So, in terms of forum rules, we're just going to roll with SRK GD and Xbox Live forum standards. Don't spam, and don't troll, and everything should be peachy.
What I would like to do, however, is to make this thread a FAQ for new PS3/PSP owners. I'm going to start by copying over the first three posts from the PS3 thread in GD, and then I'm going to close this thread. If you want to add any information, feel free to just let me know, and I'll add it in.

*** Total hardware PS3s with SACD support have gone the way of the dodo. The 40GB is now the defacto standard PS3, but SCE as a whole will still release different SKUs depending on what the market demands, basically SCE is using Apple's Ipod model here. Like for example, while the 80GB SKU has been phased out in both NTSC markets, SCEA is still releasing a special 80GB SKU bundle this June in North America containing Metal Gear Solid 4 and a Dual Shock 3. ***
Differences in SKUs:
*** ALL PS3 GAMES ARE REGION FREE, YES EVEN PAL TITLES, NTSC PEOPLE
WILL ONLY RUN INTO PROBLEMS IF PAL TITLES ARE PLAYED ON NTSC SDTVs AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE SAME VICE VERSA, BUT HDTVs AND MONITORS HAVE NO PROBLEMS ***
*** YES EVEN PSN IS REGION FREE, JUST AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE MEANS TO BUY STUFF OFF FOREIGN PS STORES ***
*** They all have complete PS1 software backwards compatibility, the same as the later fat PS2s, PStwo Slims and the PSP ***
*** PS1/2 discs are region locked, but PS1 games bought and downloaded off PSN do not have region lock, when the time comes and SCE puts up PS2 games on PSN, it will be more of the same, more on that later ***
Region Charts
- NA NTSC PS3: U/C PS1/PS2, R1 DVD, RA BD, PS3 ALL
- JP NTSC PS3: J PS1/PS2, NTSC R2 DVD, RA BD, PS3 ALL
- Asia NTSC PS3: J PS1/PS2, R3 DVD, RA BD, PS3 ALL
- PAL PS3: PAL PS1/PS2, R2 DVD, RB BD, PS3 ALL
Blu-Ray Region Charts:
- Region A: North America, South America, East Asia
- Region B: Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia
- Region C: China, India, Russia
*** Most BD releases are either all region or have no region lock, region coding is not enforced usually, though there are some exceptions when they are enforced due to distribution rights ***
NA, JP, Asia NTSC 20GB PS3s:
- Discontinued
- Hardware PS2 backwards compatibility ~98% compatibility, similar to PStwo Slimline

- No Card Readers for SD Flash, Memory Stick, etc.
- No Chrome Trim
NA, JP, Asia NTSC 60GB PS3s:
- Discontinued
- Hardware PS2 backwards compatibility ~98% compatibility, similar to PStwo Slimline
- Wifi
- Card Readers for SD Flash, Memory Stick, etc.
- Chrome Trim
EU, AU PAL 60GB PS3:
- Discontinued
- Emotion Engine-emulated software + Graphics Synthesizer hardware backwards compatibility now up to ~90%
- Wifi
- Card Readers for SD Flash, Memory Stick, etc.
- Chrome Trim
- In the EU, the Starter Pack includes Resistance, Motorstorm and an extra Sixaxis
NA, Asia NTSC 80GB PS3:
- Discontinued in North America, get 'em while they're hot!
- Emotion Engine-emulated software + Graphics Synthesizer hardware backwards compatibility now up to ~90%
- Wifi
- Card Readers for SD Flash, Memory Stick, etc.
- Chrome Trim
- Identical to the PAL 60GB models
All Regions 40GB PS3:
- NO PS2 backwards compatibility
- NO SACD support
- Wifi
- No Card Readers for SD Flash, Memory Stick, etc.
- 2 less USB ports
- This model has improved Wifi and Bluetooth compatibility
- Satin Silver Matte Trim
- Asia as a whole will also have a Ceramic White version released as well
- This 40GB still comes with the Sixaxis, so no, there will be no dreams of an early DS3 pack-in
- Consumes less voltage than older models, most likely due to removal of parts and smaller chipset
- During the sale in late '07 the first 200K customers for the 40GB JP PS3 (includes 20GB and 60GB SKUs also) will receive Spider-Man 3 BD free, just like how PAL regions got Casino Royale BD free earlier in '07
- In Europe, the 40GB will also come in bundles with either PES2008 or FIFA08 in late '07
- It has been confirmed for North America and will be bundled with Spider-Man 3 BD
- Satin Silver 40GB does not come with a DS3, only a racecar um I mean sixaxis
- MGS4 Steel 40GB does in fact come with a DS3.
- MGS4 Gunmetal Gray 40GB PS3 are only available via Konami.com for North America. (http://www.konami.com/Konami/ctl3810/cp20111/si3327390/cl1/metal_gear_solid_4_limited_edition_playstation3_bu ndle) The Japanese MGS4 Hagane 40GB can be bought on either Konamistyle Japan or from various import shops such as Play-Asia.
*** On PS2 backwards compatibility, it should be noted that SCE has always wanted a software solution from the start, but as everybody should remember, the PS3 was pretty much rushed for 2006, hence the customized PStwo innards on the PS3 motherboard. You can see that they are still working towards the goal of full software emulation already with the PAL 60GB and the NTSC 80GB models which emulates the PS2's CPU (EE) to do 50% emulation via software and has still in stock the PS2's GPU (GS) to do the other 50% of emulation via hardware.
The removal of PS2 BC with the 40GB SKU was obviously done as a cost cutting measure, since the main issue (besides current software selection, but that's subjective really) with consumers is price. Given Sorny's PS3 situation, they had to do something fast with the price. This does suck for most people, but for the people who don't care for backwards compatibilty and want a cheap PS3 or Blu-ray player or both, this is the model for them. It was easier for SCE to take this route this time around unlike the early PS2 era since the PS2 is still dominating and is really cheap (and will probably get cheaper this holiday season) and also the fact that there are still PS2 BC capable PS3 models out on the market for those who want PS2 BC.
SCE has already said many times that they eventually want to get PS2 games up on PSN. Before you say, oh noes no one wants to download DVD sized games, you should remember that there is no filesize limit on PSN content unlike Live Marketplace or Virtual Console and that's why we have games like Warhawk (~800mb) up on PSN and later on, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue which is a DVD-sized game. Also the PSN versions will probably be compressed just like the PS1 PSN versions.
But again, those are all plans down the line, so we really do not know until if it happens or not. Will there be an eventual software solution down the line though? Who knows, but I wouldn't bet against it. Remember earlier this year with the launch of the PAL PS3, SCE had said they were going to go away from backwards compatibility, but after they said that, we saw compatibility improve from 60% to 90% in the newer models, full upscaling, fast loading, and etc.... For the most part they are just keeping mum on the situation because they don't want us to come after them for saying things that they cannot deliver on.
If you still really aren't sure, just remember that this is the same SCE PR that said rumble was a "last-gen" feature, and we all know how that turned out.
Yes, yes, yes, I know they had nothing else to say besides that, due to the lawsuit with Immersion. ***
DUAL SHOCK 3 *** Is Available Now ***
- Uses next-generation iteration of Sony rumble tech, impressions can be read on various game sites covering TGS this year
- Does not use single motor Immersion Touchsense tech, since Sony doesn't want to give Immersion anymore money
- Will be released November 11, 2007 in Japan
- Will come in two colours (in Japan anyway): Black and Ceramic White
- Will be released in Western territories in Spring 2008*UPDATE Late April 2008 for NA
- As soon as this fall, there will already be new games supporting it such as Uncharted and RCF and older games will get patched
- So yes, import away
- Personal Impressions UPDATED: This is definitely NOT DS1 or DS2 tech, the feedback is a lot different, it can range from really weak to quite strong, and it is definitely smarter although it's really tricky to explain that, but anyway for example while playing High Velocity Bowling in it, depending on the pins that were hit / fell that's the part of the pad that had feedback to it. Also the buttons seem to be made with different plastic, they feel a lot better, and the controller overall feels sooo much more comfortable, I don't know what they did really. It also has that much needed added weight, battery life is good, but who cares really since you can recharge it with any USB port. lol

PlayStation Cards / Tickets
- These are like the WiiPoints or Live Marketplace Points cards
- Already released in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea for their respective stores, can be bought off Play-asia or NCSX or eBay
- Coming soon to North America and Europe, how soon? *UPDATE: Apparently already spotted in North America but in random locations, reportedly seen at military bases' stores
PlayStation Network
- Yes, it's free, and no strings attached
- No, it is not SCE's Xbox Live, it's more like SCE's Steam, and I guess also SCE's Second Life when Home comes out
- Again it's region free, you can also buy stuff from foreign PS stores providing you have a Credit Card for that region or PlayStation Tickets / Cards
- PSN download speed will vary from person to person, for some people it is quite fast, but for others it can be really slow, you should also check your router settings too, since freeing up the ports can really help
- Online play (well first party titles anyway) has no virtually no lag, how they did this in games like Resistance and Warhawk (40P and 32P respectively) is beyond me, dedicated servers ftw?
- Online play is also universal in most cases, for example I can play Everybody's Golf 5 online with Japanese players even though I am in Vancouver, others have also done it with JP Dark Resurrection
- GT5P has no lag, well the import anyway, both DS and I can confirm it. =)
PlayStation Home
- Closed beta is still going on (I'm not part of it, so don't ask me questions about it, but you can ask epp1e since he apparently got in)
- Spring 2008 is the official rollout
- If people are up for it, we can make a SRK Home Space when the time comes
- epp1e got in the Home Beta, so go harass him
PlayStation Store Updates Notices
- I will update this first post from time to time linking to a post in the thread for ease and convenience
- Only the NA, UK and JP stores will be mentioned, since I only made accounts for those
- NA and EU stores usually update on Thursdays, NA store updates typically at 3PM PST
- JP store updates whenever
- HK store is a combination of both NA and JP stores, so it has updates from both
- EU stores for the most part are the same, but will vary from region to region
- AU store apparently is barebones, all they get are random music videos
- The PSP has its own PS Store which can be accessed via the intarwebz now
- JP store has the most PS1 games up online, over 150+
- EU store comes up next, then NA store brings up the rear
- Apparently according to Jack Tretton of SCEA during E3 07, SCEA is waiting for the PS store redesign before committing to dumping more PS1 games onto the store, dunno what's stopping them when SCEI just brings them in droves *UPDATE: The redesign if it is what that is has come and gone, and the real reason why SCEA is dragging its feet on the subject is unlike SCEI or SCEE, SCEA is actually republishing all the PS1 titles and making sure they work for both PS3 and PSP, SCEI releases PS1 games that either work on both PS3/PSP, just PSP or just PS3
- Here's a guide for people who want to make a JP account but don't know Japanese http://blogs.ign.com/xheavenxsentx/2006/12/09/39684/
- In case you were wondering, I get my updates for each store from blog.us.playstation.com (NA) / jp.playstation.com/ps3/psn (JP) / threespeech.com/blog (EU), that or I just check them in person when I get home (most of the time I do my Thursday updates from work)

Here is the second.
Right, so I will go ahead and assert my "modliness," according to Superking, and decree that there shall be no trolling in this thread.
The Memory Card Adapter
As for firmware 1.80, you can write to memory cards with it, though I still just use the internal memory cards for my saves (since it's not limited to 8MB or 15 "blocks").
MGS4 and FFXIII Exclusivity (New rule as of Jan 08, 2008)
Henceforth, any conjecture about the exclusivity of MGS4 or FFXIII without a link to a credible and neutral source where an exec from either Konami or Square Enix, respectively, comments on the matter specifically, will be considered trolling. Don't do it; we are all tired of this stupid bullshit, and you WILL receive and infraction for breaking this rule.
Kotaku
Regarding the above stipulation, do not post Kotaku blogs as credible sources. They are not, and Kotaku is a joke. It is, however, absolutely fine to post Kotaku blogs regarding any other news.
Reseting Display Resolution
If you need to, for whatever reason, reset your display settings (say you go from a 1080p TV to a 720p TV and get a black screen), turn on your PS3 and hold the power button/thermal plate until your PS3 beeps twice. At that point it will reset and auto-detect your display settings.
I need a new HDTV to fully experience the awesome. What do you use, and what do you recommend?
I have a Westinghouse LVM-37w3 (http://westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=56), and I think it's a great TV at a great price. I highly recommend it, but I must warn you that it does not include an ATSC tuner for HDTV, so you will need to buy your own decoder.
Superking is using a Sharp Aquos LC-32GP1U (http://www.sharpusa.com/products/ModelLanding/0,1058,1834,00.html), and he says it's fantastic.
Other awesome HDTVs include Sharp's Aquos line, Sony's Bravia line, and Pioneer's Kuro.
That's all well and good, but I want a cheap HDTV. I'm not rich like you Rockefellers
Check out the Element FLX-1910 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/Search.do?c=1&searchType=user&keyword=ele+flx+1910&searchSection=All&go.x=0&go.y=0). I have one of these at my apartment, and it's a great bargain that works beautifully.
Do I need HDMI? What cables should I get?
In general, you will need HDMI to get the most out of your PS3, but you don't need to spend $50 at Best Buy to get cables. I recommend this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189054). I'm using it myself, and it works fine.
Here's an even cheaper one (http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Feet-Super-Resolution-Cable/dp/B0002L5R78/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1198627296&sr=8-1)! Cop that shit!
If you're thinking about getting Monster cables, scroll down further in this post to read my opinion of them.
Blu-ray movies
Oh, and to the new PS3 owners, don't skip out on Blu-ray movies. They look AMAZING, and after watching them, I can't ever go back to standard DVD (or shitty HD-DVD).
Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD
The main difference between BD and HD-DVD is the exclusive studio support each side has (HD-DVD has Universal and Paramount exclusively. BD has everyone else). In terms of the disc technologies themselves, though, BD is a higher density disc (more storage), has higher bandwidth (which allows for uncompressed audio, which HD-DVD can't do), and has a more durable disc coating. All BD players support 1080p native resolution as well, while many HD-DVD players will only support 1080i and then de-interlace the signal (it supposedly looks the same, but I haven't tested it).

PS3 games I personally recommend
-Uncharted - This game is amazing. It is like Prince of Persia (platforming) meets Metal Gear Solid (stealth gameplay) meets Resident Evil 4 (battle) meets Crash Bandicoot (chase sequences and character appeal) meets Ratchet & Clank (skill points). It is super fun, and it has amazing graphics. I would say this is a must-have for anyone with a PS3.
-Ratchet & Clank: Future Tools of Destruction - It's a beautiful platformer and third-person shooter (sort of. There are tons of weapons). There's lots to do, and it's tons of fun.
-Super Stardust HD - This is my favorite of the dual-stick shooter genre. Featuring multiple weapons, a boost system, and a spherical field, this game is like Asteroids meets Geometry Wars.
-Everyday Shooter - This is another dual-stick shooter, and it's pretty fun.
-Blast Factor - Another good dual-stick shooter, featuring some motion controls.
-Calling All Cars! - This is a fun game to play online every once in a while. It's kind of like Twisted Metal meets Micro Machines, and it plays more like a ball-game, since you have to hold onto criminals you catch. It's well worth its asking price.
-Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection - It's online T5DR. That's probably all I need to say.
Games I've played but don't really recommend
-Assassin's Creed - I have this and feel that it's more of a rental.
-Heavenly Sword - I also have this, and it's pretty fun. Looks really good, too, but it lacks replay value. It also features some atypical controls for a game of its genre.
-Ninja Gaiden Sigma - I like this game, but I hate the camera. It's fun, though.
Monster™ cables
Don't buy them. They aren't actually better than any other cables, and they cost significantly more. These cables only offer two real advantages:
1. Gold plating, which prevents corrosion/oxidation. However, you can get the same effect by unplugging and replugging your cables every few months.
2. More shielding, which doesn't actually make any difference in most environments.
Will my backwards-compatible games be unplayable with lag?
At most, you get 1-2 frames of lag, which only comes into play for things like fighters and rhythm games that require frame-perfect timing. For every other game, I highly doubt you will notice the 1/30th of a second delay.
Further, this only applies to 480i-native games that get upscaled on LCD HDTVs.
Microfiber dusting cloths
DO NOT USE MICROFIBER CLOTHS FOR DUSTING ANYTHING, EVER.
This is, like, the shadiest product (microfiber for PS3/360/electronics) I've ever seen. I guess the concept of the microfiber towel is still relatively new in the electronics world, but car guys have known forever that it simply is not made for dusting and WILL scratch your shit. The reason for this boils down to one main point: the smaller gaps in its material will not allow dust to pass through it, and using it on a dusty surface will drag the dust over your surface and grind micro-scratches into it.

PS3 IMPORTATION:
- Since PS3 is region free for PS3 games after all, you will ask, where can I import games? Well, there are many places, so here's a few that we recommend other than Ebay:
For people in North America who want to import NTSCJ games:
- Play-asia
- Yesasia
- NCSX
For people in Asia who want to import NTSCU/C games:
- Play-asia
- Yesasia
- videogamesplus.ca
- NCSX
For people in North America and Asia who want to import PAL games:
- I'll find out later
For people in Europe who want to import NTSCU/C games, because SCEE has embargoed Play-asia, and Yesasia I think:
- videogamesplus.ca
- NCSX
For people in Europe who want to import NTSCJ games, because SCEE has embargoed Play-asia, and Yesasia I think:
- NCSX
Note: If you want a PS3 that can play NTSCJ PS2 games, Play-asia still carries the 20GB and 60GB JP PS3s, albeit pricey with present pricing standards. I've directly linked to said SKUs in the first post of this thread as well for the lazy.
PS3 DURABILITY:
- How To Kill a PS3 (http://www.ps3vault.com/how-to-kill-a-ps3-console-1975)
- PS3 lifts up Steamroller (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tEryS5tzVGA)
- Yes folks, the irony is indeed true, Sony has built the most durable and sturdy console this generation
PS3 Model Recommended by SRK:
If you are in a NTSC region, obviously the 60GB model. But if you cannot find that, then the Motorstorm 80GB bundle is really nice if you can find it. Other than that, you can wait for the MGS4 bundle that hits in June, you can't go wrong with either really. Although if you are not satisfied with 90% PS2 BC and want 98% PS2 BC, and happen to come across a 20GB somehow for cheap, then go for that.
Or if you don't care for PS2 BC at all, just go buy the 40GB, hell go import the NTSCJ Ceramic White/Satin Silver/Hagane Steel 40GB. You might as well, since they're so dope. XD
For PAL folk, the only SKU available is the 40GB, but you get some really nice bundles depending where you are in Euroland, France gets that cool movie pack and Europe in general gets a GT5P bundle. Don't sleep on the new 40GB starter pack either, Uncharted AND RCF in a bundle, with an extra pad to boot, although it should be noted both of these are single player games only. These are linked in the top post.
