if you need help with that

time to give this thread a good ol' kick in the pants

worm olympics (http://wormolympics.com/) started just a few days ago, a big collection of international online tourneys all running at various times from june 28 to august 31; joining some tourneys (you don't have to join all of them) or hosting your own, it's time to get hype folks

maybe we could even have a SRK event?!
