LANSING, Mich. (June 19) - The winner of last week's $57 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot is a registered sex offender who also pleaded guilty to two breaking and entering charges in the 1980s.

Fred Topous Jr., 45, was discharged from Michigan Department of Corrections supervision in October 2006.

The Kent City man traveled to Lansing on Tuesday to claim the prize from Friday's drawing in the multistate game. Topous chose to take the prize as a $34 million lump sum payment, before taxes.

Topous said he planned to buy a house, send his children to college and have some fun with his winnings. He said he and his wife work multiple jobs to make ends meet and thought they'd have to work till they died.

"I want to enjoy a little bit of life," Topous told state lottery officials. "We're plain folks. We've struggled all our lives."

According to the Corrections Department's offender profile, Topous pleaded guilty to breaking and entering charges in 1984 and 1988 and to assault with intent to commit sexual penetration in 1999. In the latter case, Topous was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl, USA Today reported.

All three offenses occurred in Grand Traverse County. Prosecutor Alan Schneider said Wednesday that he wasn't familiar with the cases.

The Michigan Lottery told Grand Rapids television station WOOD that anyone can play the lottery except those under 18 and those who work for the agency.

"He's had some tough breaks," friend and co-worker Jan Westcott told The Grand Rapids Press. "I know some of his secrets, and he knows some of mine. I'm not going any further."

A telephone message was left with Topous on Wednesday night.

If I were a totalitarian dictator, I would let him have the money but then I would seize it to build a giant Brazilian torture machine and I don't mean Brazil like in the country full of hot chicks, undiscovered tribes, colorful ghettos, and kidney theft, I mean Brazil as in the movie Brazil (Terry Gilliam's director's cut that was released by the Criterion Collection only though). Like I would have a $34 million dollar torture machine the size of a large grain silo containing a dentist's chair that would sit upon a raised platform. It would then have robotic arms with electrodes that would jab you in not so nice places (eyes, tongue, crotch). The needles would be hooked up to giant Tesla coils for maximum electrical and visual effect. It would also have lots of superfluous walkways just to seem imposing. The chair would also be outfitted with A Clockwork Orange-style machine to constantly keep your eyes open so the torturer may brainwash you with a digital projector. Then afterwords, another robotic machine would hang, draw, and quarter you but before cutting off your head, it would hook you up to an external artificial heart. Then a Mola Ram lookalike (maybe Westworld-like robot or something) would come in and pull your heart out and light it on fire. Finally, the Mola Ram lookalike Robot thing would laugh maniacally and pull a lever which causes the chair to tilt and drop him down a trapdoor, Sweeney Todd style, to the floor so that he could be eaten by wild boars. He would still be hooked up to the external heart and other medical machines to keep him alive though. Then, after the wild boars have had their fill, the condemned man's head would be cut off and automatically put on a pike which would then be stuck in the ground along the walls of the Brazilian torture machine building to scare future pedophiles. Then robots would clean it kind of like those automatically cleaning public toilets in Europe. This is the only way that I would let that dude win the lottery. He would get to look at the money for a short while but then would have to spend it building a giant Brazilian Torture Machine Building to execute him and other people guilty of heinous crimes.

Well lotto winners are usually paid in intervals, and even if he request the money in a lump sum he'd get a huge chunk taken from him after taxes and other fees. So chances are he couldn't use all the 57 million at once even if he wanted to.


I just got to thinking... wouldn't it be justified if he had to play his victims a sizable portion of his winnings for the mental anguish he caused? I'm sure it's not legally possible unfortunately.
