So I'm discovering there are some pretty damn impressive games available for nothing...this all stemmed from my asking about free RTS games in that RTS thread. Well, I found a bunch, and many from other genres as well.
Before I start rattling them off, does anybody have any recommendations? I know of many, but haven't played them all, or even most of them.

Turns out I was a lot better at Balloon Fight when I was six than I am now. I just don't see the angles anymore.

Alright, here we go.
Okay, I'll kick this ish off.
Invasion: Battle of Survival, (http://www.boswars.org/) or BOS Wars, is a real-time strategy game built on the Stratagus engine, featuring all your standard RTS-isms: build tree, vehicles, aircraft, soldiers, defensive structures, multiple resources (energy and magma), etc. Runs on Windows, OSX, Linux, and BSD. Internet and lan play included. Not a bad game, still has some growing to do...a few units behave erratically.

Home of the Underdogs, it's a great place for really old PC games that are abandonware. Some REALLY good games there. My personal favorite 2 are Syndicate Wars and 4D Boxing. Unfortunately, I can't get DOSBox to run. (http://www.the-underdogs.info/)

These are good links, but a bit overzealous...I'm trying to weed it down a bit. I mean, for God's sake, they have Nanaca Crash on there.

Yeah, I'll usually stop by Home of the Underdogs every once in a while to look through the archives and find something interesting to play. It's a great site.
Also: If DOSBox doesn't run, maybe you could use something like VDMSound to run older games.

Mythos, the best free MMORPG in existance. It's in closed beta atm, I'll see if I or anyone I know have invites 4 u. It's from the original makers of Diablo, and it is Diablo 3 basically, only MMORPG.
And man, you can be a troll w/ a cigar. And dual pistols. With machine gun turrets.
Not even shitting you.

Yeah, it's really good. The latest test patch adds Crafting and removes the instancing to be a fully open world like Diablo. I checked and apparently they've disabled invites, so sorry. :( When Open Beta comes out soon, make sure to get on it.

I forgot about Battleships Forever...silly name, but loks fun.
Descent: Freespace 2 is available for free now, and there's a port of the first game and Silent Threat expansion to the Freespace 2 engine (which was way ahead of its time). Y'all should go get that.
Just played TORCS. Very Gran Turismo-y, just highly simplified.

I just played this game, and it is REALLY fun and addictive.
You should also check out http://www.wyrdysm.com/games.php, this guy has made a few games, the most impressive of which is Battleships Forever, a 2d space strategy game with alot of customization. It has interesting effects and lots of graphical quirks that make the game fairly addicting. Edit: Gah, this was already posted.
http://mirrormoon.org/projects/windom, Bootfighter Windom is a fanmade version of the Gundam fighting games that have only been released in Japan. It's fairly fun. It plays like A.C.E.

The only negative thing I have to say about FS2 is that I don't like wading through the training, but I understand it's a necessary evil. To me, it's the ultimate space sim (barring E.L.I.T.E), it runs beautifully on my 64MB graphics card, and best of all it's free if you're curious (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/).
